I have been playing mercenaries since mk2 and after playing a few games of mk3 with them I've been considering picking up cygnar as my new primary faction instead. Back in mk2 I used to always play using theme forces and since there is only one currently, I started looking at other casters that I had previously ignored. After reviewing all of them, I discovered that I don't really like the majority of the mercenary casters. Unlike cygnar casters, which I have the exact opposite opinion of. Plus Cygnar has access to more mercenary models than any other faction in warmachine (besides mercenaries themselves), so I could still use the majority of the models I already have. I just don't know how practical doing this would be or if its even on par with normal cygnar lists, since I've never actually played them.

There are actually two Theme Forces now. One Cephalyx and one from New Quarter called "The Kingmaker's Army". In terms of makeup, it is similar to Magnus' old Bad Seeds (if I remember right), just having some different rules and Warcasters to support them.

I won't comment on practicality, as I haven't kept up with the Cygnar side of things, and I don't have a good store to game at near by any more.

Never really considered cephalyx to be part of the mercenaries faction because of all the restrictions they have, so really there is only one.

Also I have heard that mercenaries were more prevalent in cygnar back in mk2 but I don't know about now.

They are completely Mercenaries now, just as the Morrowan knights, Idrians, and Kayazy are. They just happen to be a bit more restricted than other Mercenaries are, much like the old school Contracts were.

I can't say for sure, since I don't build my Mercenaries from a Highbourn/Cygnar perspective, but I know that Magnus the Warlord actually will work for Cygnar now (but isn't a Partisan, bummer), so I think that there are more options then there used to be.

I don't know how effective they are now in enhancing the Cygnar toolbox as they did in Mark 2, though. As I said, I am not as familiar with the Cygnar perspective and their toolset, so hopefully someone who is will chime in to help you out.

A lot of abilities went to "friendly faction" now, so it's harder to buff/debuff.

Example: Arcane Shield went from "Friendly" to "Friendly Faction" so you can't give the Forgeguard Arcane Shield now, unless you attach Murdoch to them (and increase their point cost even further).

Add in the buff to Storm Lances and Jacks, and players are finding less reason to take Mercnar. Not to say that Mercs don't get taken, the solos still see play, and some units do depending on the caster.

I got a chance to read though the entire cygnar deck today and I noticed that a lot.

It's starting to look like I'm not going to be able to combine the two factions very well.

You probably want debuff-oriented casters, like Haley 1. Siege is also fairly merc-friendly.

Decided to just go for it and see what happens, starting with Siege. I've already picked up a few things but wasn't sure about warjacks.

Any recommendations on what warjacks would be good in Siege's battlegroup?

Defenders mainly, I've seen arguements on Chargers vs Hunters to round it out (mostly because Armor Piercing doesn't stack with his feat), but Hunters are just so good otherwise.

2 Defenders, 2 Lights is my go to.

Some people like Stormwall with him instead, but I prefer to put that with a caster who can directly buff it more.
