Hi all !!!

I enthusiastically returned to 40k almost one full year ago. I am not the best painter but I've been having a blast transforming my plastic into painted models I am proud of. I really take my time and make sure to correct all mistakes and try my best on every model. I'm a bit of a slow painter but I am learning how to be better and faster.

I am sure this post has never been made before, but here goes...

I have some Khorne Berserkers I just finished and I am unsure how safely they will travel in the case I have. It is a GW case from maybe 15 years or so ago, with the individual unit slots.

I am sure they are not the most fragile unit out there, but I played a few games with these guys unpainted but glued and every trip I would lose an arm or an extra sword (I went with the extra swords in the box, they need as many weapons as they can carry, of course) Pic of case type shown, with some of my old guys. I'll probably strip them down eventually and repaint them. I need to get some war machines painted first!

Option One I am considering is trimming away the foam and custom cutting extra space for them. I thought about labeling each mini under its base and labeling the slots for them as well, as each one has a different pose.

Here is an example pic of one of them from the front and side. His arms are at fairly wide angles and he has the extra sword.

And another pic that shows them resting. They do not lay 'backpack flat,' the sword pokes the ground a little bit.

I also have some Wrathmongers that were super fun to paint that I am very happy with that I use as Possessed. I do like the possessed model but I like these ones even more. Right now these guys travel in a shoe box with foam in it but I would like something a bit safer and something combined if possible. Their weapons are definitely a danger area.

Do experienced players think I should cut away the foam (someone who knows their stuff at a GW store told me he liked the cases I have) or should I go for Option Two and be looking into one of GWs channel foam cases.

I also considered picking up a Pelican case with the pluckable foam since in the years to come I plan on having quite a sizable force. But, I am not sure how well my minis would fit in those square shapes, compared to my current case or a GW channel foam case. I know about BattleFoam, KR Multicase, and others from reading posts on this forum from web searching but they sort of have the same dilemma as now - trying to fit these guys (and future models like bikes, rhinos, helbrutes, maulerfiends, soul grinder, bloodthirster? etc) into the rectangle shaped boxes.

I get a lot of mileage out of the Silly Winks foam from hobby lobby. It's $1.29 for a sheet of the thick stuff and it takes 1-3 sheets to make a tray. It's a much firmer foam so it's easy to cut and glue with super glue, but not abrasive enough to rub off paint.

With a razor blade/exacto knife and some measurements it's really easy to build trays with oversized or odd shaped cutouts specific for ungainly models. The most important thing is to pick a size to use with a case that you like and stick with it. Academy, lowes, and Home Depot have a good selection of hard plastic storage

For what it's worth I've spent maybe $200 on boxes and foam sheets to make trays for 10,000 points worth of orks.

Thanks for the info! I'll definitely look into making my own as an option. Looks good - do you find you can make it fit the minis tight enough to offer them good protection?

I use foam ordered online from a place called the Foam Factory. They have that pluck and peel stuff so it's easy to make your own little compartments. Plus they sell other varieties like normal foam and eggshell foam.

For cases, I just buy some random file cases from Office Depot. They stack on top of each other, which is great when you combine it with this little product called "strap a handle" which lets you carry two cases in one hand. I don't know how many cases you'll need, but for a horde army it's pretty much essential.

The above tips are good.

When I was super young and didn't have much painted (still don't AND it is a new collection for the most part), I just used paper bags and doubled them up.

The GW channel foam case is kind of expensive but it really is good at keeping awkwardly-posed models safe. I use it for my Eldar who have all sorts of spindly arms and antennae, and it works like a charm. You just need to make sure you pack enough models into the foam to make everything tight and prevent things from shifting around. I give my Eldar plenty of space in the foam and the largest case is more than large enough to hold 100+ regular infanty, 30+ Wraithguard, and some Wraithlords and support weapons.

The channel foam is less good at holding large models like vehicles, but I find a cheap pistol case does a good job for that.

I gave up on foam or partitioned boxes for storage and just put magnets on the bottom of the bases. Then I take a box/container and glue a galvanized sheet of cut to size roll flashing onto the bottom. Your minis will be perfectly safe apart from a drop from height. Super fast packing and unpacking for games, no need to worry about posing or anything.

For behicles you can either do the same or put them in a box with no slip rubber matting like the kind used under sinks or in workshops. Again, works great and really easy to pack and unpack.

Also much cheaper than expensive cases and foam.

I’ve not had models break in transit since I started using KR cases. They have infantry slots in a few sizes, to accommodate wildly singing guys. Not sure about the flails though, but something should work. Pluck at last resort.

As far as pricing goes, it’s more then do-it-yourself, but less then other options.

So as much as i dont like to shill for GW, Their cases are pretty bomb and hold a whole lot.

Another awesome alternative is to get a large flag bin, there are storage ones that will work. Hot glue thin metal plates to the bottom of it. then glue magnets to the bottom of your models, and stick it to the metal. Works great.

To many unpainted models to count.

I really am liking the idea of building my own case with foam, but I am very interested in magnetized cases as well. Thinking I could even combine the two for fragile models (magnetized with foam wall insert)

For magnetized transport, how do I make sure my magnets are attached to the base strongly enough that a bump or shake won't rip my mini from the magnet? I've magnetized a few weapon arms but I read that if I tug and not slide the arms off, I may pull the magnet out. Wouldn't want to drive my case with anxiety that every bump may send a model bouncing to oblivion

What magnets/size of magnets do you use for your minis?
I do something similar but with metal washers on the bases and magnetic sheeting in the boxes. I'm considering change it around though to get better protection for the models.

Hot glue some 1/8 inch by 1/16 magnet to the bottom of the base.

its really easy to do if you put the magnet down on a tin sheet with tape or a release agent on it first, then you gob a bit of hot glue on to it then while hot press your base onto that till it cools.

you can knock out a bunch with that.

the magnest you want depend on the model infantry can use
