Fortress world of Ostrakan

Hello, I would like to you to share your wargaming stories of brave or lucky Guardsmen, achieving great things against all odds .

Please, limit to to the Guardsmen (and Guard in general) only, as prominent actors.
And please, keep it serious.

I'll start with mine...

1) Kill Team (HoR) - Single Heavy Weapons team killed a Space Marine Captain in Artificer armour (who before massacred another HWT and a squad of guardsmen) by a Krak Rocket in overwatch. The Captain survived horrible punishment, being it plasmagun, hot-shots and autocannon and has been killed by a last avalible unit.

2) Kill Team (HoR) - Last surviving guardsman of his squad with Plasmagun killed three Chaos Terminators and a Chaos Lord all by himself and survived.

3) Kill Team (HoR) - Squad of Guardsmen killed over half of the enemy team (Space Wolves) in overwatches.

4) Regular 40k - I've won a 1200pts point skirmish with only 4 casualties (all being Guardsmen) against Chaos Space Marines. I fielded about 35 Guardsmen, mostly veterans.
Those 4 poor sods have been killed by Havoc Launcher. Opponent's Ahriman periled himself to death, Obliterators have been obliterated by Executioner, same thing with Hellbrute, Cultists burnt and blasted apart by Autocannons, Veterans and Chimeras and his CHSM Brrrrrrrrrrrrrt-ed by Avenger Strike Fighter.

Krieg! What a hole...

The two Grenadiers blowing up a Stompa with only 2 meltagun shots takes the cake for me, gave the order to reroll hits vs vehicles, managed to hit with both, rolled 4 and 5 for damage that became 6's due to AP 1 and rolled two 6's for further damage, they did not survive the explosion, but I made my entire army cost back in points, so win some lose some.

As for regular guardsman, its gotta be the PCS melta gunner melting away the Doom of Malan'tai with 10 wounds on a snapshot. They had broken and fell back to about half an inch of the end of the board, and I passed the following ld test, and got lucky.

Can't speak to regular Guardsmen, but I did have a suicide Stormtrooper squad drop a Chaos Land Raider on arrival, spend three turns refusing to die and making a general nuisance of themselves, and when down to just two models charge and wipe a Havoc squad.

There's also the time a Heldrake happened to land next to a bastion I had a Stormtrooper squad occupying, they were perfectly situated to send a krak grenade (from a grenade launcher, not thrown) up its tailpipe and force it to make a grounding test and crash. I wish I'd thought to take a picture of it, the Heldrake's exhaust was level with the battlements and around two inches away. Perfect model positioning for what happened next.

A Place

Just last game I had a guardsmen squad with an auto cannon and flamer blocking a charge some thunder hammer/storm shield terminators were trying to get on my command tank. The rest of his army was stuck in reserves so he charged my guard squad to try and keep his termies alive. After completing the charge he issues a challenge to my sarge so accept since he is probably dead anyway. Well he's got a thunder hammer so I go first, roll my guardsmen attacks gets nothing then on to the challenge, roll the sarge's three attacks, two hits one wound. Then my opponent rolls a one on his armour save. His termie sarge dies to a guardsmen's chain sword. He then kills the whole squad except the sarge who then runs off the board to go get his medal (and probably a bolt round from a commissar).

This didn't happen to me but a friend of mine was running a unit of Militus Tempestus against 3 Imperial Knights and an MT unit charged one IK and melta-bombed it to death which then caused its catastrophic explosion to scatter back directly on the the IK behind it and killed that one with a 6 on the StrD hit.

It was amazing to see effectively a unit of guardsman knock over two Imperial Knights like dominos

I had a friend's weapon team defeat a charging Space Marine Bike Sergeant after 4 rounds of combat! That was a 500 point game though.

5th ed. I was trying out CSM vs IG. Full Khorne list. Kharn and his buddies charge into combat with 10 Guardsmen. 1 Guardsman walked away. He did not fall back. He killed Kharn. By himself. In melee. No upgrades.

Had a Chapter Master with dual Thunder Hammers plough through my Guardsmen after arriving by Drop Pod. He comes within range of my Primaris Psyker and Plasma CCS, who casts Enfeeble on him...

Opponent: "Come on, -1 toughness isn't going to do much!"
Me: "What's his toughness now?"
Op: "3. Why?"
Me: "What strength is Plasma?"
Op: "7, still don't understand why that's...oh..."

Yeah, single failed save and he was ID'd...

Played a game vs orks, he had a squad of boyz with a PK nob up front charging into the last 3 guys in one of my vet squads, one of which happened to have a missile launcher. Roll over watch, not expecting much, and the krak missile hits and instant kills his nob. The rest of the orks charge into combat and my vets win combat and cut them down in a sweeping advance without losing a single man. Medals all round

“Because we couldn’t be trusted. The Emperor needed a weapon that would never obey its own desires before those of the Imperium. He needed a weapon that would never bite the hand that feeds. The World Eaters were not that weapon. We’ve all drawn blades purely for the sake of shedding blood, and we’ve all felt the exultation of winning a war that never even needed to happen. We are not the tame, reliable pets that the Emperor wanted. The Wolves obey, when we would not. The Wolves can be trusted, when we never could. They have a discipline we lack, because their passions are not aflame with the Butcher’s Nails buzzing in the back of their skulls.
The Wolves will always come to heel when called. In that regard, it is a mystery why they name themselves wolves. They are tame, collared by the Emperor, obeying his every whim. But a wolf doesn’t behave that way. Only a dog does.
That is why we are the Eaters of Worlds, and the War Hounds no longer."

Not guard but with a Fire Warrior its the Tau equivalent
5 Fire Warriors with EMP grenades charge an Imperial Knight with 2 HP left and deal 1 glance to it. The IK kills 2 FWs with the D weapon and 2 more with stomps. Lone FW passes his 4+ leadership with a 3 and stays locked in. The IK swings 4 times and hits once with the D weapon and then proceeds to roll a 1 on the D table. The FW uses his EMP grenade, rolls a hit, rolls a pen, and boom goes the IK. The nuclear blast it made scatters behind a wall but still hits the FW who makes the cover save against the explosion. The lone FW then survives being shot at by 3 scions with hotshot lasguns but makes his cover saves and the game ends. The FW was one of like 3 or 4 models still alive (an immobilized piranha, a lone crisis suit, and 2 drones or something).

I have a couple...

I have a Sgt with a broken arm in a sling and bolt pistol who miraculously survived something like 10 games in a row. We named him Sgt Bad@ss and now he is officially the first man to die in all games with our game group to stop his legacy.

10 overwatching guardsman kill 2 nurgle bikers with lasguns, stopping their charge, next turn they kill the other 2 with lasguns.

30 conscripts and a commissar kill a Talos in close combat using only the Commissars krak grenade over several turns.

50 man conscript squad using a psyocculum and FRFSRF obliterate a squad of thunderwolves with their runepriest on board in a single round of shooting (make 45 3+ saves!)

5 man squad of the Hellrain Brigade suicide charge necron wraiths so that they can die and come back. Stay in combat with the wraiths for 2 full turns and kill one in close combat.

Punisher Pask once cut a land raider, several dreadnaughts, and a Dreadkinght down in a game with his rampage finally being stopped by a lucky roll of 6s on a Psycannon shot from a strike squad. In another game he blew open a land raider, shrugged off its Grav centurions passengers return firepower then laid them low before being punched to death by terminators.

Snap Firing Heavy Bolters: I dont know why but the dozens of HB in each of my lists are only capable of killing units on snapshots, never when they are standing still or in an optimum place to fire. Mostly from chimeras, the kill count includes, Space Marine Librarians, Chapter Masters, Nurgle Daemon Prince, Dreadknights, Talos, Draigo, Raiders, and D-Thirsters

My best is either a platoon commander taking the final wound off an ion-shielded stim-Riptide with a laspistol before it could flank my immobilised Leman Russes and Aegis line, or an Evacuation Scenario I played.

We were allowed 200 points of the force that needed evacuating - we fluffed it as some troops with vital intel. I chose some Guard Veterans I'd created especially for the game, and they hunkered down on a Skyshield.
Whilst the rest of the Cadian army fought through the city and the Tau to rescue the plucky Veterans (this was on one of the city ruin tables at Warhammer World, very good table), I had a Valkyrie swoop round, and get the Vets inside.
Unluckily for me, a fusion blaster stealth suit Shas'vre manages to snapshot the Valkyrie as it tries to evac the guardsmen, and sends it crashing down. I got very lucky, as most of the guardsmen actually survived the crash, and proceeded to shelter behind the burned out wreck of the Valkyrie and fight off the Tau that were pulling around.

Emperor knows how they survived the breakout, but they made it back to the rest of the Cadian army. Best unit of Cadians in the regiment right there.

Hooo boy ok here we go

1. Very start of 6th, back when Grey Knights were considered the most horrifically overpowered army around. We're playing with mysterious terrain, and I have my guardsmen holding the line on the edge of a river. I have not moved into considering most of the mysterious options kill you. Grey knight player has a bunch of terminators declare a charge across the river and enters it. He rolls the result of rerolling armor saves... and proceeds to lose two of the terminators on overwatch to lasguns

2. Commissar and about 12 surviving members of a 30 man platoon get hit by something like 11 wounds in the open. Commissar is up front. Commissar proceeds to survive 11 wounds by passing six 6+ gone to ground saves and 5 look out sirs. Then dies charging a hive tyrant.

3. The amount of times a running/gone to ground autocannon has hit both shots on snap fire is getting a bit ridiculous at this point, especially in kill team.

4. I've watched my conscripts kill all sorts of things that they REALLY shouldn't be. I'm also convinced that the conscripts are secretly vets, as every time they shoot at least half the shots, if not more hit. I've seen them take 2 wounds off a daemon prince in a single volley or wipe out an entire squad of daemons/space marines/etc.

I was playing Abbadon the armless against my buddies Imperial guard with Deathwing allies.

Running Abby with termisorc and mutilator bodyguard with their land raider (Expensive yes, caring no) which gets promptly destroyed by lucky melta shot and then charged by deathwing knights with Absolution mace chappy.

Abby loses his bodyguard but kills the entire squad after the second round only to charge into a Company Command Squad (which must have been blessed by the emperor himself)

As Abby proceeds to challenge (and lose) four consecutive rounds of combat against this commander, I try his lightning claw for two rounds, nothing. Talon of Horus? nope rolls a one. then fail an armor save from his chainsword.

Finally after four rounds I slaughter the squad, only to turn into a demon prince and then get shot to death by the same tac squad that broke my land raider.

It was a good day.

Does tanks of AM count? Howabout blowing up your own damn baneblade with your executioner tank and thus turning victory into draw when you were aiming for big win rather than moderate win?

Not awesome but hilarious for sure Learn to shoot you god damn executioner!

Bit more heroic is Yarrick leading bunch of guardsmen in an ferocious assault against tyranids! Took a while but they actually did scythe through couple hormagaunt squads(note the plural) before transcendal c-tan came in and flamed them away. Guns? We trust in bayonets!

whiffed every single shot, with rerolls during a very opportune moment.

Multiple Platoons, Medusas, A few Russes. Heavy Weapons Teams.

My Enemy was moving in the open, to secure some cover. I should have lit up 3 opposing units of Marines and their boxes.

Me and my opponent joked that even the commissars missed from point blank range.

Best from my own Guard was a single Plasma Veteran racking up around 150 points in Space Wolf kills over the course of a game, the guy just couldn't seem to miss while the rest of his squad alternated between whiffing their shots and getting slaughtered in return.

Against me, the best has to be the jammiest Melta shot ever. I send a Space Marine Captain with the Teeth of Terra, Primarch's Wrath (Salvo 5 Bolter) and Armours Indomitus relics against 7 Guardsmen from an Infantry squad. His bolter hits 5, drops 5. The guard roll morale, and pass on a double 1, so I charge to finish the job. Earlier that turn I'd popped the 2++ from the Armour Indomitus, so I was rather confident... Overwatch is rolled. The Meltagunner, one of 2 surviving models, rolls 6 to hit. Rolls 6 to wound. I have the 2++ active so it's 'anything but a 1' time...

You can guess the rest! 5 points of Guardsman and 10 points of Meltagun takes out 200+ points of Space Marine Captain.

We shall not speak of the time Belial lost consecutive rounds of combat with a Company Commander's Power Fist...

My brave guys brought a flying Virago (is it so in English?) while they were three shooting and wounding on 6 plus.

They also survived once the amazing amount of 60 shots from ork heavy weaponry (those F7 AP4)

They destroyed a dark Eldar Raider with an AT grenade so that the whole squad Inside died.

Finally, they killed a chaos terminator squad fighting with only 2 more models than their opponent.

God, I love these threads.
The stories I have shared at least once before:

- 6 veterans survive a round of combat with a Necron Overlord after charging. Sarge is dead, 2/3 meltas are gone. With 6 dice, I roll 2-3 hits and 2 6s to wound. This Overlord has the 2+ armor relic, so of course I would be thrilled to get even one wound on him... Snake eyes. Oh wait, reanimation, right? Nope. Dead Overlord.

- The very same 6 veterans, who killed the Overlord on the Necrons' turn, have the single remaining melta gunner snapshot at a Night Scythe flying overhead. There's no reason for my opponent to jink, it couldn't possibly-- It hit. It got a 6 for penetration, and a roll of 5 plus AP 1 means goodbye, Scythe.

-Planetstrike mission from way back when. Canoptek Wraith/Destroyer Lord squad pop out of a hatch in front of some of my guys, overrun a veteran squad or something. My Company Commander does not surviving members of his squad to back him up. He fires a laspistol shot at the nearest Wraith, which was down to one wound. Kills it. Necrons either wipe another squad or fail to charge the commander during their following turn. My turn again. Another quick shot at the nearest Wraith, which was also wounded. Kills that one, too.

My latest story, which occurred during a game just 2 days ago:

- A 30 man platoon with a Commissar and the PCS have Death Company units with chaplain and bikers bearing down on them. Overwatch kills 1 of 5, which is pretty good given 3+ armor and FnP. Over the course of 4 or 5 rounds of combat, the platoon slowly gets whittled down, and an additional 3 Death Company and 2 bikers charge into the combat. During one round, the PCS and bikers focus exclusively on one another. The PCS saves both wounds inflicted by the bikers then kills one in retaliation.

- By the end of this messy fight, the opponent is down to a wounded chaplain, 2 Death Company, and 1 bike, and I am down to a single guardsman and the commissar. I roll double 1 for morale check. The fluffiness of that moment had me laughing hard.

I once had a lone Sgt. Take on a squad of 7 space marines in close combat and win. One of the best sets of rolling I've ever done up until...

Not too long ago I had a guard vs guard battle. It was great especially when my CCS stood out in the open and tanked an insane amount of fire hiding behind his 5+ invul. My opponent threw tactics to the wind just too see how much he could take. ‎

I have a few.

Company Commander, powerfist to demon prince FACE. Killed it. It was a while ago, but I think it was a demon prince that was recently transformed by a challenge that he won from an ally of mine. Still, powerfist to FACE killed it.

CCS special weapons guys, one with a plasma gun and the other with a melta gun. The Heldrake was a new thing at the time and the battle was my IG with a friend who had Gk and Tau vs CSM. Well. Said Heldrake managed to survive a full battery (3) Hydras firing at it and even a Broadside Railgun. The plasma gunner hit it with brought it down to 1 HP with the melta gunner finishing it off. They got a promotions each.

Tank based awesomeness.

CSM guy plonks down a big squad of plague marines (like 20 of them, I can't recall exactly) and tries to march them toward my tanks. My Executioner plasma tanks are there. My Tesla Tank (The Electrocutioner) unleashed its plasma sponsons and main gun, 5 plasma cannon blasts on the plague marines. Managed to kill 90% of the plague marines by itself, the rest were finished off by the second Executioner. The fact they managed to fire all their plasma weapons and not get hot AND hit was incredible.

One match, I got really lucky with a Vanquisher once and managed to one shot two land raiders over two turns, making the occupants slog through my basilisk fire.

The new orders had just come out and I was against Necrons. I surround a group of warriors with 50 guardsman, unload with FrFSrF and pump 150 lasgun shots into them. I managed to wound twice, kill one, then it got its will be back and stood right back up...

Also, in Deathwatch RPG a single 5 man squad of guard solo'd a squad of warriors hitting with less than 25% accuracy 5 times in a row. Needless to say they were all promoted.

I have to ask - how is that possible? I mean, Kharn hits and kills guardsmen on 2+s, and he even rerolls his hits in the first round of combat. That must have been some epic rolling. Was it one round of combat? He must have wiped out his own squad, to boot.

I'm sure he also go rewarded by a commissar's bolter. He must have had unholy assistance.

I mean, I once had a runtherd kill a charging berserker in CC, and roll snake eye leadership for the resulting mass grot slaughter by the rest of the berserkers, and I thought that was impressive, but a guardsman even surviving a charging kharn, much less succeeding, is quite a bit more impressive.

I was playing my IG running Emp's Wrath Artillery battery with a knight and my brother was playing CSM. The battle wasn't going well for me and the enemy got into my backfield. To make matters worse my brother was summoning demons into my back and his fire raptor gunship was wrecking everything.

My company commander proceeds to have his chimera get wrecked by the volume of fire from the storm raptor and begins his last stand wielding none other than Volkov's Cane! For the next 3 turns he proceeded to hide behind the wreck of his chimera, passing every cover and invul save thrown his way.

The Autocannon weapons team in his squad proceeds to kill a marine or demon every turn and my brother decides to finish off the squad with some flamers of tzeench.

My company commander proceeds to laugh at the flamers as he passes every single invul save thrown at him on his refractor field and when the flamers charge him, thinking they have an easy kill, he proceeds to beat them back into the warp with his Cane! Get off my lawn you mangy chaos whippersnappers!

He survived up until the last round of the game where he was charged by my brother's Aspiring champion, and even then the aspiring champion barely won. He used an ID weapon on my company commander and he finally failed his refractor field save.

The image of an old company commander beating demons and marines to death with his cane sticks in my mind forever.

Turn 1, Kharn rolled 1's on all his attacks (remember 5th ed so no Hatred for re-rolls), kills most of his Berserker buddies. The few remaining Berzerkers swing and kill a few of the IG. IG swing killing the last couple of Berzerkers. Kharn swings next turn, killing all but 1 Guardsman. After that, Kharn kept whiffing, and failing his saves.
