Flower Picking Eldar Youth

Hello everyone!

I've been a lurker for some time and have posted once before with an army list, but having seen the support in the P&M Blog section I thought it was time to take the plunge, as hopefully keeping an active track of my commitments will help me to get through some of my backlog and start working on projects that I think are awesome!

Bit of background first:
I've been interested/collecting/playing Warhammer 40,000 since the mid 90s, starting with a lowly Cadian Autocannon team and an Ork Warbike, before moving onto Valhallans for most of 2nd edition, and Dark Angels in 3rd edition. I stopped playing for a length of time here, and picked up again about 2.5 years ago, when I moved house (fresh digs = fresh army). I started collecting Craftworld Eldar, and still consider this my main army.
Throughout my time playing I've had a huge fondness for specialist games, particularly those with RPG style rules - of course, Necromunda was favoured among these, but I also really enjoyed Mordheim and Warhammer Quest.

I have a number of ongoing projects, and an even greater number of projects that are only ideas but that I want to start and hopefully finish!

My aim is to update once a week or so, depending on how much content I have, and to keep this initial post updated with what's been going on for any given project.

Edit: Project list!
Armies:
  • Imperial Fists (Skyhammer + HQ + Flyer wing) WIP
  • Eldar (was originally to be an army, now getting reduced in size...)
  • Alpha Legion (not started, to be my actual coherent army!)

  • Odds and sods:
  • Modular Gaming Board WIP
  • Assassins WIP
  • Scatter Terrain

  • Pipe Dreams:
  • 3D Warhammer Quest board, newly realised miniatures
  • Sisters of Battle...

  • Here are a few pics of work done recently that I’m quite proud of, though neither of these pieces was for me (actually for Secret Santas…):

Plague Marines – each model is converted in some minor way; some are quite quick and easy, such as horns on a helmet or an arm rotated, but positioning the marine with one foot raised was a bit of a pain! These guys were airbrushed with a couple of shades of green before adding details and edge highlights, and a lot of dirty washes/rust/Typhus Corrosion. The recipient seemed pretty happy and that’s all I could have asked for really.

Sanguinary Priest – this guy was unconverted, but I wanted to take the time to produce a paint job that I was really proud of. The whites were built up from Mechanicus Standard Grey all the way up to White Scar. The robes went from shaded Mephiston Red up ti Evil Sunz Scarlett, with some glazes in between to soften the transitions. Again, I’m pretty happy with how he turned out, apart from his melted cheese hair…

    Onwards!

    To be added soon!

My OLD Army – Craftworld Eldar

My Eldar army is around 1500 points of usable stuff, but it's almost all been collected from eBay - when I moved house I didn't have the income to lavish on all new kits (and in fact still don't thanks to starting a family), so I tended to pick up bargains where I could. What this means is that I have a bunch of different units without a real theme to the army.

    Spoiler:

    Older stuff first!

    I started with Iyanden colours:

And also managed to actually finish a squad of Fire Dragons:

Finally, made a start on some Striking Scorpions:

    And onto the now!

Recently, (for reasons that will be explained a bit later), I elected to recolour my army (at least the parts of it that would be uniformly coloured), and chose a new model (first in a long time) to start with. I took a Wraithlord, and faffed a bit to turn it into a Wraithseer:

Minor conversions here and there: I chopped one of the fingers from the ‘high-5’ hand and applied it to the closed fist hand to give the model an air of order, s/he’s in charge of the forces present style of thing. Getting the model to be stepping down was tricky and required bisecting the leg and greenstuffing part of it back together. The Wraithspear is simply the sword from the base kit with the blade cut down, and the hilt extended with the plastic tube from a cotton bud (Q-Tip).

The colours are purple and turquoise, with bone weapons and (eventually) orange gemstones.
I chose purple as the base colour early on, and then picked the others based on the positions of a colour wheel, aiming for three contrasting colours that work together.

By and large I don’t want to do anything fancy with these guys, I’m moving away from spending hours per model to getting most guys done quite quickly and spending more time on characters – that being said the Wraithseer is to be the leader of the force, and so will get a bit of extra attention lavished on him, likely in the form of some freehand decoration to the head.

I actually wrote a bit of fluff for this new craftworld:

Ilmaea is the Craftworld of the Dying Sun, and was swept up in warpstorms near the Blood Angels homeworld of Baal, in the Segmentum Ultima. The Maelstrom in this area keeps the Craftworld pulled close, necessitating Webway travel for the occupants.

Many craftworlds have a saying that describes their core ideal and combat tactic wrapped up in one; for example, Siam-Hann is the Swordwind, or ‘One Thousand Leaves Falling To Cut‘. Ilmaea, the Dying Sun, is encapsulated by the phrase ‘The Crashing Wave Parts Against The Shore‘. Ilmaea stands at constant vigil and commands a higher than average number of wraith constructs (the Shore).

Due to their reliance on the Webway and inability to travel directly to other locations, there is a limited number of Aspect shrines on the Craftworld, and the number of Aspect warriors is also limited.

Ilmaea understands the necessity for decisive action, however, and that the wraithwall cannot provide the alpha-strike capability that is sometimes required to defend the Craftworld. They encourage all citizens to learn to ride Windriders or Vypers, or to fly Crimson Hunters (the Wave).

    What’s next for Craftworld Ilmaea?

I’ve bought some Wraithguard/Wraithblades. These will be fully magnetised to allow any of the 4 weapon options to be used with a single kit (Wraithcannons, D-Scythes, Ghostswords, Ghost Axes). For now, they only have access to their standard Wraithcannon. I also found a second squad second-hand for a reasonable price, armed with D-Scythes. These will be magnetised in time as well to allow maximum customization.

I’m looking to finish painting these models, and to re-paint some existing models in the army, before committing to buying additional troops. That being said, in the future, I’d like to get a squad or two of Windriders, a squad of Vypers, and a Crimson Hunter, before finally getting a Wraithknight.

This may seem like I’m hunting down the most cheddar I can get my hands on, but honestly after running an army of eBay models for so long I could do with a few wins! That, and my local meta has delights such as War Convocations and TauTides…

    Thanks for looking!

    Those Plague Marines are great.

While winning is fun, playing is more fun and having painted armies a longer lasting reward.

    Cheers,

Thanks for this, The Plague Marines were one of the first squads that I fully painted and considered myself to be really happy with! I like the Secret Santa because it takes you out of your comfort zone so to speak, which is why I choose to paint models for people where I can!

I tend to be a lover rather than a fighter anyway, and I will always say that I prefer the modelling aspect of the hobby to the gaming - I'm actually not a great strategist at the army level. I want to get more into picking up odd miniatures form multiple ranges just because I like them, rather than focusing on building the armies that I have - I mentioned Warmachine in the title and easily 50% of why I picked up Warmachine in the first place was to paint different miniatures, rather than learning a different game.

Annnnyway, at the moment my Eldar aren't actually my main focus, so this is 'Ongoing Projects, part 2: Imperial Fists'.

Just over a year ago, I made the (foolish?) offer to my brother to paint a full Warhammer 40,000 army for him: 3rd Company, Imperial Fists.
I was hoping to get a few squads at a time, and only to have to start working on the next squad when the current one was complete. No such luck! In very short order I received the following:

  • 1 x Tactical Squad

  • 2 x Devastator Squad

  • 4 x Assault Squad

  • 1 x Chaplain with Jetpack

  • 1 x Lord Executioner

  • 2 x Legion Recon Squad (proxy for Scouts)

  • 5 x Drop Pod

  • 1 x Stormraven

  • 2 x Stormtalon Gunship

  • 2 x Land Speeder Storm

  • 3 x Legion Space Marine (30th-anniversary model)

  • Phew!
It's actually super overwhelming to get this much stuff through at once, it's easy to see why so many people end up with the grey wave on the battlefield when they commit to a new army all in one go. I'm sure there are loads of industrious people out there that are pure machines and can just work though this amount of content, but I'm one of nature's procrastinators to start with and it's hard to see where to begin with projects such as this.

You'll see that this forms the basis of a full Skyhammer with aerial support (my brother's choice), with 2 full 10-man Devastator Squads (including the models from the Tactical box) and 2 full 10-man Assault squads.
The Devastators are to be armed with Grav-Guns for one squad and Lascannons for the other. The Assaults are to armed with 2x flamers per squad.

I've spent almost all the time on this project so far in construction, and I'm at a point where I can start painting. So without any further ado, here's a bit of progress:

My painting strategy for the yellows is to airbrush them on, then shade and highlight. After that I'm working on weathering - I haven't done a lot of weathering in the past, and what I have done is a bit heady handed and time consuming (painting on rust marks individually then highlighting).
My technique on these marines is just to dab at the armour with a bit of sponge that has brown paint on it. This is the first model that I've used this technique on, and I'm really happy with how it's come out; just the right amount of wear and tear, and actually pretty minimal effort, so something I can replicate over many models.

I'll be posting a lot more of this army in the future as it's really my focus for now. If anyone wants a more in-depth look at how I paint the yellows then I can provide it.

    Thanks for looking!

Small update to the above, I'm back on the Imperial Fists bandwagon after a break...

There's everything still to do though; here's what all that stuff (apart from the 5 assault marines that are pretty much done) looks like:

I've actually basecoated some of this now as well, the 5 Legion Recon Marines, the wonderful Imperial Space Marine and bits of the Stormtalon.
I have to add shoulderpads to the Assault Marines there before they're ready to be sprayed, and most of the Devastators need to be based...
Still, a tiny bit of progress!

    Thanks for looking!
