In the middle of building a list, I just got a prompt suggesting I install updated version 2.004, and after it finished I can't even open a file, or start a new roster without a huge wall of errors.

Anyone experiencing this? Even a fresh install won't fix it.

I think data formats changed between versions.

Well that sucks... I wasn't even on an ancient version, and this was a minor, incremental update. Now I literally can't use it at all.

Battle scribe went to 2.0 which is a subscription based program and the data files updated to no longer work with what they now call "old battle scribe". To top that off the new version isn't available on as many platforms. So yeah pretty much killed it.

Seeing as how I can't get the new battle scribe 2.0 on my kindle or Windows phone I guess I'm shopping for a new roster editor. Anyone have recommendations?

It's a shame - I bought the pro edition of Battlescribe pre-2.0 and I loved it. Even got friends to start using it.

From what I understand, the guy who's doing 2.0, Jon-something, is barely involved with the original team that started Battlescribe - so that might be it.

Additionally - the Reddit/Website is basically useless for fixing any issues. On top of wanting you to pay for ad-removal and basic functions, 2.0 is still in beta. It sucks for me because I can't find anything Android-friendly for list building purposes.

Jon created Battlescribe solo and continues to be the sole developer.
(Though a bunch of other people are responsible for the actual data files due to legal issues with GW)

Source: I know Jon. And created the first every Dark Eldar battlescribe file. It was littered with errors.

Ugh no :(
I loved battlescribe, it was a great program.
The thoughts of wading through codices again......

So is it a case of paying a sub for the new version or nothing?

This is why I am so shocked GW hasn't done this or licensed this out. I would love to have an OFFICIAL program that I can use to calculate an army. I was hoping that was what was going to be in the codices but they were just a collection tracker, not an army maker.

I would love to have a one time purchase, but a monthly or yearly subscription? Better than nothing.

And considering the price of a year's use for a dual subscription to both desktop and android isn't much more than the price of 1 pot of paint. It's hardly charging the earth.
On my phone I deleted the existence of my paid for pro version and installed the new one. Refetched the data files. It all works ok so far.
My only annoyance is that Deadzone hasn't been touched since the old v1 game.

I tried dabbling with 40k9/10 again and tried AoS3 - Nice models, naff games, but I'm enjoying HH2 and loving Battletech Classic and Alpha Strike.

I've got the old version working happily on one PC, and the new version on another PC. What platform(s) are you having problems with?

Kindle fire version for me I can't write lists or view old ones and version 2 isn't available to download.

Not sure if its Battlescribe or the file depository that gakked the bed by bricking my 1.15 app. If 2.0 is going to use a new format that 1.X can't read then why didn't they make a new address for the 2.0 depository instead of using the same zogging one for the 1.X file format? Even after downloading the legacy files my 1.15 app continues to crash anytime it tries to open an existing or new army list.

Having 2.0 be a subscription model for pro when they originally did a flat cost for pro makes this whole 1.X app crashing thing seem almost intentional and designed to push people to 2.0 as they try to repair things. Perhaps I'm over reacting to all of this but this comes across as suspect and I don't feel comfortable with rewarding this sort of business practice.

The people who host the file depository are not connected to the chap who created/runs/updates Battlescribe.
I cannot see what incentive they would have for making someone try and switch over to 2.0; they get no money either way.

They don't - V1 compatible data is still on GitHub, alongside V2.

Battlescribe definitely needs updating. I can't begrudge anyone for wanting to earn a living wage making software that so many people use.

That said, I'd like to see some important changes to the software before I think about subscribing, including the ability to significantly change how output and preview output is handled.

Right now it's a little too focused on how 40k works in its output, such that there's a lot of extra formatting weirdness when using it for other popular games.

As an data author on BS I can tell you the following:

The alpha was out for months for us authors.
However, many either ignored it or chose to rewrite the data when the app came out. Otherwise you'd constantly rework the data to be useable - which, for free, was a bit much to ask.
Personally, 2.0 snuck up on me. I didn't know it was going to be released until a few days after release.
So the first week or two were a mad scramble to get things going again and not all files are up to date due to the lack of volunteers. I went from maintaining DA to maintaining DA, Skitarii, Cult Mech and Knights in an effort to keep it up.

BS 2.0 does not offer much on the surface - but significant changes under the hood which makes thing way easier for the authors. It benefits the end user as well with lower file size, faster update speed, cleaner usage and things that were downright impossible - e.g. I've begun to work Kill Team into the DA file.
However, BS 2.0 is still a somewhat buggy mess which impacts the validity of the data files.

The data structure changed entirely, so reloading old lists cannot work.

The 1.15 data is still available, as is BS 1.15 - but don't expect us to work double time to maintain that. We won't. At this point it stops becoming feasible.

2.0 uses the same branch as the old data for a simple reason - if you update you do not have to do anything (ideally). Everything will switch over.

I've heard and read numerous reports about crashes, but personally I hardly have one. And that is while working with the data files and sometimes corrupting them. IMO those come from the most part from users not updating correctly, using 1.15 with 2.0 and vice versa.

I fully understand that purchasing the pro version of 1.15 and then being expected to use a subscription (cmon, 18 cents a month?) pisses some people off, but at some point work needs to be paid, even if it's just maintenance.

The "update" is a disappointing disaster. Nothing more than a money grab on mobile. I purchased Battlescribe Pro and was very happy with it for the past 7 months or so. Today it just up and stopped working so I went looking for answers. Dude released a "new" app, with little or basically nothing in the way of new features and had the gall to not honor previous purchases and ask users to pay again for an app that is completely bugged out and invalidates all formerly composed lists. What a horrible way to do business. Will never give this scam artist my money again.

As much as it irks me to have to update and not have the legacy version available, you don't run around having two versions available. And frankly, the Pro version was cheap enough that it's not a big deal to not have it work anymore. Business models change, it's part of life if someone wants to stay afloat, and a subscription model makes more sense to me than paying for two different versions of pro (PC and mobile).

The old version does work. The reason it may not, will be that the old links to data point at the new v2 files. So you replaced all your data files with v2 files in the old 1.15 app. So no, it won't work.
If you point your data files to github it will still work for you as it was sold.

I can't begrudge paying the price of a paint pot a year to someone developing software I use frequently. People have to pay the bills somehow.

Exactly. The legacy data is still there, as is the legacy app.

Does it work ok/all files there?

So just a few things on this:

Originally the mobile build was slow, that has been reduced to the point it now works. - If you are still seeing issues either mail them or put a comment up on the play store page.

If you had the desktop license you can redeem the old code on their website for 1,000 year subscription to battlescribe (this is linked to your google account mail & I'll be testing if it carries onto the android version)

Now the current issue is not with the app itself, rather the community managed data files, who have known this was coming for months and still haven't fixed their gak.

Working for me, both on Windows and Android. Downloaded the older version a while ago for BtGoA and I've been using it lately for HH. The week or so of ransition between versions was buggy, but no more.

Having been using the free version, and seeing that it's mostly complete, I can't really say that I see how much of a problem the yearly subscription is, given that you don't even need to pay to use it (like me right now) and that the developer is issuing free upgrades for the owners of the old version.

Probably it's something I'm not seeing I guess?

Personally, I hate the idea of subscription based service. Army Builder had a similar thing but they junked it and went to a one-time purchase deal, which is why I prefer using that. Plus, I much prefer the output format that AB produces.
