Hey Guys,

I have not played in a few years and want to put my guards (AM) back on the table...I have read that they are probably one of the worst competitive army but, I am sure they can be built to be somewhat competitive with allies. The goal is to start back playing while not going crazy on the new purchase....

I have everything for guards, including a gak ton of wyverns....What I need to know is what good allies do I need? I have one Knight but I am open to suggestions for good allies, that are mobile and can pack a punch while the guards clean the rest....

Some space marines always make a decent ally for guard, bring in some grav (which makes every list better) and some bikes.

Ravenwing make excellent allies for IG as they cover so many roles that IG is missing. Imperial Knights are good too.

YMMV based on your local meta, but I will share with you my undefeated IG list. I have played this list 5 times, and 3 of those were against drop pod marines.

IG CAD
Pask in a Punisher
2 Executioners

PCS with 4 flamers
3 infantry squads with AC and flamer
Ministorum Priest

Vet squad with AC and 3 plasma

Armored Sentinel with AC
Armored Sentinel with AC
Vulture

Cadian Detachment
CCS with Volkov's cane and AC inside a Chimera.

][ Detachment
Coteaz with 3 psykers

Fortification
Aegis Defense Line

Lord of War
Knight with rapid fire battlecannon and D chainsword

Blob the guard with Coteaz and the Priest and put the tanks behind the infantry. Wrap everything in the Aegis. I put the knight and the Sentinels outside the wall to provide additional protection from DS and so they can move forward to assault or grab objectives.

I always have Coteaz roll on Divination, and split the ][ psykers between Biomancy and Divination depending on which powers I need. Prescience always goes on Pask and I like to have Endurance or Forewarning on the blob squad.

Your victories against drop pod marines are probably mainly due to Coteaz carrying your army (he's pretty good against drop pod marines), but your list is a good example of an IG force backed up by power units (Coteaz and the Knight).

To answer the OP, If you want mobile allies that pack a punch (you probably do if you're trying to be competitive) then SM bikers (such as Ravenwing) are a good choice that have been mentioned already. If you have the Knight and you're playing at a point value where you can run it without being called TFG, then run it.

IIRC there's a formation that makes Wyverns pretty decent.

The victories against drop pod armies are absolutely due to Coteaz. Letting my entire blob squad shoot repeatedly at anything that drops in is incredible. Although I don't often get to use the rule unless something scatters in, it keeps my enemy far enough away that Pask and the Executioners can do their work.

The new Castellan formation is perfect for people who like bringing allies in games.

Yeesh, all the space marine players. :-D

There are MANY allies for guard:
Do you want imperial guard? So many imperial factions, what do you want your army to be?

Filthy Xenos? Necron/Tau/Ork slaves?

Heretics? Imperial Armor heretic lists or just bringing in CSM units work as well. (Imperial armor books are really fun though.)
