Hi Guys,

I don't know if this tread is in the right section...
This is my third temple guard after years of stop (first two were terrible). I really do not have ideas on how to make the base, i mean:
i saw some tutorial for forest base but they won't satisfy me at all. Do you have any idea about how to make a quite decent jungle base? (without making something too professional which takes too much time)

Also feedbacks about my paintjob are highly appreciated.

Thank you
ciao to all!

This is what I did as a base

Aiming for jungle floor covering scatter, comes under the heading of "dead easy"

This is dirt cheap "mixed herbs" from a discount supermarket, painted with a diluted black primer after being stuck down and soaked with dilute PVA.

Drybrushed dark browns through to lighter ones and a mid green.

Would be easy to go for a richer green for a more living look over the dead foliage look, maybe add a few bits of fish tank plant life.

but the base is dead easy.

love the lizard colours, figure something dull but rich as a deep green would work, glossy to look wet

The thing to remember about tropical rain forests is that the multi-layered tree canopies mean there's very little light at the ground. It's a world of perpetual twilight. Anywhere there is light you get a riot of growth so thick anything between the size of a mouse and an elephant find it very hard going.

While under the multiple-canopy trees, there is practically no underbrush, only fallen leaves and tree trunks. All the greenery is dozens if not hundreds of feet overhead.

Of course, that's the reality of tropical rain forests; nothing says you can't do yours differently...

thank you guys for the reply.

@leopard: thank you, it looks very easy way to make the base and it looks good. For sure some bits from fish tank help to give the idea of Jungle/forest. On the other hand as Vulcan says on the lower layer of tropical forest there is very few light and no plant should grow there.

@vulcan: you are right, but i fear that i am not able to express the idea of Jungle without some plants.

I was thinking to litterally overflow the base with fish tank bits to rappresent a light zone of the rain forest, or maybe switch to bayou/swamp base but that lizard looks to bright for a swamp....

The trick is to show jungle foliage without overwhelming the miniature. No matter which way you go, it won't exactly be realistic (reality being either no greenery at all or a massive wall of it hiding the mini), but sometimes reality must give way to practicality... or to art, depending on how you look at it.

I think a nice look for lizardmen jungle bases is to have them darkish browns with sparsely scattered green leafy vegetation throughout a regiment. You do also sometimes get green moss forming in rain forests, but it's hard to represent moss well at that scale.

If you're playing Warhammer Fantasy rather than AoS and have blocks of troops you can try doing regimental bases where you make a jungle scene the size of your regiment then just put models on top of it, it saves you from having to create a mini scene on each individual model and allows you to use some larger vegetation.

Another problem with realistically basing for a jungle. There won't be much greenery (aside from the moss)... but there will be plenty of TREE TRUNKS. Indeed, it would be impossible for a block formation to remain IN formation due to all the trees.

But unless you're planning on replacing half your regiment models with unit fillers of trees at LEAST a foot tall...

It's one of the big things that is making me consider converting my lizzies (when or if I ever get to them) into something more like desert horned lizards. Basing becomes very simple that way...

My idea is to change base and use these models for AoS. So i prefer not to have one single big base.

I think i will give a try to the mixed herbs + fish tank plants. I will post the images when they will be complete.

Thank you

P.S.: I love the idea of the desert lizards, definitly i would love to see them (when they will be ready)
