They seem to alternate between painted models, new releases, and previews of upcoming models. They're not completely useless like GW mailings.

I'm curious, just how long does it take for a model to go from finished sculpt to a released product? It seems that FW keep teasing me with Salamanders (Way back in Blog #2), but every time I check FW, I see yet another AdMech unit (Although I understand the sheer paucity of AdMech from FW or GW require they get some units released to flesh out the range) or another unit from the previous HH book. I can't understand how the Iron Hands got a ton of new stuff alongside the Massacre book, the Nightlords and Word Bearers got a few units, (including characters and a Primarch), even the original 4 traitor legions from Betrayal got some new stuff as well - but the Salamanders have thus far been completely skipped over - not even a hint of characters or anything discounting the teaser of Blog #2. It's hardly as if they're gonna be released in another book, as after Isstvan V they were pretty much out for the rest of the HH. Bah, rant over.

I think at GD on of the FW team said that Salamanders were on of the least popular legions so wouldn't have as much time devoted to them.

I'd be very surprised to find out Salamanders were one of the least popular legions, I thought they were one of the most popular outside of the 'big' modern chapters with codices.

I'm intrigued as to how they would work that out, other than the sales of door sets, shoulder pads and brass etch?

And weren't they one of the last to get those things, such that one or more garage companies were producing sets for them?

@gianlucafiorentini123 - I always thought the Iron Hands were meant to be one of the less popular of the Legions, but look how that turned out - they have no less than 17 dedicated products, including a Primarch, two unique units and a Contemptor Dreadnought. What have the Salamanders got - one Dreadnought and 7 small upgrade packs.

To be honest, I've always had a good reception with my own Salamanders. I'm not sure why they would be not as popular as they, IMHO, have some of the most engaging fluff of all the Legions: One of the smaller Legions, thrown into situations where last stands were an inevitability that only the most resilient of Legions could endure. Re-united with a Primarch distinguished by his humble upbringing, developing into a Legion where humanity and stoic tenacity were key concepts, taking part in the battle of Isstvan V - arguably the most important battle in the history of the Imperium aside from the Siege of Terra - and finally devolving into a Chapter who, when everybody else is out for glory, truly fight for the real Imperium of Man - the people themselves. They literally are the closest thing to real Knights - in terms of morals, honour and actions - the 41st Millenium has. And to boot, as a former Legion and with an aptitude for craftsmanship, they give modellers/players the scope to use just about any Astartes wargear that has existed from the Great Crusade to the 41st Millenium. Oh, and did I mention their Primarch is still alive and has left them a galactic-spanning quest to find his 9 Lost Relics of unparalleled awesomeness?

Personally, I can't see how they could fail to be popular. Presumably people just don't like painting green or flames...

@reds8n - I'm intrigued as to where that mini came from - I can't find it on FW?

EDIT: Oh wait, just noticed the Iron Hands icons of the mini reds8n has shown us. That brings the Iron Hands up to 18 dedicated products!

I personally really like the Salamanders. I just remember hearing that FW didn't think they'd be very popular.

It's not a "dedicated product". It's an Event model.

They've started doing a 40k Event model, a Fantasy Event model, and a Horus Heresy Event model.

And inclusion in the mainline SM codex for several editions with multiple GW produced special characters... I frankly doubt your math on the products as it seems very strongly biased in favor of your argument. Neither legion was focused on but the Salamanders IMO have gotten more love over the years by far when you include both GW and FW. I don't know about you but the former is much more accepted and frankly important to most gamers.

@gianlucafiorentini123 - I do apologise if that came across as a rant at you - it sincerely wasn't. I just get a touch confused at the lack of consistency in FW's releases. You'd think FW would release 3 HH/Space Marine releases a month (As that seems to be the major focus currently), and one Fantasy/40K unit. That way everybody is satisfied to some extent. Of the HH stuff, you'd think they'd give each Legion a special Unit each and once all the currently released Legions have at least one unit, they'd go back and focus on the 'more popular' (though I still disagree there) Legions. However, we just see a seemingly haphazard series of releases that bear no relevance to their 'teasers' or indeed the format of their books. I think I need to stop now, because (despite apperances ) this is hardly a major rage for me - I have other hobbies aside from P&M-ing 40k (Albeit, this is my largest hobby), but it's the source of my continual confusion at the complete lack of pattern in FW's releases.

Edit: @warboss - Hence my confusion - The Salamanders do get more love by GW, so I still can't get my head around how they are supposedly 'less popular' than Iron Hands. As for my maths - take a look at the the Salamanders and Iron Hands categories on FW - granted I may have mis-included the Iron Hands bundle into the bargin, but the Iron Hands do have far more. In comparison Salamanders get nowt.

@Kanluwen - My mistake, apologies.

FW open day, their biggest preview event of the year, is at the end of the month. I'd expect the blog to get more previews next month, once they don't have to save stuff for the big event.

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices.

I would have said white scars are probably one of the least popular mainly because of the white colour scheme. Salamanders, along with white scars, are two of my favourites and I intend on getting a modest force. Lucky they are battle brothers on the allies chart.

Where's that info coming from? I'll be super-pissed if it's true, FW never bothers to show up at events north of the border to my knowledge and forking over ebay prices for several of these isn't an option.

I don't think that FW actually have much of a plan (obviously they have some); they generally seem to work on a "wouldn't it be awesome if we made X?!" basis. This is also what makes them cooler and far more popular than their accountant-oppressed cousins over in GW.

I should maybe clarify, as my previous comments may come over as a bit (Ok, a great deal) petulant or snarky (Really I was just confused more than irritated or angry!), but I don't oppose FW or their products at all - to be honest, I've liked the majority of their releases so far - even the Iron Hands stuff, despite my apparent rage. I guess their loose attitude to releases is much better than GW, and certainly their products are, so tbh I don't really know what made me rail against it - I guess I'm just being way too impatient to see Salamanders stuff. Sorry guys, I'll go back to my cage now...

I hate Space Marines, and even I love Salamanders for pretty much all of these reasons. I don't have plans to ever start Marines, but if for some reason I did I would only be painting green and flames. And I'd paint mine like black guys, not drow.

I always wanted to see a "Salamanders Chapter Upgrade Kit" not unlike the BT or DA kits, with lots of extra shoulder pads and other bits and bobs specifically for Salamanders. Would love to see flamers and meltas with dragon motifs and maws and stuff on them.
