That's very effective indeed! For larger scale smoke I uses insulation foam, but it's a bit Crazy...

lol... what a clever idea... this i will try too... i think you could have saved a bit of paint by applying PVA first.. then the pores of the sponge would have been filled and you would only have needed to paint the true surface then...but the effect is really cool!

Spring loaded fins on rockets are pretty common. I think you can get away with that detail plausibly. The smoke trail looks awesome.

Thanks again for all the comments all!
Graven... Insulation foam would be a good material to use for larger elements! Will have to try it out sometime.
Vik... Thanks for the tip! After work I might get home and find the paint has been sucked into all of the recesses so I might hav to give it a coat of PVA... but I will wait and see... I quite liked all of the little pockets and bubbles inside the foam.... gave the smoke a more "realistic" feel perhaps....
Warboss... Cheers mate.... yeah I think the spring loaded fins idea is sound! Thanks for the positive comment.... that's my first attempt to I am pretty happy with it! Onto the main body of the Mech next.... Oh... i meant to say.. you are 100% correct.... the modelling / painting.... certainly does calm the head after a mad day at work.. definitely a psychological thing as well as a physical hobby!
but..... this week I feel will be given to the LoER Comp.... 2 weeks to go and although I don't have a huge amount to do..... if I don't keep going with it.. time will run away from me....
Cheers All,

Looking like a well aged pump station! Although the damaged parts will make the Adeptus Mechanicus fret!

hey guys! Thanks for the comments! I am really happy with how it has come out actually... and for once I am happy with my photography too! I sorted the settings on my tablet and can now see some of the smaller and finer details of the piece!
to be honest... like all of these things I could have just kept going and adding more and more bits and bobs... but decided to call a halt to the works and leave it when I am happy with it!
Cheers all & good luck to all who are in the comp!

Hey all,
Hope all is good,
Tonight was a wee start on chipping Lothar... going to keep ot Very simple.... heavy rust scratches then newer metalic scratches.... maybe decals... then wash.... and add dust/dirt to the underside and legs... then finally smoke marks on the rocket tubes amd its done.
Got the rust scratches on the cockpit tonight.... and believe it or not, this is me trying to be restrained... haha...

what currently is the most eyecatching (despite the totally awesome posters, the green goo and the general rusty rivets ) is the ground... i have to say the mix of so many grains of sand and stones... that is selling the piece for me!
and that walker body looks very promising!
(zooming in i found a small mould line...at the entrance... )

Thanks mate.... as explained later I don't think I am going to have much time for the rest of this week but I will be back to it for the rocket launchers and legs as soon as I can!

Thanks Vik..... really appreciate it.... yeh I did take quite a lot of time and layers on sand / stones / dirt to build up a believable ground cover.... glad you noticed!
NNNNNOooooooo.... I will sort it!..... or cover it with something! hehe!
Hey guys, thanks again for the comments!!! Got some RL things to be doing for the rest of this week .....( registering for my architects Part 3 "Final" set of examinations... so will be concentrating on those.... but I will keep a close eye on the LoER comp... kind of hoping it goes to public vote... would be nice to see how well.. or not... the Pumping station does..... fingers crossed I get a couple of votes!

Ahoy all, hope all is good.....
Managed to sneak a couple of hours to get so e more work done on Luther. Added the rust to the rocket launchers amd armour and then used a 6b graphite pencil to add some metalic scratches and edges.....I added a layer of matte varnish and might add ssome oil and dust..... then some dirt to the feet and he is finished....
Would love some c&c .....
Oh.... IMHO the rocket it looking pretty sweet.... maybe some metalics to the tail end and its done too!
Cheers

luther looks promising... but remember you wouldn´t want to be too close to a life rocket launcher... you´ll get burnt... so a little scorch marks will help carry the convincing... the blast effect is by the way super cool!!!

Beautiful! I like that a lot, as Vik suggested, soot marks on the ends of the launcher barrels will sell it more.

Thats a great looking walker ! Might have to get one of those myself.
Like the smoke effect on the rocket , good effect with cheap materials Do you think the paint will stay stuck to the foam if its handled / boxed up ?
I agree with whoever said a coat of PVA might have hardened it up a bit and help the paint stick.
You're well on track with the weathering but I find its best to get Decals on early so the weathering goes on them too !

That's quite effective. The chain needs one of those hooks or loops on it, like This If you don't mind me suggesting.

Yeah get the decals on so that they too can get muddy, sooty, scratched and chipped too!

The chain could use a little dulling. Seems way too shiny to me. Aside from that, it looks really good and the rocket came out great.

Hi all,
Thanks again for the comments! Everyone is very much appreciated!
totally take on board the comment about the chain... I will get some "coffee" grime on it this evening!
With regards to decals..... I was thinking of adding a "kill list" on the front flat section of armour.... going to try and free hand it to get a nice rough appearance as if the pilot has just painted it on himself..... got an idea on how to make the earliest kills look more worn.. and then have some nice new fresh kill marks! apart from that I might add a decal or 2 to the knees or the spaced armour.... but not too much...
http://imagesia.com/0-3b47e-6777ef2-xl_6o8y something like this perhaps......
smoke definitely going to be added to the launchers and the back of the cockpit.....
Then its going to have some barbed wire & mud on the base.... with a dry dust covering and he is done!
Thanks again guys,

Ahoy all.... hope all is good!
Well... tonight I have finished Lothar..... addsd some mud and barbed wire for a nice base & painted the cables to contrast against the armour.... added dust and some oil and a small decal to the cockpit..... (yes I know it is Russian and this is meant to be an Axis walker.....but it is just for my shelf!
Am over the moon with how it has come out & really enjoyed the painting part for the first time!
Love to hear your comments!
