Or idear. Theres no "are" there. Its idea. But people seem to stick random letters or omit random letters or something.
It must be a favorite (or favourite, I understand this is correct spelling now) past time for people.

As a user of english as a second language I had hell trying to study phonetics and the gazzillions of words not following them.
But my favorite (notice my US corrupted spelling) words are Kansas and Arkansas...... Why oh God! Why US citizens can´t use the same sound for the same letters?????????

"ghoti," an alternative spelling of fish, according to certain English pronunciations: GH as in "laugh," O as in "women" and TI as in "nation."

Why US citizens can´t use the same sound for the same letters?????????

Ahem. The language in question is English, not American (although our colonial cousins have simplified some things; color for colour, etc).

LIAR! Your little flag clearly states that you're made in the EU. Probably Brussels.

Well, we don't like to dictate how the colonies pronounce their own place names. Bear in mind I come from a place called Worcestershire that is pronounced 'wus te sher'...

Even here in the "colonies" we pronounce things different depending on where you are. Houston, Texas is Yhoo-sten but Houston St. in New York is Howse-ton (like House ton).

Oh, man, street names in Chicago are pronounced wackily. Paulina is Paw-line-ah, Devon is Du-vahn, etc.

Miguelsan, I wouldn't call that "mangling." It happens to pretty much all loan words in any language. Ask them what they think of people pronouncing "shogun" as "sho-gahn," or what the French think of oh, any number of words English has mangled.

My personal pick: "ordinance" instead of "ordnance."

In Japanese they take foreign loan words from various western languages for things or concepts they din't have, put them into Japanese pronunciation and spell them with Katanaka. Take the word "arubeyeto", derived from the German "arbeit" meaning work -- the Japanese use that for part-time work.

They also like to contract and combine words, for example -- "fureetaa" -- a combination of English freelancer and part-timer, meaning someone who is mainly unemployed and engages in casual work.

Pasocon = personal computer
Patokaa = patrol car (police car)
Pureystay = PlayStation
