Hi guys

I didn't get much done this week but I'm really happy with this simple conversion, based on the Skaven pack master from The Island of Blood (shoddy name GW ) starters set. I find its the little details that make a model for me. In this case it was removing the warp stone and replacing it with a battery pack. The idea for this model came about because if I were a Scavvy charged with goading the zombies forward I wouldn't want to touch them. So I'd get my hands on an Acme Zombie Prod. Buy now and it comes with an exclusive sheet metal pinny.

Very nice idea! And looks great too. Can't wait to see it with those zombies.

The new guy's great. Really love the colours you use on your models. They're always nice and subdued but still manage to really pop. I'm not so good at the painting side to be honest, everything always comes out as a mess!
Will be updating my guys fairly soon (PIP) but I've had a couple of my British mates staying with me out here so it all got put on hold for a bit.

Ugh, I know - Island of Blood is such a rubbish name! It's like they just ran with the first name that got thrown out then all went for beers. I really like the new guy, and your changes on the rod itself are seamless. It's really hard to tell what parts you've added, which is always a fantastic sign.

His bionic eye looks rather snazzy - any chance we could get a close up on that please?

Excellent job as always Peter

Scavvy may not be stupid enough to touch a plague zombie, but he does like the idea of wearing a sheet metal pinny when using a huge electrical prodder

I was just about to head to bed and thought I'll just have a quick look at Dakka. (Ok Ok I was looking for comments on here)

Xenon - Cheers. Well don't hold your breath on the the Zombie front. They will be a November, at the earliest, purchase.

Jackanory - Looking forward to seeing a painted Gonk. I hope you have fun with your buddies first though. When I was 10 I asked my Dad, who was an art teacher, how to dry brush. To show me how he took a Zombie and painted the skin fire dragon crimson. Then took straight bleached bone and dry brushed it (I might still have it, if I can find it tomorrow I'll post a picture). It was then I decided I wanted to do a better job because it looked pretty bad. So practice, effort and about 19 years of wanting to do a better job... keeps on improving my skills. The other thing that helped me was getting advice from a couple of GD winners and anyone who had a nice technique or finish I liked (Ilfana's ace Raven Guard Captains skin is a prime example). I also have a note book to write down my paint recipes, so I replicate a colour.

monkeytroll - well it is an Acme Zombie Prod with sheet metal pinny and we all know how good their products were for Wile E. Coyote!

Scarper - When the rumours first started Isle of Blood sounded ok. But Blood Island just sounds dumbed down to me.

As for the bionic eye ta dah. Really easy but looks good.....

Most importantly you must mix the gs properly (cut out the bit where the blue and yellow meet) and leave it to cure for about 20 - 30 mins.

1. To make the base of the implant. Take one small ball of green stuff and put it in the eye socket. Flatten it into the socket at the front and then kinda do the same from the side, getting a nice crisp corner. When you are happy with the shape leave it to dry properly.

2. To make the lense. Take a tiny, and I mean tiny, amount of green stuff and roll it into a ball (I find a clean wet painting tile perfect for rolling green stuff) then I gently finishing off with my thumb and forefinger. Place the ball in the centre of the implant area and I use a clay shaper (number 0, extra firm, taper point) to poke into the middle of the ball to make the lense.

3. I like to add a little gs wire to the back of the head because all the great 40k GW artworks have loads of wires poking out the back of peoples heads.

Hope that helps. Now I am off to bed. (I'm tired again so hope it makes sense)

Hope you don't mind me jumping in here Peter but an alternative way of doing the lenses that I find to be pretty effective is to use pins with flat, dome heads. You can drill into the model a bit and then cut the pin down so that there's only a little bit of the shaft left. Once you've pushed it into the hole you drilled, the head of the pin is what makes the lens. It's how I did the goggles on my rebel goblins. With more "human" models you might need to find smaller pin heads as they suit the cartoony look I used on my grotz less.

Jackanory not a problem at all. You should have stuck a picture up too, so I hope you don't mind that I have.

For those who haven't seen, this is Jackanory's flamer grot, that I think is just beautiful. With aforementioned goggles and lenses (and wicked little grot mask).

I DID NOT MAKE THIS MODEL JACKANORY DID

I might give it a try next time I build a flamer armed model. Jack what is the red plastic from?

Ah cool, not at all! Thanks for the promo I don't really like posting pictures on other peoples' blogs without permission but I'm glad people like him.
The red plastic, I think, was the cartridge from a ballpoint pen. I think it was one of the really small pens you get in betting shops (though I don't really ever go inside those places). I can't really remember where I got it from 100% though.
I really want to put some shots of them painted but they're a bit far away at the moment I'm going home at Christmas, think I'm going to bring them back with me when I return.

Jackanory's flamer rocks!

As for the Zombie Packmaster, he's definitely ace! I had noticed something wasn't exactly like the IoB arms, and I hadn't found until you mentioned the wyrdstone / battery swap! So great!

I do have a question though... What did you use as a tabard on him? Looks like a piece of armour, ou a small tank track...

Jackanory - Phew.... Almost Christmas...... Fly to England..... Celebrate Christmas..... Find Rebel Grots..... (Celebrate New Year?).... Fly to Japan......Paint.........Yay!
(Ah yeah I hadn't thought of it like that. I've put your name in capitals underneath him now. )

Ruzto - Cheers

Yggdrasil - Thank you. The Zombie Packmaster's metal pinny is a groin guard from the Ork Nobs sprue.

Now moving away from Scavvies for a moment....I have a super idea for a Necromunda character using one of the new models from the Dark Eldar range....though I'm not telling you guys what yet because I need to see the model in the flesh first.
(I will not start a new army, I will not start a new army, I WILL NOT START A NEW ARMY but I might paint a few wyches)

Thanks guys

When I saw what you said about doing some dark eldar I didn't understand why such a good modeller/painter would waste their time on such crappy models.
I've since seen that there are in fact new models coming out...holy crap they're awesome!
Might have to make my first ever full army...

Hmmmm not checking ones own thread because one is needing a break from scavvies Doh!

Scarper - No worries. Well after painting my Snakebite Nob I will finish the 2nd scaly and the zombie prodder (hmmm that sounds rude). Then I will breath and built two mutants (wings and eye stalks).

Jackanory - LOL. I can understand the confusion. I have the only two nice models from the original Dark Eldar range: Urien Rakarth and Dark Eldar Haemonculus with Destructor. I bought them last month after reading Dark Eldar rumours (best get them just in case GW stop selling them). Now the new models I assume will be great and l will probably will never paint my two.
Have your mates left yet.... Gonk is calling you

tcraigen - Thank you

Migs - I will get you a group pic when... I have painted the 2nd scaly and prodder..... and when you've painted a half a squad of Raging Bulldons (this part is open for debate ). I'll keep you motivated (in the style of a bond villain)

And a quick phone pic of the scaly's rear. I'm hoping the jeans and t shirt will fit better once they have been dirtied up and he has some skin colour.

Thanks for the kind words and comments they are keeping me on track (via a slight orky detour)

Cheers

Hehe I'm afraid there's an elf cleric who's looking forward to exploring Faerun whose voice is a little stronger (well she does have the divine might of Lathander behind it) so Gonk has been pushed back yet further. Hopefully I'll get some good progress on her done tonight then I can get back to putting the finishing touches on him (he's going to need a hell of a lot of c&c).

Hi guys,

A little Necromunda update using phone camera. Now madmartykmf's http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/259854.page really nice terrain blog has inspired me. I've decided that a painted gang need painted terrain to play over. So since I've had the bulkheads undercoated for years and over the last few nights the thought of detail painting has made me shudder.... so I started on some terrain... I've painted more bulkheads in the red style (now have 18 painted) like the scavvies bases (I really like the colour and en mass they look great).

This colour scheme almost matches up with some old cities of death terrain I was "given" out of a bin by my local GW. It was their intro board 4'x1.5' with all the buildings glued down. They were instructed to get rid of it when the realm of battle battle boards were released. Right place right time . I removed most of the buildings which are all one level box shaped. Then cut the board down to about 4'x12" so the built on cliff face with mechanicum complex entrance are still in one piece, which makes a great defensive position in 40k.

These three are a test run of a different colour scheme and still WIP. Black Undercoat, Scorched Brown Base, Boltgun Metail dry brush then Mig rust and light rust stippled on. Second time I've used MIG pigments (and the first time was on half a cog on my Ork Nobs base) and I'm quite happy with the way they have turned out, so far. I need to seal them now. Then I need to dirty it up a bit like the red ones....using greasy smears at the top to tie the two styles together.

Any comments, criticisms with helpful suggestion are more than welcome.

By the way does anyone know if MIG pigments will wash out of my favourite jeans?

Peter

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Ok I think they are done? Pic 1 as above, Pic 2 sealed and pci three some greasy weathering.

Nice and easy and quick to do....and another three to be done this weekend.

Right a productive morning now lunch with my sister and then a beer festival with Martin. Then maybe depending how much beer we drink some Necromunda.

Can't believe you're such a tease with the scaly - Rear shots? Pfft

How do you seal your terrain, btw? I'm always worried any sprays will just dissolve the powder or blow it off... (Horrible, horrible experience in the past. So many hours... *shudder*) It's awesome that you can get such a nice effect with a fairly simple technique - was it hard to do?

That's enough questions for a while, I reckon Keep it up!

Very nice weathering, am I right in thinking that you can't buy that terrain any more? It seems a shame when you can make it look so good.
