yeah,
Boom [ blog view ] obtained!

So I wasn't best happy with the shallow turret wrecks. Sharazad though it wasn't obvious what happened to the top bits.
So I cast another turret to use as extra conversion fodder (I can cast as many as I want muhhahahaha) to beef them up a bit.

I chopped this fella up into lots of sections and added them to the small wrecks.
Tinkers gonna Tink.
Beefed up mini wrecks...

While I had the tools out again I decided to put more holes in the tall wrecks... Just to make it more obvious they are dead.
So now they are even more shot up...

And started messing about with paint...
I undercoat sprayed black then dusted with 2 coats of white on the outside.
Next I hit them with the vallejo wash and then some slate model maker spray.

The guy at the front has been give some drybrushing with citadel greys and black.
Followed with targeted black inks...

Behind you!

The dry brush looks really good. That little more effort paid off I think. It was a good idea to make them bigger. The also all look different from each other which for grey static objects (even when positioned differently) is not always a given.
Are you going to do more or was that it?
Maybe some colour damage from the paint of the ships? I would love to see a picture of one of these wrecks with one of the wrecks of the ships. Like it just happened.

I think your dust idea was good, it gives them an extra dimension and a more realistic feel.
So yeah conclusion it is very eye pleasing IMO.

They look good and I like the center one as well, my only comment is that they look like Stone and not Death Star metal.

I also like the Mini Wreaks the way they were before. They exploded and the debris floated off into space. I also think there should be some wires and cables and broken machinery inside.

Just my 2 cents

Yeah,
I'm going to have a paint rethink.

Today I created a barrel and made two copies via a press mold.
They have a steel pin for strength.

They didn't come out very well.
So I'm going to try casting it in resin.
First step silicone mold.

yeah,
1) FFGs factory in china has a problem and wave 2 has been delayed till February.
2) A millenium Falcon sold for $250 on eBay.
3) I spent the morning crying into my cornflakes...

These events are not unrelated.

I decided to take a break from turret work.
I printed some more Deathstar, this time on sticky back plastic.

I used some to fix scuffs and tears in my board.
And some more to cover simple 3D boxes made out of foam core.

Photos : )

I've not entirely worked out what the purpose of the 3D death blocks are... yet.

But they can be used to mark out a reduced area for standard games and make them more umm 3D.
Using the turrets and 3D death boxes I've marked out a 3' x 3' area, and used 6 wrecks as asteroids...
So this is pretty close to a tournament table but in 3D?

Wow your board is looking amazing Panic, the extra 3d death blocks are really pulling it together very nicely.

I think the painted turrets look great, you could have a wrecked one one with a X- Wing half stuck out.

Never played X-wing, but always been interested to when seeing some of the guys at my flgs play... Your work definitely makes it much more appealing! The table and turrets look sick!

How did the mold making of the barrels go?

So, when can we expect to see the Falcon on that awesome table

yeah,
Thanx guys,

The barrel fell over / moved while the mold was setting. So the part is in there just not where it should be.
It'll take a little while to try and save... I'll have a go at that later.

Yeah,
Second barrel mold worked better.
I used a cone counter to make a funnel and hold the bit in place for the silicone.
Had to break the pot to get the mold out.

There is a bubble at the tip so each barrel needs to be hollowed out manually...

Looks great! So how did you get the barrel out of the mold? Did you cut the mold in half length or widthwise? Or something else entirely? I'm a total nub.

Thought you might find this interesting - I picked up some of the CorSec bases, stands and mounts.

This is a 80mm mount, with the nubs, and a 2" pole - for the Hallmark Lambda Shuttle:

It actually does not over lap the width of the base by all that much. Working on a card for the base as well.

If I have one complaint - after testing on a similar 40mm CorSec base - it is that the pilot token cards swivel on the base a little too easily (though there is a plastic washer insert that does help with keeping it centered properly).

Link to a few more pictures - including the Asteroid shaped bases.

They just pull out, i spray release agent in there and the silicone stretches enough to allow the part out.

I agree, I've tried a more solid colour scheme see below. some cogs would look nice, but i think i'm going to skip it the turrets are taking long enough for some terrain!

JustinKase wrote:Thought you might find this interesting - I picked up some of the CorSec bases, stands and mounts.
I really like the asteroid ones, but I'm not sure about the metal poles as all the ship models have plastic poles.
Thanx for the photo looks great!

OK so progressed a little today.
mixed up some GW Mechanicus Standard Grey base foundation paint with various ammounts of white and painted the model with more wet paint.
as dry brushing was making the turrets look too much like stone.

Next I was going to just black out all the damaged areas... smoke and soot!
But then decided to use colour so that the damage has just happened.
I used foundation khorne red followed by modemates liquid mud.
then picked out some bits with bright troll slayer orange and skull white. and washed with modelmates liquid rust.

I also realised that the top of the turrets is blank and needs something...

yeah,
I got the Full set of DEAD turrets painted dead today.

how I painted them dead.
Spoiler:

-GW Mechanicus Standard Grey base foundation paint with various ammounts of white.
-foundation khorne red in the damaged areas
-cover the red with modemates Liquid mud.
-Skull white edging on the burn bits as a base for a orange layer.
-bright troll slayer orange
-then small bits of skull white
-Liberal wash with modelmates liquid rust.

Next stage was done quickly so that I pulled some of the black onto the grey...
- I paint the black lines with a mix of chaos black and badab black and then wipe down the surface with a wet tissue...
- The water wipes away lots of the modelmates and exposes the white orange and grey under it.
- small bits of almost dry badab black also stains/streaks the grey ... I use up and down motion to get streaks...

more photos of details...
Spoiler:
Dead Big Turrets

Make them dead Blast holes!

Dead Baby Turrets

And having a little play around checking out how the look on the board.

I'm happy with them they look good enough.

These look really awesome and it looks like a really fun game.

Have you thought of making some massive capital ships (like Mon Calamari or a Star Destroyer) for the little guys to fly around? I should imagine that because of the scale you would only fit half a Star Destroyer down one half of the table though.. maybe you could make a custom mission where the TIE Fighters have to defend the Start Destroyer from the Y-Wings or something.. so much potential for Star Wars Awesomeness!!!!

Thanx, yeah the game is good and I'm surprised by the tactical abilitys the game has - with the variation the character pilots give squad building.

yeah,
Turrets are on the home straights now.
Today I completed building them.
The turrets are connected to the body with magnets, The Turret are assembled and the guns go up and down and around.
They're stiff to move vertically, I'm not sure it was worth the extra effort.

I've washed them in hot soapy water to get the release agent off.

If the world hasn't ended I'll get them painted tomorrow!
