Thanks guys! Yes, my advanced studio of strapping an aquarium lamp to a shoebox paid off.

I had to rush, as I was supposed to be getting a train about half an hour later.

I hope it gets a couple votes, but I don't think it's what must people will associate with "monster", heheh.

The horsy might not be the most nightmare-inducing of the lot, but you did a very nice job with your shading and blends. The water effect was also very ambitious and well executed. You got a vote from me as well.

My Little Kelpie: Vallejo Gels are Magic

A very long time ago (I think I can use that expression despite being under 30) I used that water gel with yellow and red inks to try and make fire, blasting from a High Elf dragon. What I actually achieved was rather explosive vomit.
Didn't keep the result, oddly enough.

Are Warpaints the cheaply-priced ones from Cypress that were mentioned here awhile back? Any good?

Thanks!

And those are the ones. I'm planning on getting hands on with them when I get home midweek. The texture is pretty okay. They claim to be airbrush and brush suitable which is a bit strange to handle.

First day back at the paint fountain.
Sadly not super productive. Been feeling really groggy all day, not sure what's up, but it feels like my ear canals are hotter than the rest of my head.

My own "To-Do list". (Argh!)

-First half of my Tanith (second half are in customs and tax assessment at the moment). +2 more lasgun +2 plasma gunners. Takes my total to [mumbles] nearly 100...

- Sentinel from eBay (astounding custom work, kudos to the creator).
- Tank

Stripping all of my second hand mordies. How many mordies? Lots.

Look at all that 1990s grass!

And what would this topic be without commissars..

And this old bird. She still needs about a month's repair.

Mordian story time! This year I made a Mordian costume on the cheap. I was given an old black-blue peaked cap, a USMC dress jacket (retired and with insignia removed) and I found some leather ammo pouches and a strap belt.

I've always felt a bit weird about the jacket, but being as I'm in the UK, people will only ever assume I'm in costume (or a strange person). I still tried to be as respectful as possible to the materials. Instead of cutting it, all edits are removable. I keep it out if the way and carefully stored in case someone may have use some day.
I replaced the buttons with plain silver, made and machine-embroidered new red cuffs with golden Aquilas, that fit over the old ones using the button grips. I fitted some brass Aquilas to the collar. Fitted some chest insignia and built/embroidered custom epaulettes that can be removed. I made some blue pants up with a tear-off blood stripe for the day. I already owned knee high buckle boots.

So, I went out in this to attend a meet-up at WHW, I stowed the hat, trousers, ammo and epaulettes in my bag to cause minimum stir on the street, but wore the altered jacket as it was plain too bulky to carry.

I hopped on the bus, and the conductor waved me on without looking. I stopped, extremely confused.
He looked up and apologised profusely, "I'm so sorry duck, I thought you were a bus driver! Go on, get on, I've just insulted you."
I laughed my ass off and insisted on paying anyway.

Mordian bus conductor. Beep beep.

Okay, a slightly more realistic target, this part is my army for the CoW in September... Minus a couple of things. Some more plasma due in.
Everything apart from Very 80s Commissar in the middle, Yorkie and my tank need redoing from scratch.

I also have to paint 1000pts of Skitarii plastic for a friend who can't.

That still looks like a bunch of dudes to get through! Stripping minis is my least favorite task. I have a tyranid army that I am ignoring that need to be completely repainted.
Good luck with your project!

I hate stripping plastics. Metal I use this estasol sample jar that my partner brings home, and it's exceptional. The paint just floats off.
Getting them off those horrible bases was a pain though. I lost so many tabs.

When the weather is nicer tomorrow I'll see if I can remember to take a photo of the jacket for you. My house mostly faces the rising sun, but in the evening it is not so good for taking pictures.

I've laid down about £3.90 a piece on my Tanith - I was incredibly lucky and got two large lots for cheap. Gaunt is over by the Sentinel. He's going to be my Lord Commissar. The man holding the heavy bolter on his own is going to be modded up to be Bragg.

The majority of the mini work is going to be getting that commissar cadet squad assembled as they don't have arms, I'm converting them to all have lasguns. The female commissar is going to be the sergeant for that squad, as her weapons are correct.

I have about 15-20 different commissars, because I've been trying to collect this set: http://www.solegends.com/citcat911/c2039impguard-h.htm I'm now only missing three (the gasmask commissar 4 on the top row, commissar and Las gun 1, commissar and las pistol). Often they come with other commissars or weird old figures.

collecting commissars... well there could be worse obsessions^^... totally understand this^^

and now that you´ve mentioned him, i seem him too^^

do commissar cadets wear epaulettes too?...mad robot does these arms too iirc...could be a fitting replacement then...

Haha, it's not an obsession, it's a very slow burn background hobby. Especially as you can only really field 2 commissars in a bound 1000pt army (unless you're me and doing this cadet squad). At any time there's two of the three I need on eBay, but I wait for a day when I have some spare change or sold something off to make a little money. I've ended up with some very odd (and in some case quite pervy) spares.

Cadet commissars are really not very well described in the fluff.
Cadet Commissars are given the standard arms and equipment of a Guardsman, although they retain their distinctive uniforms. These uniforms differ from those of a full Commissar by featuring blue trim and a specific Cadet emblem.
That's all we get.

Thanks for the tip about arms! I'd been trying to do it with Workshop pieces, but seeing as nobody remembers these guys, I think some generic arms and then proper lasguns will be fine!

Raging Heroes has 3 sisters who can stand as female Commissars if you have not gotten them yet, and they come with a cigar smoking, picklehauber helmet pooch!

I'm afraid to take part in the events I do, figures gotta be 75% GW minimum. :( I've got a few awesome 3rd party figures I'd use otherwise.

Got the customs fee for my remaining Tanith today. At around £90 I plain can't afford it, so sadly they're going to have to sit there until I work out what to do. I don't use credit cards and hate borrowing money.
Time to rummage in my box of weird investment pieces and sell I guess!

Oddly appropriate, here's some more art for the story I'm writing, a clearer version:

Ouch thats a hefty customs fee.

It really is, it was clearly labelled $400 parcel with secure packaging. They're fething with me as I got a "revised customs fee" charge tacked on.

That is usually only added when they have reason to suspect the value is wrong.
"Second hand metal miniatures: no lead content"
Unless someone in Liverpool knows the value of 1990s Imperial guard figures, that's fething obscene.

customs is horrible... i dont know what the employment qualification are but being a nasty person i think ranges very high in my humble opinion...
a friend here on dakka sent me a huge present ...and i had to pay 30 bucks too....i was sooooo (/$&)(=)&%§ about that that i made a big scene and yelled at the top of my voice at the customs...

also...i think they only let it sit there for a short time... unless you want to have it returned to sender i would advise you to reat quik...

There's no one person I can complain to. Whoever I get on the phone will be not responsible for what happened.

I simply don't have £90 so I'm gonna have to suck it up if it goes back again. In the meantime I'm trying to sell off some old gear to raise it. I have 18 or 21 days, can't remember.

Yeah thats another flaw with customs you cant dispute the fee until after you've paid it.

I tend not to order stuff from overseas any more I used to get stitched by people who label the contents value wrongly by adding the postage to it

...85 before duplicates of Gaunt, Milo, Dorden.
I'm looking to get to 100 even plus Gaunt, and stop for my own sanity.

Hopefully that won't overtake the amount of Tanith in the actual books.

I'm a sucker for Mordians. If they're cheap I have to "rescue" them.

Yeah, I think Praetorians are the hardest to find along with Tanith, and they're nearly as expesive for single figures.

Mordies must be the only army I know that actually lower the value of an eBay lot when included. :p

I don't know if we just hate the USMC aesthetic over here, or what. I've paid about £1 per miniature on average for mine, including postage.
