As much as I applaud GW trying to get better, they seem to still be making two missteps for every step forward. Prices are still the big WTF. Putting out new $30 character figures is just silly, for example.

Another one of the big points for their still-falling-downness is the rising costs of their board games. Each iteration is MORE expensive than the last, and its getting into silly territory. They should really srive to keep them under 100.

And why the heck didn't Kill Team come with a set of dice, some sort of ruler and maybe some templates? It would have been a complete mini-game if they'd just put that little extra effort into it.

Finally, I fear they are bring a sort of End Times to the 40K 'verse, and after AoS that just makes me nervous as a consumer. What have I bought are they about to just invalidate - Books? Models? The company is at a juncture I just don't trust what it is they're about to do.

It never ends well

The Emperor finally dies, and the Eye of Chaos grows until it consumes all.

Then the Emperor is reborn, as a god, and decides to recreate everything as bubbles within his dreams....

Did I ever mention that I loathe the fluff in AoS?

There is definitely some improvement, the start collecting kits, the emphasis on new mini armies (though it started while Kirby was still at the helm) and the improved communication with the fan base are all steps in the right direction. Still, I feel that he has received way to much credit for what has been, let's be honest, obvious moves. Until recently, GW (and any other major mini gaming company afaik) had bundles at reduced prices for each armies, and interacting with the customers, especially in this age of twitter and social medias isn't something revolutionary (it speaks more badly on Kirby that he avoided doing so more than anything else). As long has the prices for most new kits, especially clampack characters, remain ridiculously high (nowadays, I practically only buy bundles or second hand, has it's only thing that I feel are affordable, and I make a good income, so I can't even think of how a student must feel) and that the game balance is all over the place, I'll reserve my judgement. 40K 8th edition's gonna be the acid test for him.

From a retailers perspective there have been some good changes. A few execution issues in bringing them about though.

I think it's starting, but has a long way to go. There's still tremendous rules bloat in 40k, still ridiculous prices and pushing out tons of mini-books priced the same as the bigger ones (and keeping the ridiculous "collectors editions" for 3x the price with "limited" quantities), still the web bundles that save you nothing but clicks. We have no way of knowing if Rountree is going to address those things or keep them the way they are. The Start Collecting sets are a great idea, going back to monthly with White Dwarf is a good idea. Listening and interacting with the community is a great idea.

They are crawling towards better things, but there's still a lot of bad that may or may not be undone and still a ton of sour taste left in people's mouths from the Kirby era.

I think the new cult release is pretty clearly an indication not much has changed £25 for what's essentially a box of guardsmen.

We can't blame Kirby anymore time to face it GW is not going to make the hard choices it needs to if they want to avoid that looming cliff.

Huh, interesting times for GW then.

I wonder, though, how much of the stuff happening right now has been in the pipes making its way long before Rountree came into position?
Does anyone have any info?

All the stuff people like is getting credited to the new boss
All the stuff people don't like is credited to the old boss

That seems to be about the gist of it.

Well, when it was just the old boss, it was just the stuff people don't like...

Things are definitely improving but there's a long way to go. One thing I can say though is that this year I've spent more on new GW products than probably the last 5 combined. They seem to be putting out exactly the minis that I wanna buy lately.

I haven't really been playing GW games though, but that's mostly just due to the spare time I have little of. Hoping to try and get some 40K in once I can get my genestealers up and running.

WFB is still dead, so at this point it doesn't really matter what they do as far as I'm concerned. But it is certainly nice that they're treating their ever shrinking customer base marginally better I suppose.

Although if that return of 40k Epic rumor turns out true I might be tempted to give them another chance.

Honestly, if the BFG relaunch is close to what BFG was rules wise with some more plastic ships, I'll buy it. I'm back to 6th in WFB and 3rd in 40K so the only thing they can lure me with there is new models.

For 4-6th WFB, 2-5th 40k, and similar timeframe gaming

Looking for dice from the new AOS boxed set and Dark Imperium on the cheap. Let me know if you can help.
