i play with armies that use lots of fire-power but at the same time aren't completely screwed if the get into close-combat and i play iron warriors in 40k if that helps also good or evil makes no difference to me

neither chaos or beasts of chaos have particularly good shooting. they are CC and magic orientated armies. shooting is a lot less effective in WFB than it is in 40K, so it may seem like youre getting a bad deal if youre only just comming WFB. there also arent really any armies that are good at everything (like SM in 40K). if you want a heavy shooting army it will come at the expense of your CC and magic. make sure you understand that before you jump into something.

the best armies i can suggest that are good at shooting without sacrificing CC too much are Empire and Skaven. both have very good shooting elements and have good combat elements to go with them.

If we were to play each other in a tournament, not only would I table you, I would murder you, your family, every woman you ever loved and burn down your house. I mean, what's the point in winning if you allow people that don't take the game seriously to live?

I'd say Dwarves or Empire as he can take fairly good core troops and lots of real artillery as opposed to the nutty pseudo and semi-artillery that we Skaven tend to invest in.

Penetrating so many secrets, we cease to believe in the unknowable. But there it sits nevertheless, calmly licking its chops.

Do you want to be playing with the same kind of army in fantasy? I mean, youre changing game system, doing exactly the same thing, just with an extra phase to waste!

Go dwarves. cheap to get with the bfsp set, even the shooty ones still have T4 and insane leadership.

Id thoroughly reccomend trying a balanced army, though.

Dwarves fit your army description perfectly. Great core units, lots of powerful guns that hit on 3+ at close range etc etc. Rape gun.. err.. I meant Organ gun for the winz!

Another Option is High Elves, They have the always strike first rule, some of the best bolt throwers in the game as well as one of the best spell lists.

I started fantasy with a dwarf army. Quite frankly, if i weren't such a fan of their fluff I would've dropped them a long time ago. While I agree with everyone's assessment of them having great core, great shooting, and great leadership. But the whole lack of maneuverability is a huge issue as a movement of 3 doesn't get you very far. Also, don't make the mistake I first made by going straight gunline and having almost every atillery in the book, cause going straight gunline and not moving and just playing in the 'casino' of the artillery dice gets old and very very quickly.

Secondly, if you're just starting out in fantasy, why not try a demons list? They've got great shooting unit like flamers and horrors, great cc with almost anything khorne, codex creep and ITP on their side (which is great for beginners). Not to mention if you don't like fantasy, you can just use them for 40k.

Some of you are saying Chaos others Dwarves.

I say put the two together and join those few of us who are Hard Core Chaos Dwarf Players. You want the best of many worlds, hardcore shooting and shooting that both cancels your opponents shooting and slows them down at the same time then bring on the Earthshakers. 30pt Bolt Throwers, 2 per special choice, and Blunderbusses backed up by CD Sorcerer's and you're in heaven man. Best place to find speciailised help for this army is:

http://www.chaos-dwarfs.com/index.php

The army does not have a current army book but the ravening hordes list is still available and official. Furthermore one of the top 17 players in Australia invited to what is considered the Australian Masters Tournament for WHFB was a Chaos Dwarf Army. Considering armies such as orcs and Ogres were not present in that field of 17 players the Chaos Dwarves are definitelya competitive army despite the smallness of their list and 11 magic items of which 3 can only be chosen by a lord (but damned good). Oh and we have monstrous mounts too, not to mention arguably the best fast cavalry in the game (4+ save people!).

Play Chaos Dwarves, you won't regret the choice.

Elves put out good firepower and have enough elite units to hit hard in CC. Dark and High elves put out bolt throwers and lots of arrow shots.

i suggest skaven. they are massive and amazingly fun to play. lots of effective ranged
units like you wanted.

warp lightening cannon
Jezzails
gattling gun
warpfire thrower.

throw in some slaves to buy your ranged units time to run away , reposition and fire again !
or support them with rat ogre, poison globe , censor bearer to finish off all those
+1 , +2 armor save opponents.

best part about skaven is " oh no my units are in CC now what. no worries, we'll shoot the units in CC! "
never miss out the opportunity to pewpew!

Oh gawd I wish imperial guard could do that!

That being said, I'll still give you a 0 if you bring more than 5 eldar skimmers. Don't be that guy.
