Just pondering the viability of casting up my asteroids. Would anyone be interested in them? If so, what would you consider a fair price? They are done to match the tokens, and are on token shaped bases.

Unassembled?
Assembled, painted and varnished?

Also, would you consider a kickstarter with a gaming mat and a set of asteroids? Again, if yes, what would you consider a fair price?

I appreciate this isn't exactly market research, but I figure if no one here is interested, I doubt anyone else would be.

I should add, the mat would NOT have a logo emblazoned on it.

If they came with bases and stands, i'd buy a set. I can paint them, but given the market is pre paints. I think i would offer them painted

I would certainly be interested in a mat with pre-done asteroids. I'd use established mats in the market as a start, figure the cost of the asteroids and add some for possible profit, and a slight bit extra for compliations that will probably happen.

If you can't match mats with what is already out there, I'd leave that to those already established and just do the Roids.

I would definitely buy a set of those asteroids. I think if you were to go the kickstarter route it would be wise to have separate mat and asteroid levels as well as the all in one option.

I think X-wing has been established enough that many people will have a play surface already and you wouldn't want to lose out on asteroid purchases by only offering a combined option.

IMO, I think you are better off focusing on the asteroids first. The mats and asteroids have very different production and shipping characteristics. I think that you have a unique product for the asteroids. I think there are a lot of competing products for the mats.

I like both as well, I have been a little too vocal in another thread about logos on the mats. I do think if your using the Hubble images that if you kickstarter it you should somehow give back to the scientific community that these came from. Could just be a x amount donation to some astronomical group or something along those lines.

I like them, I definitely like the shaped bases and I don't currently have a mat so I'd buy both

However, I'd personally not use kickstarter because of the chunk they take, though obviously that's the cost of the benefits they provide too

I think you could hand cast the asteroids and sell them via an ebay store, painted and unpainted without the hassle of a kickstarter.

I think they look great and would be interested if you do cast them up.

I would be interesting in purchasing those, provided they came with the bases/stands and were pre-painted.

They look very cool, my main issue is that they would make playing the game more difficult as you would have to remove them whenever a ship flew onto them. If the stands were easily removed from the bases so a ship could be placed over it, and the bases were the exact official dimensions, I would consider buying such a product.

I'd want to magnetize the bases to the stands for exactly that reason

yeah,
Do it yours are by far the best X-wing asteroids I've seen.
This is your competition... http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/590978.page
Spoiler:

You can't fail!

You could sell asteroids unpainted including the games of war bases for around about £20-£25
I was thinking about coping your tutorial but at £20 I'd buy a set.

Painted that jumps to about £30-£40 as they are best on the market.

If your making a new set before casting you should make them smaller, so that they match the artwork size as opposed to the token size.
If they were 30% smaller than the base, they would be more stable, and allow for minor asteroid overlaps without the need for asteroid removal.
And save on resin.

You should post a photo of your asteroids ontop of FFG tokens.
to re-enforce how good the are for the game and how easy it is to just lift the 3d asteroid from the table and leave the token for overlaps.

Oh and before silicone molding, drill the flight stem hole prior to molding.
that way your cast minis will have the hole, I wish I'd done that in my project, drilling all these holes in wrecks is annoying the gak of of me!

Panic...

The advantage of trying a kickstarter is that you might be able to hit a wider audience, but you'd have to pay amazon and kickstarter a %age for fees, if you hit your goal.

I know this is for X-Wing, but you might get some Battlefleet Gothic players interested as well, (I have no idea what the size of the asteroids they'd want or how to play it, but they do use planets and asteroids.)

If you kickstart, I wouldn't magnetize them yourself. You'd be having to deal with sending magnetized stuff all over the world, and that would be a huge mess. You might want to make the models so that the person has that option to modify it for magnets at home...it's up to you.

Looks like I'll have to do some maths, and test casts and work something up!
