The biggest strength of the Freikorps is, perhaps, the fact that they are very adaptable. So often the strategy for them will come down to whatever is most effective against your opponent.
If you are up against an enemy with strong ranged attacks, you can try and engage them with your Freikorpsmenn and tie them up. If you are up against melee attackers, you can stay back and shoot. The Strong Arm is really a great example of this - from one round to the next he can shift his focus from being a melee monster, to a super accurate ranged attacker, to a dangerous tank.
The one thing I have found is that they are a crew that benefits from having a strong center of operations. Both Von Schill and the Steam Trunk give out some nice benefits to nearby models, and can really make even your minions very difficult to take out. (As they can survive via Hard to Kill, and then use the Steam Trunk to heal back up.)
This isn't to say you don't still want to be sending out models to engage the enemy and work on schemes and such, but it can be very beneficial to having Von Schill as a central point to spread out from and retreat to. Especially since you are protected against most Area of Effect attacks. This also gives a good place for the Librarian to operate from and keep your crew healthy - or, if an enemy strays into range, to unload into with Furious Casting.
I'd also recommend reversing your plans for the Trappers and the Strongarm suit. The Trappers with their range and triggers are great for focusing fire on key targets. A Focused Attack with Critical Strike will put the hurt on just about anything. Meanwhile, the Strongarm certainly *can* go toe to toe with other tough models - but those are also the models most capable of taking him out himself. Whereas if he goes hunting weaker models, he can usually tear through them with little fear of retaliation.
But, again, I think the most important thing is to not get too locked into any one plan of action. If a big enemy model has gotten to your own vulnerable models, you certainly shouldn't hesitate to send in the Strongarm against it. If your enemy has large damaging auras that your Suits don't protect you from, it is probably wise to spread out more than normal. Etc.
Few crews can re-adjust their strategy on the fly as well as Von Schill's, so making sure to remain adaptable is often their key to success.
