I could not decide between Thousand Sons and Necrons and though, hey with the new allies system (which wasn't a thing last time I played/collected) why not both? Any feedback and ideas would be great.

My fluff (after quite a lot of reading... but still not enough) is as such:

Ahriman has recently found an interest in the ancient Necrons who, like is own brothers but for completely different reasons, are also entombed within a shell of armour with no soul. He desires to understand the nature of their transformation more completely and hopes to potentially learn more of the wildly powerful C'tan in the process.

His extensive research of the Necrons has led to a fascination with the Crypteks; their own mastery of knowledge and how they utilise sciences to manipulate the universe without the power of the warp. In particular, the infamous Illuminor Szeras has caught Ahriman's attention due to the Cryptek's own fascination with acquiring knowledge and the use of battle as a means simply to achieve that (along with new research specimens).

We also know that Ahriman has been tirelessly searching for entrance to the Black Library, the hidden Eldar repository of all Chaos knowledge. He has tasted success but ultimately failed so far. Strangely, Szeras also desires to learn from the Eldar above all other races.

Knowing that coincidences are the explanations of those who lack the power to understand otherwise, he understands that a plot has already been set in motion. Being the master of sorcery, influence and manipulation that he is, he eventually tracks down Illuminor Szeras and proves that he can offer knowledge to the megalomaniac that no one else can.

A fragile pact is wrought between the two peculiarly similar forces (once Szeras has convinced/blackmailed a Necron Lord or two into joining him) and they begin their quest for knowledge with multiple, devastating attacks on Eldar craftworlds which could hold the key to what Ahriman ultimately desires.

The combination of psychic ability and technological prowess has proven to be an immensely potent device and continues to grant the crazed Cryptek with fresh test subjects whilst once again bringing Ahriman closer to the Black Library itself.

but the Necrons hate psykers. They might gang up occasionally for a certain situations but they have a burning passion worse than hate for psykers the warp and all sorcerery. They lost their empire, their flesh because of psykers.

So Arhiman wants to get into the webway and the black library. but once there he wants to read it, consume it's power.
The Necrons want to get into the webway and the black library. but once there they want to destroy it forever, deny that power from existing in the galaxy.

Given no other motivation, Necrons would exterminate Arhiman because of the threat he possesses should he get the power he desires.

This is true and unfortunate because it destroys Aims vision and narrative. Bummer....how can we make this work?

Perhaps Ahriman has discovered a small tomb world force as it awakens before they can get in contact with other Necrons and learn who Ahriman is. He convinces them to join him on a quest to destroy the Black Library, but he will ultimately turn on them. To communicate this narrative you can have him use the necrons as a vanguard, letting them take the casualties.

Perhaps your Overlord is a pragmatist and plans to turn on and murder Ahriman as soon as he gets them into the library?

The Necrons know they can't best Eldar psi-tech, after all, and the Black Library is hidden by the Eldar's best psi-techs.

Haha, I knew there had to be a flaw!

OK so, as said, the pact would be fragile. Obviously it will have to be VERY fragile lol. Changer of Ways and Furyou both raise good solutions.

I like the idea of both forces being driven solely by their own ambitions. Let's say that they both fully intend to destroy one another once they have achieved their short term goal but they have deemed working together acceptable in the mean time as they know it will greatly increase their chance of success. Both parties believe they are using one another (Ahriman wants the Necron's ancient knowledge of Eldar tech and the Necrons need him and his sorcerer-brothers to overcome the psychic defenses which they can not) but in reality it is once again Tzeench who is using them all.

Necrons and Chaos don't work together.

Your best bet is to either pretend the Necrons are actually some kind of Chaos automaton or say the CSM have all been mindshackled.

Yeah... warp based creatures and followers of chaos are on the vaporize at first encounter list for Necrons. Right alongside Humans, Tau, Orks, Eldar, Tyranids, some other Necrons and anything else that moves.

Joking aside, the warp/psychics/magic is pretty much the antithesis of everything Necron. The Necrons have tech specifically designed to block out the warp and prevent any kind of chaos nonsense.

Not on the board though.

And that's fair enough from a purist point of view, however, the the allies matrix lists Necrons and Chaos Marines as 'allies of convenience' and I am simply trying to create a semi-plausible scenario in which that could occur.

If I'm wrong on that too, correct me - I still have much to learn.

Honestly I do not think this is true. Necrons have not really shown any racial wide hatred of psykers.
We also don't know if they know of the Black Library, we have no real reason to believe any of them do, let alone these specific Necrons, and while they may not wish for Ahriman to become a god, if they even care, he has no need to reveal his motivation to them.

Yeah, there's not really any fluff behind this hatred of psykers you guys are talking about.

The Necron hatred of Psykers comes from getting their backsides kicked during the War in Heaven.

It also stems from the fact that C'tan are basically allergic to the Warp. Back when they were still in charge, they directed the Necrons to build Pylons that calmed the warp, with the implication being that the idea was to expand this across the entire galaxy, and thus assassinate the Chaos Gods and all the Daemons, returning the Warp to its pre-mortal placid state.

However, it's never been explicitly state that the Necrons themselves hate warpcraft or psykers. Just that they really, really suck at it.

Necrons were winning the War in Heaven, besting the Old Ones and only being forced to retreat from the Eldar after sustaining great damage shattering the C'tan.

Old fluff indeed. More relevant fluff has the C'tan unlocking the Webway, which is half warp, feeding on Souls, and even has one fighting Cypher within the Warp itself.

Yes, so there's no real apparent Necron racial hatred of psykers. Their enemies during the War in Heaven just so happened to be psykers.
