Yeah I asked a few other folks and they said the same thing. I'm gonna stick with the bio on 1 side and the stats on the other. But, it looks like there's only gonna be room for 6 heroes, so I'll have to pick 6 of them and we can always do the others in a hero pack. So that'll end up being 2 hero packs instead of 1.

Did some updates to the cards. I decided to add a border to the hero cards, I think it makes em look nicer. And I finished the first batch of Encounter Cards. They'll be color coded, green for minions, yellow for fiends and red for bosses. I'll be doing loot cards in a similar way, but those will be gray for common items, green for uncommon, blue for rare and purple for epic

As long as the basic 6 heroes can represent a decent range of gameplay then I can see 6 being pretty good. After all, Zombicide had 6 survivors and it was fine.

I like the cards, the art is good, the graphic design is clean, but thematic. You're working hard, and it shows!

I know you've cut down the attributes to 5, but I'm wondering: Does speed need to be in there? I'm just thinking if every hero is a human then would Speed differences really matter that much when it comes down to the main rules? Maybe so, I haven't seen rules, but I was just thinking if you wanted to streamline the stats even further you might be able to axe the whole Speed factor. I know boardgamers sometimes appreciate simplicity moreso than RPGers or minis gamers, so if this is a boxed product then less stats might help the cause.

I can see the Shadows Of Brimstone crowd being into this game. It did very well via Kickstarter, so even a fraction of that audience would bode well for you.

There were 9 stats originally Speed I think will be needed, that's how many spaces you can move. Stamina is how many actions you get, so with a 4 for stamina you could move up to your speed then shoot 3 times, or move, shoot, run, then drink some snake oil.

I never played zombicide but I saw some videos and the game play turns out to be kind of similar. You draw encounter cards to see what spawns and comes after the heroes. There will be set spawn points that are sinkholes with beasts crawling out of em. Then there's a primary objective, like you have to kill a specific beast that's tearing up the town, or find some artifact that a prospector hid in the stables, then keep the beasts from getting to it. It's kind of like a co-op skirmish game with some RPG elements.

I was also planning to add "gangfight mode" to the game, where 2 players can play against each other with 1 guy playing a few heroes and the other playing beasts (or rival heroes) .. kinda like skirmish-lite. That will depend on how much space I have in the rulebook. Worst case I can easily make those rules be a PDF download.

Forgot to say, if anyone wants to check out the current rules I have a plain text google doc going here. it’s not pretty at all, but there’s some fluff and stuff in there along with the rules, and I’m still doing some tweaks to it. I’ll be putting together the preview rulebook in the next couple of weeks, so it will look nicer and have diagrams and all. I want to have that in place for the Kickstarter, but I need to get all of the cards done first so I can get the prototype stuff all printed up for the video, it will probably take 2-3 weeks to get the printing all done.

Also planning to build a basic web page and do a more official announcement for the game probably around the end of next week or so

I should have the preliminary loot cards finished up tonight. I decided to make a change to the basic weapons and remove the +1 combat that they all have. That was from an earlier version where you were supposed to add your combat skill to the combat of the weapon to see how many dice you can roll, but now it just seems like extra unnecessary math. Since I increased the amount of attribute points a hero has they don’t really need the weapon bonus as much. Special weapons will have some bonuses though, but the basic ones will just be range & damage.

I also decided to change the way you get loot, instead of just drawing a card when you kill something, it will drop a loot token in the space where it died. So you’ll have to walk up to it and use a loot action to pick it up. Then you can draw your card and get your loot. It seemed weird shooting a monster from clear across the board, then having a rifle suddenly poof into existence in your hands. So a Fiend / yellow card monster will drop 1 loot token, and Boss / Red card will drop 2. Any Hero can pick up loot when they find it, and you can still use an item to trade and swap items around between heroes.

And here's the loot cards Still subject to change, but what I'm going with for the prototype cards. I stole the images off of Google for now, I'll be getting artwork done for each one in the end, but I probably won't get any of that till next month. But these will be good enough for the playtest and how to play video.

The gray cards are common items.. most of them will be duplicates and there will be 40 of them in the 64-card deck. Green is uncommon, there will just be a few duplicates of those. Blue is rare and purple is infamous. Some Hero or Monster packs might get an occasional duplicate of a blue card, but the purples are all unique.

Little update.. almost done the new website

http://gangfightgames.dreamhosters.com/badlands/

That's a temporary URL. I'll be switching my whole site over to that format soon, probably after the holidays. I'll probably wait till Friday or Monday to switch my domain names over since it will take some time for the DNS to catch up and the online store URLs to get switched around.

So, I just got an email from the game crafter that my prototype parts are on the way. It should be here next week. I’m just going to be using that to make a how to play video for the campaign, the final parts will be printed on nice heavy duty cardstock the normal way and come in a nice big box, not using game crafter I’ll be making an official announcement for the game around the web next week, I’m still waiting for my new web host to get my domain name transferred over and everything up and running, don't want people to go to the site and have it not be working.

I’m having the loot item art done now (the photos above were just for the prototype) and more monsters done too. I have all my printer quotes and shipping prices lined up. I’ll be going with a $25,000 funding goal. There will just be 2 pledge levels, 1 for $55 for US backers, and another for $75 for the rest of the world. Retail price will be around $65 US. Free shipping for the US, and $10 off shipping for ROW, with the price factored into the pledge already so there’s no extra charges later. The game is going to weigh around 3 pounds, so that’s going to cost me $10 to ship to the US and $30 for ROW. Stretch goals will be around $7-8000 each and will feature add-on packs for new monsters plus bonus heroes and beasts and extra loot and stuff like that, that will get added into the core game. So the more goals we hit the bigger and better the main game will get, plus if you want more monsters to kill and new loot you can add on any of the monster packs we unlock. The monster packs are going to probably be $15 each for US and $20 for ROW.

Here’s a list of everything that’s gonna be included

Bad Lands: Curse of the Skinwalker Core Game
8 Heroes
4 Bosses: 1 Alpha Skinwalker Wolf, 1 Alpha Skinwalker Bear, 1 Alpha Skinwalker Bat, 1 Alpha Skinwalker Cat
8 Fiends: 2 Skinwalker Wolves, 2 Skinwalker Bears, 2 Skinwalker Bats, 2 Skinwalker Cats
16 Minions: 4 chupacabras, 4 jackalopes, 4 Montocks, 4 Cactus Cats
6 Board Tiles
36 Pawn bases
8 Hero Cards
28 Encounter cards
64 Loot Cards (32 Common, 19 Uncommon, 8 Rare, 4 Infamous, 1 Legendary)
Rulebook
6 D6’s

Villain Packs - 1 Boss, 2 Fiends, 3 Minions, 6 bases, 6 Encounter Cards, 10 new Loot Cards (4 Common, 3 Uncommon, 2 Rare, 1 Infamous)

Bulls: Alpha Skinwalker Bison, 2 Skinwalker Bulls, 3 Hodags
Rats: Alpha Skinwalker Rat, 2 Skinwalker Rats, 3 Oomajinakoos (big skinless rat)
Lizards: Alpha Skinwalker Croc, 2 Skinwalker Snakes, 3 Armadillodons
Insects: Alpha Skinwalker Moth (the mothman), 2 Skinwalker Locusts, 3 Rockworms
Wolves: Alpha Skinwalker Wolf, 2 Skinwalker Wolves, 3 Chupacabras (alt art)

Bats: Alpha Skinwalker Bat, 2 Skinwalker Bats, 3 Montocks (alt art)
Cats: Alpha Skinwalker Cat, 2 Skinwalker Cats, 3 Cactus Cats (alt art)

Some of the bonus monsters planned will be Sasquach, Barrens Devil (the jersey devil, but westernified), The Tall Man, Rugaroo, Sheepsquach, Wampus Beast and more

Sounds like the plan is coming together!

Will there be opportunities to buy the Blackwater Gulch metal minis as add-ons to the Bad Lands project? I'm thinking that nothing sells on Kickstarter quite like a minis game, so even though the boxed game is standees, at least giving the audience a shot at picking up some actual minis might boost your totals.

yep

I got the prototype stuff in the mail yesterday. Looks good but I can see what Catyrpelius meant about game crafter quality. But it will be good enough for some photos and a quick video.

I don't know about adding the minis to the campaign. I thought about it, but since they're already available I was thinking if folks want them they can just go order them rather than waiting months for the board game to get finished. plus I don't know if KS will normally allow that. I could always add them into the pledge manager though. I'll have to think about it more

Game Crafter is great for prototypes, review copies and print and plays... It's not something I'd buy as a consumer though.

When Battlefront did their Dust Tactics Operation Babylon KS they pretty much threw open the floodgates to all of the products they had in print at the time. I'm guessing that was an administrative nightmare for them, but since the Blackwater Gulch universe is still comparably small, then it would seem more feasible there. I didn't know if Game Salute would have issues with offering it via KS though, not sure how those agreements work.

Perhaps if you reach your funding goal, you could open up gangs, and maybe even BWG as addons for backers. Great way to cross promote. I know you've done so much work and want to get it going, but it might be worth being prepared with whatever you need to slot in the outlaws per your original drafts so the minis can work, too. I can already see it being asked in comments..

It's late here. Sorry if I'm not coherent..

Yep that’s the plan actually Honestly I’m not expecting it to rake in the dough, it’s a new game from a company that till now just made miniatures really. And, it’s not going to the kind of campaign promising tons of free stuff, and the art is only going to be half done since I need the game to fund to finish it. it’s a straight up old fashioned funding campaign What I planned to do is instead of offering freebie things, each stretch goal would add something new to the core boxes game, like new heroes or monsters.

But yeah, I have those 8 monster packs planned, and if we do start hitting all kinds of goals I also have plans to do the gang packs in the same format.. there’s 8 BWG gangs now, 9 if we add in the Traveling Zarconis circus gang. Plus I can do a couple packs of hired guns too.

But also I kind of want to have a finite amount of goals, so that I can stay focused and not get overwhelmed promising all kinds of stuff that ends up just delaying things. I think I’d rather do a couple of small and focused campaigns rather than one huge one that spirals out of control. In a perfect world I’d make enough off the first campaign to be able to go straight to retail with future stuff

I do have plans for a 2nd and 3rd boxed games too. They’ll be separate stand-along games, but fully compatible. The 2nd one will have an undead theme and the 3rd will be more about mines and stuff with Tommyknockers (goblinses) as the main enemy. But right now those are just ideas in my head and will take a long time to develop, so I don’t think it would be good to add them to the campaign with a stretch goal saying “yeah, zombies are next” and no art or anything else to show. Lots of stuff in my head, but I just need to get the game funded first and then take it from there

What?!?
You mean you would rather prepare well, have well-defined goals, and consistently attempt to under-promise & over-deliver?!?
I don't think KS works like that!
The next thing you'll tell me is that you plan to deliver everything you have promised on-time and in 1 wave.

So now that I’m seeing the game in the flesh, I think I’m going to have to update the art for cardstock pawns. They’re all kind of a parchmenty color for the background, like the pic in the rulebook now. Since the encounter cards are color coded, I figured the pawns should also be too.. so the minions will have a green tint, fiends a yellow tint, etc. Just so you’ll be able to tell them apart better on the board. I also thought about adding the basic stats for villains on the back of their pawn, right now it’s the same pic on both sides. I thought it would be handy so you could see the stats at a glance, but the text would end up being pretty small and tough to read across the board. The pawns are only 1.75” tall.

I’ve been playing a few solo test games, it’s a lot more fun with real pieces and cards I want to get that how to play video done, but I’ve been sick and I’ll sound like a frog. So that will have to wait another week or so. One thing I’m noticing though is the half-sized loot cards are kind of a pain to shuffle. They just kinda flop all over the place and I end up just mixing them all together. I wanted them small to keep costs down and also let you put them on top of your hero card to show it’s equipped, bigger cards just take up too much space. But what I might do is have the cards enlarged for a stretch goal, then they can have nice big art and larger text that’s easier to read.

I’m also still torn on the board formats. Right now I’m sticking with 10” tiles with a 8x8 grid of 1.25” squares, since that’s the perfect size for the 30mm bases for the minis. I’m still kind of wondering if I should switch back to 1’ squares, since that’s just more common. Then I could either drop the tile size down to 8”, or keep it 10 and add extra dirt/road space all around. Either size works fine for the pawns, I used the bigger squares just because of the minis. I want them to fit, but the bases are just a teeny bit bigger and it didn't bother me in any of my test games, but I dunno how other folks will feel about it. Maybe I’ll do a poll during the campaign to see what format the backers like best.

I have so many projects I'm in the middle of now that are on the home stretch that, with Bad Lands possibly starting soon, I'm likely to be an admirer from afar rather than a backer. That said, I'm somewhat OCD. Big bases on small squares would irritate me. It would be something like painting outside the lines, if you know what I mean.

Yeah I'm the same way, that's why I made the spaces 1.25". I could always pull a GW and change my base sizes, I'll make them 23.5mm so no one can copy me! I'll most likely leave the tiles as is, seems balanced and fun enough with 8x8 spaces. Another thing I'm still torn on is having separate tiles or switching to a quad or 6-fold board. I like the flexibility of separate tiles for building your own maps... but don't like when the tiles slide around in the middle of a game (minor peeve) and also I'm thinking if it's supposed to take place in a town, the buildings wouldn't magically reposition themselves overnight. Having the boards all connected in a big fold out board is slightly more expensive, but not enough to drive up the cost of the game really.

Anyway, got some of the preliminary loot card item pics. These are just a few common items so far. They'll also be much smaller on the cards, maybe 1" wide max.

Boardgamers are so used to modular tiles now that I doubt you would have much pushback against keeping them individual. Unless they are mega-thin, which would be bad. It seems everyone that is annoyed by moving tiles will just get some plexi and be cool with that. The whole fold-out board thing might actually be weirder & more noticeable than just doing the tiles.

Got the website all updated now. I added galleries for the heroes and villains, and I'll be updating the artwork there as I get new stuff and/or colorized pics

http://www.gangfightgames.com/badlands/

Planning to make the how to play video this weekend, but that will take some time to do all the editing and stuff. Wish I could find someone to play me a creepy song on a banjo for background music

Now that the site is done though I'm gonna start posting news all around the web over the weekend.

Friday nights tend to be busy for people, so you may be better off saving it for a Tuesday night, or mid-week so you aren't competing with peoples' plans.

Yeah now I was thinking of doing it Feb 1 - Mar 1, exactly 4 weeks.. and I read before that sundays are usually good days since lots of folks are online shopping and stuff then, and it'll also be good for Monday morning when folks are at work hardly working and checking out the internet instead.
