So I've been reading a bit (more) about Fantasy lores - I'm a 40k player - and came across Nagash.... seems to be a pretty central figure in several factions history. Not to mention seemingly pretty evil from my initial research.
But one thing I'm not quite grasping.... is his power level. On a 40k scale, is it something along the lines of a Primarch or the Emperor himself?

It's hard to scale the two for a real clear comparison. After all, even the Fantasy Emperor is (until quite recently) just a man, and a pretty fallible one at that. That said, you can make a case that Nagash is the 1st or 2nd most important figure in the Warhammer Fantasy lore, challenged only by Sigmar. Without him, the undead simply do not exist, both Vampires and Tomb Kings.

Now as far as his actual power, he would definitely count as an insanely high level psyker. His great spell that was thwarted by the Skaven puppet Alcadizzar would have killed everything in the world and raise it as undead slaved to his will. He has had enough power to kill a (weakened) god and consume its power.

Given that he's come back from being killed multiple times I would say his recent incarnation is very close to being on the Emperor's level. Not quite but close. Possibly on par once he manages to rid himself of the Curse of Anaerion and then is able to bind the Wind of Death into himself. In the context of the Primarchs, given his vast sorcerous might, I think he'd only be matched by those with prodigious psychic abilities like Magnus or souped up like crazy such as Chaos-empowered Horus. But yeah he's definitely one of the few characters that pose a real direct threat to the Chaos Gods.

I hear lots of people say Franz isn't a threat, I disagree greatly in this, sure he won't "smite" a chaos god with magical powers the way nagash will, but he rallys men to him, he is able to bolster them, strengthen them, give them hope. These things are usually far greater adversaries of chaos than pure power.

also, other primarchs that might be able to combat nagash ATM- Russ, he don't give no dam about fancy magics, sanguinius, and angorn,

Wait wait.... could anyone give me a (concise) version of Nagash's story? I'm a BIT confused about the order of stuff that's happened and why/how he happens to rival the Chaos gods. I mean... isn't he a mortal?

The Fallen Realm of Umbar

Wall of Text and End Times spoilers below:
Spoiler:

Nagash is born

Nagash being the first born of the king of Khemri is offered to the mortuary cult

Becomes High Priest of the Khemrian mortuary cult

Covets his younger brother's throne

Learns Dark Magic from captured Druchi

Creates Necromancy

Kill his younger brother

Takes that gak for himself

Creates the Nine Books of Nagash, the Elixir of Damnation and The Black Pyramid

Is crushed by Nehekarra united under Alcadizzar the Great

Retreats to his fortress of Nagashizzar to the north

Vampires are created by Neferata and her fellows during this time.

Vampires flee Lahmia after being defeated by Nehekarra

Vampires become Nagash's Generals

Tries to conquer Nehekarra, Vampires (except the W'Soran's line), curses them to burn in the rays of the sun.

Retreats to Nagashizzar with a captured Alcadizzar

Prepares the Great Ritual to turn the world into an undead kingdom

The Skaven Council of Thirteen free Alcadizzar and arm him with the fell blade

Nagash is destroyed entirely except for one of his hands (his right I think)

Forms again in the time of Sigmar, raises the Chaos Lord Krell to be his champion.

Gets punked by Sigmar, vampires and other undead are now forever weakened by the sign of the Heldenhammer as a result

Nagash's crown is found in Strigos by Ushoran

Strigos eventually crushed by a WAAAGH of either W'Soran or Neferata's design (the novel series isn't finished yet)

Crown is lost for the next few thousand years eventually found by Azhag the Slaughterer

Remains a voice of the wind of Shysh that grows slightly stronger each passing year

Mannfred von Carstein, reborn from his defeat at Hel Fenn plans a great ritual that would restore Nagash to full power and bind him to Mannfred's will

This was planned ahead of time by Nagash's most trusted Lieutenant, Arkhan the Black, Nagash restored to full power with his own will, but is afflicted by the curse of Aenarion

Unable to draw the the wind of death from the vortex of Ulthuan into himself due to being weakened by Khaine, instead grounds it into the lands of Sylvania

Restores to life Vlad von Carstein to act as one of his Mortarchs, as well as securing the services of many notable individuals, including what is probably the remnants of Constant Drachenfels

Finally conquers Nehekarra and in the process levels the city of Khemri, defeats Settra the Imperishable, kills and consumes the god of the underworld Usirian, thus becoming a god himself as well as draining the ambient magic stored by his Black Pyramid over the past millennia, which allows him to absorb the wind of death into himself.

Tyrion after having drawn the widowmaker is defeated by Malekith and killed, thus permanently lifting the curse of Aenarion making Nagash probably the single most dangerous individual in the warhammer world.

Couple questions:

1. The Black Pyramid is the one made out of pure warpstone or something and also happens to be the biggest pyramid ever (which is a... big feat right? considering how many pyramids they have)?
2. He got beaten by Sigmar but happens to be.... strong as a Chaos god?
3. What exactly is the curse of Aenarion? It seems to be something that is really holding Nagash back.
4. I thought the Skaven served Nagash, why did they free Alcadizzar and give him a cool sword?

And thanks for the brief description. It actually does help with the understanding.

Not made out of warpstone, but it attracts and stores the winds of magic for later use by it's creator and is also the largest pyramid in Nehekarra
2. He got beaten by Sigmar but happens to be.... strong as a Chaos god? Before the ritual that brought him back for the end times, every time he was brought back, he was weaker than the previous time, and it doesn't help that vampires don't normally make the most trustworthy allies. He's not as strong as a chaos god, not yet at least, but he is still a god, even if at the lower end of the power of gods in fantasy
3. What exactly is the curse of Aenarion? It seems to be something that is really holding Nagash back.Ever since Aenarion drew the Widowmaker, the sword of Khaine, his entire bloodline was cursed with visions of madness, insanity or similar (teclis is a cripple pretty much for example) Although after the events of End Times: Khaine it no longer afflicts Nagash (or any of Aenarion's bloodline), Nagash was affected because the ritual that brought back Nagash used a descendant of Aenarion
4. I thought the Skaven served Nagash, why did they free Alcadizzar and give him a cool sword?Nagashizzar is made of warpstone for the most part, and we all know the skaven....

And thanks for the brief description. It actually does help with the understanding.

2) Sigmar wasn't just an ordinary human, he eventually became a god.

4) The Skaven realized that Nagash couldn't be allowed to succeed in his mission. http://whfb.lexicanum.com/wiki/Nagash So they gave Alcadizzar a blade made of pure Warpstone(the Fellblade). He was able to kill Nagash with their aid, although he later died from the experience.
