Played another test game last night with the venerable skaven from the IOB starter - the one with the warlord loaded out with the halberd sticking out 45 degrees right, and the chopper 45 left.

It turns out we play at least one combat wrong, because the warlord made chopper attacks when he wasn't in range. Picking Targets says "...an enemy model...must be in range of the attacking weapon...".

None of the enemy models were within 1", so it shouldn't have been able to attack.

Moral of the story for us is that facing matters.

Also, when you have models like the warlord, whose weapons protrude significantly from the base, movement matters too. If you turn this bad boy, the tip of his halberd is moving a loong way, so if you play by the vanilla rules, you'd probably want to be fair to your opponent and not count the "pivot distance" as zero.

Your looking into this far too much.....if the model is in attack range its in attack range not just is the weapon on the model in attack range this is silly and assumes that we assume that the models are statues and do not move, How boring!

You might be right, but we want to play by the rules as written for a while to try to understand how the rules-as-written work in practice. I have no problems with other folks doing there own thing and creating their own rules for the way they want to play.

Don't get me wrong; I'm sympathic to the idea of measuring from the base, doing LOS ala WMH, etc, etc, but we'll decide how we want to process over time.

Don't try to read into this game like you would with Warmachine. The rules reference the range, from the model, of the weapon. You can measure from any point on the model for any reason. You don't have to measure from the modeled weapon to the target, just from somewhere on the model to the target.
