Oh, never mind then, must have mis-read. I thought you were a Catholic calling the pope a heretic. A non-Catholic calling the pope a heretic is just fine.

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices.

Didn't the Vatican drop the doctrine of papal infallibility long ago?

A few apologies isn't going to change the world immediately but if it makes even a few haters consider their stance it already helps. Some of them need to forgive themself for having exactly the feelings they hate after all. Men in particular are quick to attack gays (verbally at least) just so no one can accuse them of having any leaning in that direction. Seen it myself, an old mate used to be pretty vocal on the subject. Now with a wife and three kids he's got nothing to prove. ;-)

2.2 billion people are Christian, with the largest group being Catholic.

You don't have to agree with other people's beliefs, but there is no need to be rude or disrespectful.

At this point I'd be rather interested how many of those 2.2 billion people have read a bible and still give any feths what the pope has to say. It wouldn't surprise me if there's more non-Christians who pay attention to him than Christians.

Really not sure where you were trying to go with this but Pope Francis is Argentinian, he was never in the Hitler Youth

If you are referring to the previous pope (Benedict), then that is in incredibly bad taste considering that his father was vocally anti-nazi and his cousin was murdered by the Nazis in their Eugenics program. It was required by law that all young people in Germany join the Hitler Youth, so Benedict did join but was apparently a very reluctant member, rarely going to meetings etc.

Aye, my Father-in-Law was in Hitler Youth too, because he had to be. It's not like little kids can do much about it if they're forced to join. He also hated it - he was a bit of a nerd who liked reading and bird watching, and all the military stuff was scary and too physical for him anyway.

He's a lovely guy, spent years working as a lawyer for poor people.

Aye, already got some pointers on it. It also seems it's not very common to claim such a thing even if they can. Consider the matter explained and dropped as far as this thread goes. :-)

Forget that mate, there are people in this thread talking about the Pope as heretical. It seems we never actually left the Reformation...

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

The church as a whole has a, to put it gently, mixed record of anti semitism.
http://www.shc.edu/theolibrary/resources/Timeline.htm

Also, pope benedict basically lived his entire life until the end of nazi germany in nazi germany... The church and nazi germany didn't get along too well, but hitler was catholic and last time i checked, gott mit uns was on a lot of belt buckles.

Also, I don't think his cousin being killed would have bothered benedict too much. The church's policies when he was pope caused a lot of death, and he didn't seem to be very troubled by it.

If it is wrong because it is causing real harm to people, then call them on the harm they cause. But if they are wrong on some abstract, meta-physical idea then it seems to me to be the height of hubris to say 'I have it right and you have it wrong therefore I am with God and you are a heretic'.

Forget tolerance. What's needed is humility.

Because people still mistakenly believe that dude speaks for the church. As long as people keep believing some dude in Rome speaks for the entirety of Christianity they're going to keep blaming Christianity for things that should be blamed on slowed individuals or subsets of people claiming to be Christians. Also all the suffering and heresy caused by the papacy over the centuries leaves me little respect for the Roman Catholic idea of apostolic succession.

It is an awkward situation. On the one hand, I have respect for anyone who has read the bible, read history and still follows the pope (which I don't think is anywhere near the supposed 1.2 billion Roman Catholics in the world). On the other hand, I personally do not respect the papacy and think it's a harmful institution, which can be misconstrued as not respecting the people who do follow it.

I'm all up for someone encouraging folk to think about whether they want to move with the times. The wider message that reaches the man on the street, is to maybe stop being a dick.
Now you can ignore it, disagree with it, or follow it to the letter.
But you're now aware he said it. He brought it to the public eye and mind. So that is a positive thing.

I don't there's that many people who don't realise Catholics have the Pope and Protestants don't.

And while I understand some measure of hostility towards the Pope and Catholic leadership at large for what have been very conservative and often basically wrongheaded stances on many issues, it's weird to single out just the Pope and Catholic leadership for that. Ultra-conservative social views are very consistent with religion in general. And not just various strains of Christianity either.

It is an awkward situation. On the one hand, I have respect for anyone who has read the bible, read history and still follows the pope (which I don't think is anywhere near the supposed 1.2 billion Roman Catholics in the world). It might be coloured by my experience. I'm married to a Catholic lady, but she probably pays less attention to the Pope than I do. But I've also got family friends who go back a long time, who are extremely well read, and they do follow the Pope. And when I say extremely well read, I mean she teaches religious studies at a college, and goes on the late night religious studies radio shows and all that stuff.

I guess other people with different experiences might see it differently. I do see the awkwardness you're getting at, but I haven't personally experienced it.

And why do that? What good does it do anyone, anywhere on this whole blue planet to discover that you, some guy on the internet, have denounced a religious figure? And not denounced because of some earthly thing he did to harm someone, but because of doctrine.

You've basically said 'my doctrine is different from there doctrine'. Well, yeah, that's why you belong to different religions. So go your own separate ways then. And maybe do it with enough humility and grace that you don't need to go about telling other people they're doing religion wrong by not being the same as you.
