[Write up by Matt, Pictures by Russel]

Prologue: I wish I had a chance to set up the scenario differently. It ended up as a static firefight. I hope the learning curve doesn't turn people off to the game. . .

Our second round of Disposable Heroes was again a learning experience.

Eric, Russel, & Jack took the Germans

Eddie, Mark, & Austin took the Russians.

The scenario was a platoon of FJ's and a PaK 40 held a central house and were surrounded by a larger force of Russians (4 rifle squads, HMG team, sniper, scouts, 2 T34 tanks). . .

The Germans also had a reserve force of a rifle platoon with Panzer III L rolling on to reinforce the FJ's in the house.

The game began with all units hidden and the Germans moving up from reserve. Most of turn one was cautiously played, with both side attempting to spot the enemy with little success. The German reinforcements surged on to the table in force from the Northwest quarter of the table.

Mark's squad in that sector couldn't resist and opened up on the advancing Landsers. The first unit caught unaware in the open was chewed up in an instant leaving shredded bodies in the street. Strangely enough this was almost the German command section. At one point Mark, playing as a Russian, pretty much refused to let the Germans place their command squad in the open!

The fight for the house opened up on Turn three where Mark pushed out the Russian scouts into snap fire range (12 inches) of the fortified house. The FJ's opened fire. Clipping two and from there everyone started to open fire. Four Russian squads began pouring fire into the FJ position.

Turns three and four saw short range firefights break out between houses. With so many German MG's clumped in the house, no one wanted to risk leaving cover to make the charge (one of the flaws of the scenario). And with the high building cover value the chance of pinning enough of the Germans was slim (another flaw).

The second T34 raced up along the Western board edge, out of sight of the Pak40 in the house, but visible to the German Panzer III. Russell took a chance, acquired the target on his first roll, hit, and blew the treads off the vehicle. The tank crew, unnerved bailed out and cowered behind the tank.

Austin's sniper spent the mid-part of the game taking shots at the FJ's but missing each time (he'd find his range in the later turns)

The whole game was pretty much static. FJ's pulled back from the sandbags around the building as casualties began to mount. Russian squads in buildings were slowly chewed up by the relentless German fire. Russell fired at the trackless t34 and blew the iron beast sky high. The tank crew could do nothing but wring their hands and hope they were not noticed by the Commissar.

Only Austin made a move towards the fortified house. his four man squad raced out of the building and were cut down to two men. They hunkered down behind some rubble but could not get the guts to charge into the house. sustained fire killed another and chased them back into the building.

Ed's squads stayed put in cover and took a steady toll on the Germans, (Ed's ability to roll 1's became a deadly advantage!) the T34 remained hidden from the Pak and methodically sprayed buildings with MG fire.

By turn 5+ the FJ's had a squad & a few men left in the building. Jack's Germans had whittled Mark's Russians down to a single guy and then stormed the building and bayoneted him. But both sides were spent. Austin's sniper had found his range and put a bullet in the FJ Lt.'s head and finished off the staff sergeant.

We finished up the game knowing more about the rules.

Realizing that the GUTS score cannot be raised above the level of the original guts score means that instead of needing a 9 or 10 to fail (which reminds me, Mark rolled three "9"s and a "10" at one point!) most Russians would have to roll 7 or under from coming under standard rifle fire. . .

I hope we can try it again and remedy the scenario issues. . .

DH is a great game. The more you play the better it gets. I have never played a city fight before but it looks good.

I think the game is going to stick with the guys in the club, It's just a matter of playing until we have an idea of exactly what the rule set has to offer. If you (or anyone!) have any suggestions on senarios or setups you have found successful, please feel free to share. In fact, if anyone has anything to say about the system, I'd love to hear!

Thanks for reading.

Wow, This looks great.
Love the paint jobs on the models and great pictures from the battle reports.

is this 28mm? If so where did you get the models from?
Also how does this ruleset compare to Nuts!?

Thanks. The models are 28mm the Russians are mostly Crusaders, but some (the ones in greatcoats and the camo pattern) are from Bolt Action Miniatures.

The Germans were a mix of West wind (the Germans in great coats) the FJ's were Artizan & Foundry.

I got most of my figures from Old Glory 25's, War store, brigade games, and ebay.

No real idea. disposable heroes is pretty new to me, I chose it over Nuts! because it seemed to have a higher level of detail. The reviews I read of Nuts! were all positive and the system sounded fine (heck I might even pick up a copy to check it out) but out of the two DH appealed to me more. I also have the 40K rules that have been tweaked for WWII. . . The figures will pretty much work across any system we choose.

Yeah.
Im trying really really hard to find a 28mm ruleset for WW2. Nuts is by far on top of the list to try out, ive also heard nothing but good things about it, however after looking at this I cant help but wonder. Can you please post some links for me for the ruleset?

40k rules for WW2? Any chance you could post a link to me?

I really look forward to more BattleReports! Maybe it will help me make a decision on what ruleset.
