I am planning on starting a WHFB army. I usually play 40K, but I also want to open my options and play the WHFB folks at my local GW. I have been reading about the new rules coming soon. I just wanted to know if it's entirely a bad idea to start an army now? How much would it affect my knowledge, skill, etc. of the game if I were to jump on instead of waiting.

Do you already have an army in mind that you want to play? I would pick up the army book first. If you are set on an army then I don't think new rules will change that.

I think it could only affect your knowledge/skill level in a positive way to start now!

That said, I personally would be hesitant to start a VC army right now. When new rules come out, generally things are shifted so that the current "hotness" is no longer as viable... there have been rumors about changes to fear/terror, which VC rely on a lot, as well as changes to the magic phase, which is their bread and butter.

So I personally would be hesitant to start VC now... but I have also noticed a lot of VC armies for sale, so you may be able to get in cheaply. It's really about what you like... even if they're not as powerful in the next ruleset, they'll still be a good army, and well worth starting

I am sure VC will be one of the least affected. Aside from fear, which they won't change too drastically as it would much up muliple armies (daemons, Undead, Ogres) there isn't much that will affect them. As long as you stick to the basic stuff until the new rules come out then you should be ok.

VC will always play a similar style and you will always need a vampire, lots of skellies and zombies.

This is true (about VC playing a similar style) I was referring more to the "overall" power level of the army, with the magic phase (hopefully) being toned down a bit. If you like them, you should definitely go for 'em!

And if infantry get buffed as expected, vamps will only get stronger, with their ability to generate bigger and bigger infantry blocks for free. On the other side everybody wants fear to become less extreme vs non-ItP armies, so one of your nastier weapons (fear outnumber vs non-ItP) may get hurt some. Though frankly VC are such a competitive army that facing non-ItP armies is somewhat unlikely!

As you can see nobody can do much more than speculate at the changes. I don't think the overall playing style of any army should take a complete 180 turn, so I think the core thing to keep in mind is to pick an army that you can bring yourself to assemble, paint, and play with.

Doesn't matter if goblins are going to be the most powerful army if you hate the models and will have to suffer through painting hundreds of them...

Fixed

This is another thing to consider- horde armies take a lot more time to complete and paint! But they can be a lot of fun if you've got the stamina

Hmmm.. I think he actually means hate. If you hate the models, assembling, painting, and playing with them, then it doesn't matter how powerful they are, you are not going to have fun with them. At least that is how I read it.

Ah I do love painting and assembling, but sometimes I can get a little lazy. I noticed that skeletons wouldn't require much detail though. Can anyone give me a breakdown of these types of armies? e.g. which are horde armies or which are smaller elites, etc. Other armies I am interested in are empire, wood elves, and dark elves. I wouldn't want to run into an out-dated army such as the Dark Eldar for 40K.

That was my (clearly unsuccessful) attempt at a joke to indicate that even if you love the models, you'll still suffer through painting hundreds of them

That is funny. Sorry, I've never been accused of being a wise man. I can truly empathize with that too, seeing as none of my armies are completely done.

RITides version, just as valid. I love the Dwarf background and quite like a lot of the models, but after years, still haven't gotten a full 2250 painted...

Was about to post a new topic, so I hope this won't sidetrack too much.
In a similar vein, I wanted to ask the more experienced players what they do when a new rules book is released.

The obvious choices seem to be by the new edition c£35
Buy the new starter set c£50 and possibly a load of minis that need painting, selling or what ever.

Now both these choices are not good while I am simultaneously trying to build up a couple of armies and then other games systems and other hobbies- oh and bills that need paying and 3 breweries and a bookmaker to support

HELP!

Good question... I am currently leaning towards buying the starter set, hoping there's a mini-rulebook in there like the current one... we'll see when it comes out, though!

Within 15 minutes of the boxed set being released eBay's gonna be loaded with zillions of the accessories/rulebook and separate lots of sprues offered for a song (just like BoSP). I'll get my rulebook and templates then.

Until then..block paint a Marauder...dip the Marauder...block paint a Marauder...dip the Marauder...

Trouble is XYZ, the rule book will be required by players who will need the new rules.
Those sold by traders will be chased after by lots of people. Hopefully there will be some at reasonable Buy it Now prices.

Am still left wondering whether these updates are to fix broken rules, or a licence for GW to print money but that is another story!*

ie not intended to take the discussion off topic

Chibi...one of my very fav eBay GW sellers-"macpac51"-sold his BoSP packs (dice, templates, rulebooks) back when the boxed set was released for $10 USD @ buy it now with free shipping. When I bought mine the selection count said "Over 250 in stock" and he was just one!

I'm not worryin'...
