Public Service Announcement

Hello friends!

This missive is to let you know that for the time being, my 5 P&M blogs (Mantis Warriors, Bad Moon Orks, AdMech, Halloween themed Chaos and 30k EC) will have all their updates appearing on a single blog (my “Rebuilding the Mantis Warriors” blog… which will get a new name). Why? With my interests so scattered across multiple armies and terrain & the fact that I’m just not painting at the hundreds of figures a year rate that I used to… I’m not making enough quality posts to keep 5 different blogs going. I’ve got a few die-hard friends and supporters that still post… but not enough to build or maintain the community that has always been the strongpoint of my threads in the past.

If my circumstances change and I start painting enough to warrant re-opening one of the specialist threads, I’ll do so... they aren’t closed, just inactive. In the meantime, as of today (Feb 11th, 2017) I’ll be making all of my P&M posts (for all armies) on what has always been my “home” on DakkaDakka, my Mantis Warrior thread. I hope you’ll join me there for the latest updates!
Here’s the link:
Gitsplitta's Unified Painting Theory

Thanks!
Gits

I thought it was high time to put together a little blog about my Bad Moon orks. My screen name and avatar are my war boss after all. Didn't seem right to have an orky persona but be all-marines-all-the-time when it came to my P&M blogs. This probably won't be WIP intensive as my other blogs as many of my orks are already finished... but then again, there is still much to do.

As always, I welcome all comments, criticism and especially suggestions for improvement. To quote a movie of some years ago... "No opinions will be suppressed here!" (OK, maybe it's more of a paraphrase than a quote, but you get the idea.)

I'll start off with a few pics that I've already got loaded up on dakka. In some cases, I may update the photographs to show a little more detail... and since a lot of this army has been bought used & re-painted... I'll include appropriate comments when needed. I also have some stories to go with certain parts of my mob, so I'll post those with the appropriate pic.

So without further introduction... 'ere we go!

Seems appropriate to start things off with the big man himself, my warboss Oozegob Gitsplitta. Simple Black Reach ork warboss with an extra Bad Moon bit, scope and pet squig added.

The Story Oozegob Gitsplitta:
Back in the days when Oozegob was just another young nob in the mob, he was looking for a way to distinguish himself from the other nobs (aside from his constant drooling) and curry favor with the war boss. While he was ferocious in battle, it just took him too long to hack his way through the armor of the "oomies", "fairies" and "bugs" with his rusty old choppa to rack-up the body count he felt he needed to get the attention he deserved. So, he collected up his teeth and went in to see the mad dok for an upgrade... "sumfin' splitty-like", he said. Unfortunately the mad dok explained that in spite of the prodigious pile of teeth Oozegob had brought in payment, times were tight in the clan and supplies for such a modification were hard to come by, so only "battle damage" was allowed to be repaired by such a process. Oozegob... realizing that his dreams of advancement were being dashed before his eyes... flew into a rage. He took his own, rusty choppa and in one mighty blow... cut off his arm below the wrist. He then took the severed appendage and proceeded to beat the mad dok near to death with it. He then shook the bloody stump of his arm at the bloody stump of a mad dok, and bellowed... "Dere! Now dis is bat-le damage! Now git me my Splitta you Git!" When the dok regained consciousness, his orderly was immediately dispatched to get the clan mek, and after three days of intensive effort (and several more beatings)... Oozegob's mighty power klaw, dubbed "da Git Splitta" was created.

Over the years of course, Oozegob and his appendage have split a lot of gits... and his name and that of his weapon have become synonymous. "Oozegob and his Git Splitta" became "Oozegob the Git Splitta" followed by "Oozegob Gitsplitta" and now more often than not... just "Gitsplitta". It is a transition the War boss is entirely satisfied with. There is even some indication of a schizophrenic break in Oozegob's psyche, with some of his boyz reporting instances of Oozegob referring to his arm in the 3rd person and suggesting it is making it's own decisions. i.e. "Da Gitsplitta don't like dat... but I'll see if I can talk 'im inta it." Only time will tell if the role-reversal will ever be complete and Oozegob the ork will become simply an appendage of "da gitsplitta", rather than the other way around.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

And since we're on the topic of the warboss....

"Da Bronz Boss" (objective marker)
You see, Gitsplitta and his boys were raiding one year and came upon an Imperial installation that housed a foundry where a group of artisans made bronze statuary to decorate the halls and courtyards of government buildings all over the Imperium. Gitsplitta liked the idea of immortalizing himself in bronze, so forced the chief sculptor to make a statue of him. Fearing for his life, the sculptor created a perfect likeness of the ork leader. Gitsplitta was so enthusiastic about the results of the project, that he fed the sculptor his pet attack squig, Spot. (no wait... that's not right... must be a typo) "Gitsplitta was so enthusiastic about the results of the project, that he fed the sculptor TO his pet attack squig, Spot." (that makes more sense) No matter, I'm sure it was a great honor for the man whatever-the-case. Anyway, now Gitsplitta makes his warband carry this heavy bronze monstrosity around with them wherever they go, and the boyz of-course... not wanting to lug this thing around... have a tendency to leave it behind. So every once in a while, the boss realizes that is prize statue is missing and must send the mob out to retrieve it.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

And since we're on the topic of objective markers...

"Da Spook 'utt" (objective marker)
This is a dwelling that used to belong to Da Great Gobbo, a Night Goblin shaman and sometimes street magician that was a part of Gitsplitta's mob until he met his demise at the hands of an Eldar farseer. The hut has the unique ability to absorb and focus the ambient ork psychic energy around it. As a result, Gobbo's tent is the favorite place for the mob's weird-boys go to power-up their psychic powers before a battle. The tent's special attributes help the mob's weird-boys in the opening moments of a battle by amplifying their control over their first psychic attack. As one weird-boy puts it (after much drooling and gibbering)... "Da first bang, is da best bang!" Problem is that there's so much residual energy concentrated in this little hut after use that it has a tendency to "phase out" of existence like a ghost and re-materialize elsewhere... necessitating occasional retrieval operations by the boyz.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

And since we're still on the topic of objective markers...

"Rough sketch" of an ork objective for my Bad Moon army. It was my 6-year old's idea... I'm just the facilitator... though having the kopta blade chop off the arm & handlebar were my little added touch. Couldn't fit the diorama on a typical 40 mm base, but this isn't as big as the 60mm dreadnought base... prollly about 50mm.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here's the pic of some of the boyz... this was the first full squad I painted myself.

I love walkers.... ork, marine, eldar... love them all. Hearkens back to the old days when there were basically NO tanks... just dreads. Loved those days. My favorite walkers amongst the orks are my Killa Kans. Just too bloody useful to argue with and cheap too. These are the older style metal Kans, all purchased used. The only one I painted from scratch is the middle one, the yellow Kan on the right had a nice, basic paint job, so I started with that and added my own tint and a lot of detail painting (though it's base was very well done by the original owner, I just tweaked it so it fit with the rest of the army), the left Kan was well painted by a gentleman from across the pond... I just tweaked a detail or two. I added the riggers before I realized that squadrons didn't benefit from them, but I like the idea of hitchers-on... so in some cases I've left them on.

I have both grotzooka (pictured) and rocket launcher variants... speaking of which...

Here's the "rigger" for one of my RLs, he's a permanent addition. He spends so much time on top of the jostling gun he's brought his own little cushion to soothe his bum. He's actually a grot crewman carrying a shell for a cannon, I just added the fins and changed the position of his legs. He's a bit too shiny... should hit him with a different varnish to tone him down a bit.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here's a shot of one of my Grotzookas, made by another talented Brit. I think these are a much better match for the older figs than the new, really big grotzookas that GW makes.

You can find him at... http://www.ocd-publications.co.uk/ in the Accessories section. He makes an ork rocket launcher (as you would mount on a vehicle) that looks great too!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I think I'll hold off posting anything else until I get better pictures of them. Expect a couple of updates over the next two days.

OH... some quick painting notes...

Yellow: ArmyPainter yellow primer washed w/ sepia
Metal: Tin Bitz base- Bolt Gun Metal dry-brush, washed w/sepia
Skin: the lighter orky green (can't remember the name), sepia wash, then a dilute wash of Thrakka Green to "green it up" a little bit.

More later...

Oh for God's sake man you KNOW how busy I've been with the marines.... haven't touched my orks in weeks! Going to rectify that tonight.. just struggling to make a list so I know what needs painting.

Borkin wrote:Cant have a badmoon without a gold plated toof or two .

That's an excellent idea.... didn't think of that. I'll rectify that with my next boss... Thanks!

Here's a bit that I made to be "extra armor" for the kans before I discovered that they don't benefit from it. Still like it though so I put them on anyway. These are dread leg plates, which I thought was a very logical bit of extra armor to have... Will eventually do the same for my Deff Dread. Wanted to make them look really chewed up so they looked like they were looted from a wreck.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Next is my Deff Dread. Another old metal model, purchased off the internet with a basic paint job. I did some pretty major re-painting on this one and added a CCW and the old skorcha turret (any grot you can see is a good grot). The rigger in the back has a little pin in his foot so I can take him on and off easily.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Detail of the Skorcha & rigger:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Next are some examples of my Lootas. I have a full squad... it took FOREVER to paint the little barsterds. It's what I get for actually painting all the modeled detain and adding a wee bit of my own...

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A Big Shoota that I had some fun with... I like being able to mess with the poses. Primal rage is good...

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My painboy and grot orderly... had a bit o' fun with the blood spatter from the circular saw.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The last slugga for my big slugga squad... it was quite an ordeal getting them painted. Anyway... take a wild guess on what day Sluggaclause was finally painted... and where would he be without his faithful "elf"??

Last night's efforts... put the extra armor on the deff dread, same idea as before. Made these blue... more or less ultramarines... I didn't damage these plates as I decided they were a fairly new addition to the dread from a wreck that just didn't happen to take any leg damage... probably scavenged from a marine/eldar battlefield where a clean shot with a lance would have taken out the machine with little collateral damage.

Left leg armor... orks put their own challenge on the little scrolls on the leg plate. (Kik Dis Kan)

Right leg armor: The original plate had a saying or litany inscribed in it... the last two words of which were "Lost Hope"... so I covered up the earlier part of the saying with the menacing glyph and figured the words and glyph together would convey a telling message. The claw in front of the leg made taking this pic rather difficult, sorry for the blurriness.

Close-up of the glyph with back-lighting. You can see that it actually has a "glass eye". This was achieved using Micro Krystal Klear, which goes on like thick white glue but dries clear and stays together over small gaps like glass (learned this trick when I was model railroading). I tainted the glass with a little Baal Red wash for additional menace. Unfortunately you can't really see it under normal circumstances as it needs to be back-lit a bit.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Lot's of last-minute painting... not all of which is photo worthy, but these two are good 'nuff. Couple of squigs for Zogwort's special ability. Figure if I'm going to squigify someone's IC the least I can do is give them a nice squig to replace it!

One of the things going on today at the tournament is a themed objective competition. Since I only had two ork objectives I needed to burn the midnight oil in order to come up with a couple more. I'd been thinking about a "squig cage" for quite some time as being a objective. Especially as my war boss has his pet squig "spot" who might occasionally get left behind & need to be retrieved.

And lastly, my weird boy objective. A friend of mine gave me this old figure that hearkens back to my early days of playing 40k. It was partially painted, but so small compared with a "hero" ork now-a-days. I Mounted it on a boulder and gave it a little diorama to help improve it's stature... but it just never was convincing to me as a character... so I did a bit of re-painting & now it's one of my objectives. "Weird Unkle Oiving"... who has gone completely potty and spends most of his time by himself with his terrified minders, summoning massive amounts of psychic energy and leveling the countryside with them... to no specific end, it just seems to keep him entertained. He is however, one of Boss Gitsplitta's favorites (he makes him laugh), so the War Boss insists on sending the boyz to retrieve him when he goes walk-a-bout.

Just a side note: The four objectives pictured above won the "best objectives" competition in our FLGS's tournament last weekend. Since we came in fourth in the overall point score (which wasn't bad considering), it was a nice little bonus!

My new terrain came in!

I got tired of spending thousands of dollars on figures and thousands of hours painting, then playing on garbage terrain... So, I found an artist that makes 40k terrain and contracted for an ork mek works... or stompa factory.

Here is one broad shot of the results... 18 pieces total. Walls, gate, scrap piles, effluent pond, many industrial buildings and of course, the assembly area in the back. It's sized for a real stompa, unfortunately at the moment I only have the old Epicast version, so it looks a little small in comparison.

The artist is Pat Ohta of Senji Studios. http://senjistudios.com/ Neither my photo here, or his photos on his web site do these pieces justice... they are incredible!

Been a long time since I've worked on my orks, but since I have a tournament with them next weekend and some building & painting to do before then, I thought I'd post a few things...

First, one of my nobs needed a Waaaagh! banner. I needed something simple, fast and impressive.. that could be moved to different figures as needed. Luckily, I came up with a simple solution.

#1) Cut a 1" section of brass tube and glued to the base and butt of one of my nobs. Be very careful that this tube is aligned vertically in all directions.

#2) Cut a 4" long section of a smaller brass tube (one that slides into the larger tube on the base) and glued a couple of impressive orky glyphs (In my case from the stompa set, but you can make your own out of plasticard) to the end.

#3: Slide banner in and out of tube as needed. Additional "base" tubes can be added to any figure, so the one banner can be effortlessly moved around however you wish! Whole process took about 20 minutes.

I'll post one more pic when it's painted & flocked.

Gits

Automatically Appended Next Post:

Next project... interchangable wepon arms on Big Mek w/ KFF.

Automatically Appended Next Post:

And the completed banner. Kind of a slap-stick painting job, but it'll do for the tournament and I can always come back to it later & dress it up.

LOL fatty...

Thanks guys. This should be the "active thread" for a bit as I get ready for next weekend's tournament. Just about done basing my nobs, so I'll take a shot of that. Need to paint up a small squad of grots and the Big Mek of course.

One last build element on the Big Mek... I'll probably be adding a nob shoulder pad to disguise the cut for the replacable arm... and who knows... maybe an iron gob too (since I usually give my characters 'eavy armor). Think I can get that done over half-time... *grin* Go Bears!

Well, it's kinda the other way around. When I made my "official" gaming table, I flocked it like one of my bases.... a really, really big one of my bases. They're really easy to do actually. Do you think it would be worth a tutorial?

I can imagine how tough that is. It's been a pretty interesting year... lots of surprises both good and bad & a lot of teams having much different records that expected. I love my Bears but I'm highly skeptical of this particular group. We'll see. I enjoyed watching your boys beating the Viks in the season opener though...

Glad you guys like them. I'll try to get one together from start to finish at home tonight with photos so you can see the steps involved. I'm sure I've got a figure somewhere that needs flocking.

They are stupid simple... with the right stuff you'll be doing 'em like a pro after no time at all.

List Question:

I currently have 2 units of 7 lootas, but in most cases I see people recommend small units of 5 lootas. Would I be better of exchanging those 4 extra lootas for something else (like and extra nob or two for my nob squad) or should I keep the loota units at 7?

Thanks!

Woot! I'm a huge ork fan, and very happy to see you give your Bad Moons some more lovin. I'm also really looking forward to how you will paint your big mek.

For the arm joint, I would try to have your nob shoulder pad attached to the backpack, to make it look like part of his harness system.

*edit* Regarding your lootas, it all depends on your list and point level. Multiple small units of lootas give your opponents more stuff to shoot at, and as they won't have a bosspole, they tend to break easily. If you can scrounge up 15 points, you can always add a third squad. If you've got a warboss, then those nobs you want can be counted as a troop, meaning you'd have 3 elite slots to play with.

As an alternative, you can run them as a unit of 9 and a unit of 5 lootas. This would create a bigger threat in one squad, meaning your opponent is more likely to shoot at them, so you gain more tactical control on the battlefield while essentially retaining the same firepower. It would also let you better allocate your shooting in that you could use the big squad to shoot at medium armored targets such as a dread, while your small squad can knock off rhinos or equivalent. This way you would have less of a feeling of wasted shots.

60 more points of nobs will give you two more nobs with kombi weapons for wound allocation (assuming you take cybork), so if you're feeling your nobs are too delicate, you can use them as more ablative wounds.

From a math hammer perspective, lootas are one of the best units in the game. They probably are the best against light armored vehicles (AV10/11). A loota averages two shots at bs5, which means that two lootas give you, on average, the same firepower as one SM autocannon. So, for 75 points, you're getting what a space marine player pays around 100 points for in a rifleman dread. The disadvantages are their low leadership and randomness, which means they tend to be a soft target and aren't as reliable as you would like.

And I 100% agree with your previous post about painting lootas, or just orks in general, They have so many details you want to work with that it's insane. I painted up some tac marines and did 7 marines including two PW sarges in about 3 hours. I can easily spend 3 hours alone on one boy, and I'm up to around 20 hours on my 5 lootas (including the big shoota), with them only about 80% complete.

Excellent idea Heff... think I even have some bits that I can use to scratch build a more mekanikal looking shoulder pad. Since this is the "standard" KFF Mek I was hoping to make some modifications to make him a little unique. The interchangeable arm was a good start... your shoulder idea is a great next step.

Thanks man... that's usin' your noggin!

I have the same problem. I think I'm actually going to get rid of my Burnna squad and make a third Loota squad. I'd have two small loota squads in terrain and then the third squad of lootas in a BW cruising around the board shooting the crap out of anything that moves.
