Subject: Red Corsairs WIP (Tiger Claws Return from the Maelstrom)
So I decided to update this Blog to suit my recent changes in my Army. For those of you who haven’t read this blog before please keep in mind that I have copied the Original Post and pasted it in the second post to avoid confusion.
In April of 2011, I have decided to give up on the Chaos Codex. I never really thought of the Red Corsairs as Chaos anyway. TBH I don’t even think of them as Traitors or Renegades. I think of Huron as a monarch and the Maelstrom His Kingdom to Defend; the Red Corsairs, his Royal Guard. But instead of being called King he named himself Tyrant. The Tyrant of Badab. The Imperium was threatened by his power and unjustly removed him from his throne. All titles and records removed. Like any monarch with their kingdom lost, He Fights Back. Builds an army with anything he can take from the plate of the imperial table.
That being said I believe that the Red Corsairs would have access to all SM equipment and technology (anything they can take). So the next step was to pick a codex. So I created a Thread Red Corsairs List from Chaos to Renegade Marines and with a lot of help I chose the SW Codex.
HQ: Huron Blackheart - complete
1 Wolf Lord in Power Armour, (Belt of Russ;Wolf Tail Talisman; Power Weapon x1; Powerfist x1)
Here is my old Chaos stuff some of it could be used others are waiting for the next codex:
Terminators - Complete
Havoc Units
3 Heavy Bolters - Complete
Lascannon - Complete
2 Defilers - Complete

(The original post has been moved to here for clarity and continuation)
So I received a PM asking to create a thread of my Red Corsairs and Progress. Currently I have a Showcase thread of all my completed work called Master of the Red Corsairs, and a WIP of a Marine swap with Gits, called Last Corsair Standing. But i dont have a blog of my actual progress of the Red Corsairs. I have a tendency to not finishing things(I still haven't finished Gits marine ). I have alot of half finished works and new ideas that I started that I would like to post here. Maybe with a little push I can add finished work to my Showcase.
As for what I'm doing right now:
I started to make a squad of SW Chosen. Captured and converted (or even stolen geneseed) from the wolf of Fernis. These will replace the Chosen lost in the Last Corsair Standing battle. These will be called Huron's Wolves. I bought a Rhino on Kijiji, and it had the razorback top piece glued on, using plastic glue so there is no way that that is coming off. I painted it the same colours as my other Rhino but I added alot of weathering and rust to it. The interior I painted grey, and put on some space wolf decals in there. I then used the Hairspray method and using my air brush, painted it bleached bone. I then scratched off some paint to make it look like animals were trapped in there like dogs (HA! I kill me). I haven't done it yet but i decided to use a dollar store strainer as a chain-link fence and cover the openings. LIke a Dog pen or kennel, with a 'release the dogs' feel. As for the Chosen's progress, I have painted one body and I really like the way it looks. I converted a SW bolter to a melta and it needs to be painted. I have also painted 20 SW faces to pick and choose from. This squad of chosen will be 2 meltas and 3 flamers. I am magnetizing the arms just in case i want to change this.
I'm not a fan of the Red Corsairs being Chaos. I believe that they are just Renegade SM. (I really don't see them as Renegade either, more like they were betrayed by the Emperior). In time I would like to convert my army to SM so I started ripping off the heads off my Khorne Berzerkers. I want to make them less Khorny (Ha! I did it again). I'll make them a SW/zerker mix. Huron playing around with SW geneseed. I have air brushed a majority of them with Red Gore basecoat. I have run out of paint and would like to buy the Vallejo Game Colour Gory Red and Bloody red, but i'm having a hard time finding it. I was also thinking that I might use that converted Rhino for my Berzerkers instead (haven't decided).
I have added to my first Rhino. I have cut out the Red Corsairs symbol out of plastic card and glued it to the top doors and painted it to match my avatar picture. I want to cast this symbol so I don't have to do it again but its already finished and worried about wreaking it. After I do it I would like to put another symbol on the side, but just the fist.
I have also done alot of work on my LR. It's about 90% done. Painted using my airbrush.
like I said I have alot of unfinished business. I really need to finish Gits' Marine
I normally Dakka when I'm at work. So the text usually gets written here and the photos are added when I get home. I will take a picture of everything for each section. Maybe with some inspiration I will figure what to work on first.
Thanks ahead of time for your patience and alot more puns to come

I did a bit of clean up on my first post.

Keep the red bright, I say. I enjoy painting red, but it can be hard to pull off right. I'll be the army will look great on the tabletop. I hate dull looking armies.
Though guards may sleep and ships may lay at anchor, our foes know full well that big guns never tire.
And this is what I have added to it. I have cut out the Red Corsairs symbol out of plastic card and glued it to the top doors and painted it to match my avatar picture.
Like i said in my first post I want to cast this symbol so I don't have to do it again but its already finished and worried about wreaking it. After I do it I would like to put another symbol on the side, but just the fist
Here is the current WIP of my other Rhino the one I bought on Kijiji. I going to cut up a cheap strainer and cover the openings for a chain-link fence to make it look like a Dog pen or kennel, with a 'release the dogs' feel.
The Interior
I still have alot to do for this as well

Two questions, firstly how do you paint your red? it looks exactly like the colour I'm aiming for.
Secondly, how did you get the peeling paint effect on the inside of the rhino, its amazing!
Keep it up!

Thanks, I have alot more pictures of all my WIP but I dont want to overload with too many pics.
As for the red on my marines:
Basecoat: Mechrite Red
Then: Red Gore
1st highlight: 50% Red Gore and Blood Red
2nd highlight: Many thinned layers of Blood red, until smooth
Wash: Devlan Mud in recesses (I'm now experimenting with 50% Devlan Mud and Baal Red wash)
3rd highlight: re-apply the Blood red
Final highlight: 40% Fiery Orange and 60% Blood Red (They no longer make Fiery Orange, but it is pretty much Blazing Orange and yellow)
As for the weathering inside the Rhino I used the Hairspray technique

TBH im not sure what to work on next i have soo much to do
like this Land Raider:
I painted this using my airbrush, but I ran out of paint. I'm looking to buy new paint but I dont want to use GW paint. I would like to try Vallejo paints. Unfortunately I need Vallejo Game paint and I can only find Vallejo model paints.
These Game Colours in particular:
Gorey Red
Bloody Red

Nice stuff so far! The converted SW for your bodyguard are great.
You might want to wait until you start a model fresh to switch to Vallejo- switching mid-model can be a bit odd, even with fairly compatible ranges.
Infinity: Way, way better than 40K and more affordable to boot!

Thats a good point. I guess I'm off to GW and my wallet will be $20 lighter!

I started Working on my berzerkers. And I need a little advice. I started ripping the heads off them, (Because I dont like the rabbit ears) and filing down the khorne symbols. They are still going to be my berzerkers I just dont like them looking like berzerkers.
Here is what my berzerkers look like before (mind you I only painted 2)
Here is my test model. The shoulder pads will be black with red trim
What do you think? Any suggestions?

I got a good price for them. The paint job on them was done with an air brush and it looks pretty decent. The only problem I had was the everything is glued in to place. The turrets, Storm bolters, doors, hatches and even the front window cover.
For my army, well the Chaos part of it, only needs Rhinos. So the first thing I needed to do was take apart the Predators. Luckily, the main turrets on both, only had a bit of super glue. So with some force they came off easy. With a bit sanding it was easily cleaned as well. The sponsens were easier to come off. Woot I have 2 more Rhinos! But I didn't spend money on Predators just to make Rhinos. I plan to magnetize them to switch back and forth for when I switch over to Space Marines. The problem I have with them now is the back and top hatches are glued and not budging.
The Razorback's top hatches switch from Rhino Hatch to Plasma/lasscannon turret. The Plasma/Lascannon turrets are also glued in place. With force I managed to separate them into each piece. I then pinned them so it now pivots up and down and the turret also rotate. Again the back hatch and the Storm bolters are not budging.
Is their a way to weaken superglue?
There are nothing wrong with the SM missile launchers or the Dreads. Although for the dreads, I will need to buy bases as these ones didn't have any.
The next step would be if I should paint them all or not. Now My army, being the Red Corsairs, they pretty much take technologies and refit them. So should I leave them the way they are and just put a red 'X' on them? Should I do the hairspray method and paint over them and scratch way the top layer paint to show the colours underneath? Or do I just paint them in my colours?
Suggestions really needed

Great looking miniatures i wish my corsairs were that good!
as for the dreadnoughts i think the hairspray technique would be the best as long as the corsair scheme is more prominent.

The other way to work on super glue is with acetone. Stop at your local drug store and you can pick up acetone in the nail polish remover section really cheap. Don't buy the hobby acetone as you'll pay about 10x as much for it and it's the same stuff.
Anvildude: "Honestly, it's kinda refreshing to see an Ork vehicle that doesn't look like a rainbow threw up on it."
But what about the plastic? I heard that the acetone tends to soften the plastic or even melt it?

Talking to friend of mine, he suggests that I paint all of them in my colours but make 1 Rhino with the hairspray weathered paint flakes showing spots of white and green
like my SW captured Rhino

That's a good idea Styro. I was wondering about the esprit d' cour (sp?) of the corsairs... Would they go out of their way to make equipment look perfect (i.e. take pride in having a cleanly "corsair" rhino) or would they just make it identifiable so it didn't come under friendly fire & then use it up until it was just discarded. Not meaning to cast any aspersions here, just wondering about your opinions on the "professional pride" they would take in aesthetics (as opposed to things that worked well for them, which is another matter entirely).
