Subject: How to Paint the lightning effect on a Dark Eldar Whip (or other whips for that matter) [Video]
You sir, are a legend. Im a new DE player JUST about to paint my first whip and was dreading how Id go about doing this but it looks (emphasis on looks!) a lot easier than I thought.
Any thoughts on how to colour an electro corrosive whip? I want to raise it from green at the handle to blue at the tip, probably with yellow in the centre as a transitional colour but I confess to being slightly intimidated by what sounds like a really complex paint job
Ive been thinking about painting the gauss tubes on my Necrons. And this tutorial I think, just shoved me into the area of Im going to do it lol. But Ill go with blues instead of greens. Very nice

Thanks for the comments and I am glad the vids are inspiring you guys to paint outside your comfort zone!
Kitch, you probably are aware, but as a reminder blue and yellow make green so I believe it would be a perfect colour to play around with blending.. My best advice would be to make a whip out of green stuff, and use that as a template to play around with. Hell, if you don't like the results a 1 second spray of primer and you can start over without worrying about gumming up your model. If you do try it but aren't pleased with the results, take a pic and I can have a look at it to give ya my opinion, for whats that worth anyhow

I just want to thank you for the informative, and very detailed tutorials you're putting out.
This one is inspiring, and even though I dont have (or need) whips at the moment, I am certainly going to keep this technique in mind when it will be needed - I will eventually get some Dark Eldar
Although i wonder how this would look on a power sword

I youtubed all your stuff and it was all very helpful A++ on the tutorials my friend.
Walk in the shadows and deliver the Emperor's justice into dark lairs of his enemys. Strike from the shadows and let them fear the very darkness they call home. Embrace the shadows for when all others would be driven mad we shall remain whole.

I would think it would scale up well, but may have to blend different colours along the way so you don't see the definitive separation between colours. I think an airbrush would be the best method then the lightning fine brushed. Good luck and if ya try it share your results!

well that's the thing, i know how to do it with an airbrush and it looks really good, but i don't own one or hav the money to buy one, so i've been looking around for ways to do it with brushes but i can only find vids using the smaller minis not vehicles.
Thanks
P.S. If i can borrow my friends, i'll def post a pic

I would suggest trying it on paper, or even on an older model first. If you try it with the brushes, make sure you really water down the paint, and I mean REALLY water down the paint. Secondly, don't rush it, patience, patience patience. If the paint is so watered down, you will barely see the colour change after you paint it, thats EXACTLY what you want, but it will take layer after layer after layer to get the colour to change, so again, patience. Or borrow an air brush :0 Cheers!

I don't expect anyone to do a seperate video for this (though if anyone has one, do link!) but could any of you guys help me out with a purple scheme for it? I'm a new player and although i do have the basics os highlighting my armor plates etc. down, i simply can't seem to find good colours to do a purple lightning whip. I currently have the hormagaunt purple foundation and both liche and warlock purples, but i can't seem to get them to transition smoothly and I've nowhere near enough knowledge of painting or colours in general to swap in other colours without it looking horrible.
I did try using the technique in the vid with what i have, but theres no way i can make it transition from liche into warlock without looking well... horribly obvious. Would thinning my paints help here? I see loads of talks of it, but i can't seem to be able to find anything on how much to thin or what the exact benefits are. So, yeah, any tips for a purple colour scheme for whips/power weapons? (and sorry for kind of necroing, but i figure it's not too bad seeing as it's a tutorial and i'm trying to use it)
