Because I hate myself and love having too many projects, I've decided to muck about with Lizardmen. I love the special characters already in the book, but none of them feel particularly right for me (none of the ones I can field at my point level, anyway. Delicious Kroq'Gar...) so I decided to try my hand at bashing together a Lord-level Saurus character just for fun and games.

I've been homebrewing 40k stuff for a while, but am new to Fantasy, so I ask that you guys tell me if I'm way off-base with my points costs or my rules text. I have a bit of fluff, but not enough to make it worth including in this first post.

Maka'Teko the Thrice-Dead - Maka'Teko the thrice-Dead is a venerable Saurus warlord. When he was spawned, the Slann Mage-Priests of Tlaxachihotl foresaw for Maka'Teko a great destiny. His victories in battle are many, but most fascinating about him are his defeats. It is said that he cannot be truly slain until that destiny comes. Three times Maka'Teko has been slain by mighty foes, and three times he has risen to take vengeance on his own killer. It may be that the coming of the Twin-Tailed comet is a sign that Maka'Teko's time is running out, but for now he remains a fearsome warrior and cunning general. Those who plunder the jungles of Lustria would do well to fear him.

Blackscale - 250

Stegadon's Crest:
Shield. Once per game, Maka'Teko may issue a challenge that may not be refused. If he does not slay his opponent the turn he issues the challenge, he suffers one wound with no saves of any kind allowed.
(I priced this at 25 points because it's got a potentially powerful ability, but it's one-use, situational, and can be deflected by eating the challenge with a unit champ)

Ancient Fang Blade:
Spear. Maka'Teko gains the Devastating Charge and Hatred (Monsters) special rules.
(I took the 8-point Spear, then added 15 points for each Special Rule. Then I rounded it up to 40 because multiples of five).

Thrice-Dead:
Maka'Teko cannot be truly slain until he has fulfilled his destiny. Before either player deploys, nominate one enemy character. Maka'Teko gains a 4+ Ward save so long as that character is alive.
(4+ Ward trinket is 45 points. Gave it -5 points because of the drawback.)

Fire-Madness:
Blackscale has the Hatred special rule against foes with Flaming close combat attacks. If Maka'Teko is slain by a Flaming Attack, Blackscale automatically fails his Leadership test against Monster Reaction. He will react as though you rolled a 5-6 ("RAAARGH!") result.
(Priced this ability at 25 points because while it's situational, it does bypass the Monster Reaction with arguably the best result.)

An interesting concept. In terms of fluff and composition, I'll say the following:

- it might make more sense to say that, while he has suffered grievous wounds, it seems impossible to kill him. The idea that makes Saurus so cool is that they are tough, implacable, and ferocious in an entirely mundane way. There's nothing magical about them; they're tough, they're patient, and they're completely single-minded, and all of this to a nearly supernatural extent.

- making another Special Character Old Blood on a Carnosaur feels redundant. Why not just tone down (and update) Kroq'Gar? Or put this guy on a Cold One, or on foot?

Now, as for the mechanics:

First, let me say that I like your pricing method (it's the same as mine). I'd actually go as far to say that this guy costs too much. Which is a great sign.
Second, I'd like to say that this character actually feels Special. I see too many "Special Characters" with talismans that grant a 4+ Ward save and a magic sword that grants +s and +2A. This guy, though, is unique. Well done. But I digress;

- his shield costs too much. The Brettonians have a similar item for 10pts, but it's not one-use-only. Granted, they aren't dinosaur people riding t-rexes, but still. I'd put it at 15pts.

- 15pts for Devastating Charge is a bit costly; for 5pts more, he could +1A all the time. Really, for only 3pts more, since you rounded up the weapon's cost. Hatred (Monsters) is fairly priced, I suppose.

- Thrice-Dead is fairly priced, but a little odd. Why is it connected to an enemy character? It's a cool mechanic (he's like a reverse-assassin), but I feel like you could do more. Maybe he can only ever take 1 Wound per attack, protecting him from the Multiple Wounds and Killing Blow special rules as well as effects that force him to pass an ability-test or die?
I'm also a fan of Gor-Rok's "any successful attempt to Wound him must be re-rolled" idea. Combine these two, maybe even make him T6 or W4, and now we've got a seriously tough lizard.
Or we could do a Vampire-style resurrection rule, if you like.

- Regeneration is priced fairly, but I'd drop Fire-Madness to 15pts, and add in that Blackscale's Bloodfrenzy (or whatever it's called) is also triggered when he suffers a wound via a Flaming attack.

All in all, I don't quite get the character, though. He's the Thrice-Dead; he doesn't stay down. Okay, cool. But then he likes to issue challenges, Hates Monsters, and has a Regenerating Carnosaur? Now you've lost me.
I think you need to tell us: what is his destiny? Let's focus on character-killing or monster-hunting, alongside being a tough nut to crack. But not all three. Or maybe just being durable is enough?
Or is he some kind of Greater Daemon hunter?

Thanks for the feedback. I'm about to head out to my FLGS for a couple of games with my Lizards, but I'll give some thought to what you've said and try to rework the character.

A couple of quick thoughts:

- Blackscale's fire theme is because Maka'Teko and Blackscale got smacked down by dragonfire - that was one of his "deaths" - and Blackscale's never forgotten about it. Now fire drives him mad. I like the idea of bloodfrenzy triggering from Flaming attacks. That's a good one.

- I considered giving him an option to take a Cold One instead of a Carnosaur, so I might try that. The reason for him having the Carnosaur is that I wanted a unique combat Lord that you can use between 1k and 2k points (since Kroq'Gar doesn't become available until upwards of 2500 points and the other Saurus characters aren't mounted at all).

- Thrice-Dead actually went through a couple different incarnations before I settled on the reverse assassination version. I thought about a resurrection, but I couldn't figure out how to word it - especially considering he's riding a monster some of the time, and it could get messy determining how "comes back to life" interacts with Monster Reaction. And I avoided the "only takes one wound" thing because that trick already belongs to another character in the book.

I'd suggest giving him a Horned One mount with some slightly enhanced combat abilities, and save the Carnosaur for your oldbloods. Will bring the points cost down a fair bit for the mounted version and wont overwhelm your Hero allotment.
Also tempted to suggest that he should have Hatred(Characters) instead of monsters since slaying enemy warlords seems more his thing.

So many games, so little time.

So many models, even less time.

Screw it, Netflix and chill.

To elaborate, Maka'Teko's destiny has to do with slaying a great enemy of his Temple-City. If he fails his sacred task, it will spell doom for his city, and could have far-reaching repercussions in the world at large.

Sacred Brood of Quetzl:
Ixitzichi was part of a specially-blessed spawning of Cold Ones. If Maka-Teko and Ixitzichi start the game attached to a unit of Cold One Cavalry, that unit loses the Stupidity special rule and gains the Immune to Psychology special rule for the duration of the game.

Okay, so I'm not sure whether I want to keep Blackscale as a mount option or not, but now Maka-Teko is mounted on a magical, slightly less stupid Cold One. If I do bring back Blackscale, he'll probably be a 200-point upgrade that replaces the Cold One.
