Subject: Freebooter's Fate News (Updated 1/14/2015) - January releases
The Intro Since everyone else under the sun has their own dedicated news & rumors thread on Dakka, I figured I would make one for Freebooter's Fate, and try to keep it up to date.
Freebooter's Fate is a game about Pirates, and so much more. It is also, sadly, woefully unknown in the States (and outside of Germany in general I think). They consistently crank out some very characterful miniatures every month and IMO also some of the best. They're sculpted by Werner Klocke (a frequent sculptor for Reaper, et al) - and his style seems a bit ... divisive. So it's understandable if not everyone is inclined to agree with me. But he has a large, dedicated following of fans he's built up over the years.
The News
Latest News 1/14/15 January releases!
First off - we have Little Pete, the pirate! He's fond of dealing out shots below the belt.
Next we have Jeudi - Cultist, and king of swagger. He has a rooster on his shoulder!
Finally - we have Alicija Degollara - Sansame Hunter for the Impalas. (And La Noche de Brujas release)
We're very nearly at the end of releases for BOTH La Noche de Brujas and Mystic Spirits. (I can only think of 3 more off-hand) so it will be interesting to see what the months ahead bring us.
Older News
Spoiler:
November/December releases! - I've been super busy, and been slacking. So here's two months worth of releases!
First - the La Noches de la Brujas campaign book, and token sheet. (Why they made these separate releases I'll never know)
Then we have the yearly LE release - Carly Wench - I can't say I'm a fan :/
Fortunately - things pick up from there with:
Mrs. Juanhijo and Samuel
El Enterrador, the gravedigger
and El Tronco
For December we have:
Spoiler:
Dodos! Dodos are a scenario objective for Freebooter's Fate.
Speaking of objectives - we have another deck of cards! This one will add secondary objectives to your games.
Minis-wise we have - Calvario Vigueta and his Balagonecos
Momma Fiara and her thievin' monkey
Tzinka the Amazon (and Batman enthusiast) with new, better paintjob!
and finally - a stylish Freebooter pin!
Whew.
nice one, Schmapdi...
good to see someone giving Freebooter more love...
Werner is one of my favorite sculptors, and his Freebooter stuff is some of his best work...
Klockenbooty all day...
@Cincy: you could always hire me to paint my Qualani, then it would be all yours...
cincydooley wrote: Hmmm. I'm sorely, sorely tempted to do that. If you're serious, that is.
i wouldn't tease you like that, bro...
shoot me a PM, and we'll talk...
the whole reason i collect all the LE's is to paint them, and then sell them on, so people can have awesome rare minis with a killer paintjob...
the pride of my Werner collection would have to be his Rackham Isabeau, and his Angel, but his yearly LE's are all quite nice, too...
the cook, the dancer, and the clockwork fairy all have amazingly sculpted dresses, and the pirate girls are just fun...
i could go on all day about his sculpts, i mean, a goblin wearing a shark...
how awesome is that!?!
love it...
I've been collecting freebooters fate minis for about 2 years now. I own all of them but a few of the LE which have become more difficult acquire than Studio McVey's Kara Black le, which I now own 3 of.

These pics come from Spiel Essen - courtesy of Moechtegern Pirat from the official Freebooter's Fate forums. So I didn't want to link them directly.
But click and you can see painted versions of the crew shown above, as well as the missing 4th member (a pirate-y not Lara Croft) and the full reveal of the painted L.E.
Other surprises include some new Sansames (zombies used by the Cult faction) and Zombie Octopi (used for a Scenario in the new book).
**Edit** - apparently, the cloak on the LE mini is an optional piece if you, like me, didn't care for it. Sadly the silly crown perched on her head is not.

I have some sets of the figures from the indiegogo project and would really like to see more about this game.
Werner was an officer and a gentelman in dealing with all through the project.
Great looking game, but a little confusing.
At Games Workshop, we believe that how you behave does matter. We believe this so strongly that we have written it down in the Games Workshop Book. There is a section in the book where we talk about the values we expect all staff to demonstrate in their working lives. These values are Lawyers, Guns and Money.

What do you find confusing about it?
And I intend to start putting together a faction primer, etc here in the near future. I'm hoping to get some new eyeballs on the game so that it will maybe be a hair more popular in the English-speaking world. Or at the very least give me a thread to chat about the new releases where 90% of the discussion isn't in German.

"Just to give you all a final heads up, allow me to draw to your attention to the fact that the year of our anniversary is drawing to a close and so we will only be selling the legends from the Legends boxed set, Papa Houngan, Chassa, and Virgo Despiedad until the end of Crisis 2013 in Antwerp. And not beyond. Even if we should have stock left and no matter how much people plead. The capt’n was overheard using the word “melting pot” at Spiel last week. (For the miniatures affected see http://www.freebooterminiatures.de/en/news/2616) So if you want to get your hands on one of the boxed sets or one of the individual miniatures, please get your order out during this week or come and see us at Crisis. It will be too late after that. We really mean this; limited edition really does mean limited edition as advertised here at Freebooter Miniatures. Arrr!"
The affected minis will still be circulating via 3rd party vendors until stocks run out. So they should last a little while longer at least. Still, I'm surprised to see they'll melt down any remaining stock. They're kind of hard-nosed about this stuff too. They wouldn't let people add money after-the-fact when the Indigogo campaign (that produced the Legends) was over either.

Got the first post squared away and hopefully set up as a nice foundation for future news and further information about the game. Wish I had thought to reserve the second post too though. :/
Also added some information about Companero - the Freebooter's Fate app.

Bonjour!
Yes, it is very good! Pretty well-balanced (shooting is strong but reloading plus terrain normally keeps that in check), very piratey (obviously) and good mix of (basic) tactics and luck. The card draw mechanic can be a bit slow in the beginning but it adds a certain positive tension to the game (hit zones).
The game is still very much alive, having just received a magic expansion, a new faction and an (Android) app for the game. There are just not that many FF players in a forum primarily turning around GW games.
Freebooter's Fate is ridiculously well supported. A few weeks ago I counted up the number of minis they released this year. 38.
And that's not counting the sidekicks to the legends. That's a fair bit higher than normal due to it being the 10th anniversary celebration year. But for such a small team it strikes me as impressive.

It is a very fun, tight little game. The models are expressive, wonderful sculpts and typically cast very well. Some can be a little tricky to assemble, but they look beautiful and come with scenic base inserts too.
The game is fun and flavorful without being loaded down with rules. The rules have a nice brevity to them and a bit of flair that is different from what you get in some other wargames. Models and factions are pretty well balanced and the game has been getting a nice pace of quality updates and new releases for some time now. In short, it is well-supported without spamming out so much new stuff that you can't keep up.
The game lends itself to characterful, narrative play, and I find it to be the kind of game where it is just as enjoyable losing as winning. Some scenario rules are a little squidgy, but plenty of them work very well, and it is very easy to work up your own scenarios. The rules are also excellent for games larger than 2 players. I regularly play 4 and 5 person games of FBF that run wonderfully.
All of the factions have a unique play style and have a range of different types of crews you can make. I've found most builds to be viable, but you often need to learn how to play a faction well. Whatever your preferred style/crew is, you need to spend some time on the table getting a feel for how the models 'click' on the table. There isn't so much in terms of buffs, combos, and so forth, but more of how to hit the right rhythm with your actions and activations so that your models are positioned well to get the most out of them when you need them.
Freebooter's Fate is absolutely worth a try. There are a lot of pirate models on the market and a lot of swashbuckling rules too, but FBF manages to distinguish itself in both areas. I wouldn't say it is the kind of game you'll be playing every day, but it is a fantastic game for a narrative campaign or a side game to what you normally play. You can get a respectable crew for not much money and the game will always be a refreshing change of pace.

Kirasu: Have we fallen so far that we are excited that GW is giving us the opportunity to spend 58$ for JUST the rules? Surprised it's not "Dataslate: Assault Phase"
AlexHolker: "The power loader is a forklift. The public doesn't complain about a forklift not having frontal armour protecting the crew compartment because the only enemy it is designed to face is the OHSA violation."
AlexHolker: "Allow me to put it this way: Paramount is Skynet, reboots are termination attempts, and your childhood is John Connor."

I had decided to try to paint 3 Freebooter minis a month in order to stay ahead of new releases (normally 2 minis a month) and reduce my backlog. *sigh* So behind!
