Hello there, I am Paul. I have been into wargaming and miniatures for some 24 years after getting hooked at the age of 8. That was all GW but in recent years I have moved onto different companies and games. The most recent change has been me selling my fantasy armies and moving into skirmish games. So recently I have moved onto Malifaux and was a backer of the Mantic games kickstarter for Deadzone, this is a blog of miniatures for those systems and maybe the odd different little model here and there. I would describe myself as an average table top standard painter, but this blog will see me trying to get better and maybe learn some new tricks.

Today saw me begin painting my first ever Malifaux miniatures. So some initial WIP shots of:

Mr Graves:

Kang from the Rail Crew:

and Lazarus (those mould lines have to go!):

I currently am just buying whatever Malifaux kits I fancy the look of, and have no real idea of which models go with which faction, all part of the fun of learning I guess.

Thanks for looking

Paul

Little movement on the painting front this week, but two big things have happened. Just 8 days ago we adopted 2 male cats from the Cats protection league, so please welcome in Alvin and Snowball (I will let you guess which cat is which)

in other news i got some new goodies delivered from Total Wargamer (whose issues mainly seem to stem around GW stock) in the form of a Deadzone Plague Support booster, and a plague monsters booster as well as a Dreadball terraton which I will be using in Deadzone.

But most importantly of all I have managed to finish my first two Malifaux miniatures in the form of Lazarus and Mr Graves:

As you can see I need to do a few minor touch ups here and there but they are basically done. Next up I plan to paint The Rail Crew and either get to work on my Plague boosters or start my Marauders.

So got my Plague monster/support boosters made last night, my favourite model of the bunch is the Plague Terraton:

i had to do a bit of work on what Kryten from Red dwarf would call his ""Groinal Attachment" given that it was missing from the box, by all accounts this is not an unusual problem.

I like the look of the Plague Mortar as well:

And some of my previously completed plague minis:

I know nothing about Malifaux, but I really like that Mr. Graves model. I always like looking at Deadzone stuff as well so I will probably be hanging around here some. Keep it up.

Cheers Squall, I know relatively little about Malifaux too and was only looking for something else to paint when my FLGS pointed out the range. I love the Wyrd/Malifux plastics, up there with the best in the market, I have no clue about the ins and outs of the game.

So a little progress today with my newly delivered Nexus Psi "1 click collection" . First up is the evil space Dwarf Mercenary "The Helfather". He has had a basecoat of boltgun metal followed by a drybrush of Hashut Copper. After a wash of Army Painter Quickshade Strong Tone ink had dried I added a verdigris effect with a wash of turqoise. I do not really know where I am going next with this one, but adore the miniature so will try and do my best.

I have also started the Zombie Terraton, the problem being I forgot how I painted my first batch of Plague . So I started with Mechrite red and then a drybrush of a flesh tone. I think I will deal with the bone pates next and then onto the Terraton armour.

I am keen to get my Marauder Hulk done too, he looks like a hard case but do not mind him, he is 'armless:

Finally i decided to paint my Space Psychic jellyfish the Chovar. I wanted to go a bit bright for this one, too garish maybe? Plenty of drybrushing and highlights to come for this one:

He is a metal mini and each of those 8 tentacles has to be individually glued on, so I cheated and glued 7 of them to the base to try and prevent them falling off. That is it for tonight, I am now off to paint but cannot seem to shake the feeling that I am being watched...

I don't have the Hell father yet, but I intend to pick him up. I find that on the verdigris, its best to go back with a light black wash to help subdue it and make it look more natural. That being said, I'm not the best painter in the world, but thats been my experience.

You plague scheme is sweet. I like that they look close to the stock scheme, but much grittier and less cartoony, which seems appropriate for a Deadzone.

Also, my dog watches me paint, so I know the feeling.

Cheers Squall, i have completely nerfed the verdigris now. plague wise i wanted a really different scheme to the Mantic studio one, but they just ended up that way so I guess it was meant to be.

Anyway I have completed the Helfather and Chovar. I gave the Helfather a nice warlock purple scheme:

And rear shot:

And the Chovar:

Should have the Marauder Hulk and Plague Teraton done soon as well.

I like where you went with the Helfather, the colors work really well. I certainly wasn't expecting the purple.

The Chovar looks good as well. Though I wouldn't be able to stop myself from painting it up like a Hanar from Mass Effect.

Nice work chief.

Well, you most certainly took the Hell Father in a whole other direction. That being said, I like it. Just not what I was expecting.

I think that was a smart idea with the chovar's tentacles. Its the only chance you have of not having to reglue his tentacles every time you play with him.

Oooh hoo, another deadzone friendly blog And I found it before it was a dozen pages in too! Excellent!

The purple Helfather gets my vote too, and that Chovar is looking nice.

Good plague scheme too, looking forward to more stuff

Thank you gentlemen, I have been a bit lax of late as my favourite band have been on tour and I have pretty much been on tour with them. But here is the task at hand:

My Malifaux "to do" box:

And Deadzone:

So about 70 minis to get done, and i want the DZ ones done before my 2nd survey KS delivery comes in june/july time.

And a touch more WIP on some Marauders:

I do not know if these fellas need a spot colourbut i will get them finished over easter weekend.

Thanks for looking.

They're looking pretty good! The hulk looks fine without more color though the ripper might not be opposed to it.

Cheers Grim, it has been a while since I posted but I have made a fair bit of progress. I do not know why I was reluctant to start painting the Marauders but now that I have I am really enjoying painting them.

So my Hulk:

Rippers: (I was not a fan of the ammo belts so went without them):

Mawbeasts:

Pyro:

And the rest of the Marauders ready to go:

Finally I have also finished the Plague Terraton:

The bad news on the Deadzone front is i have had to dump my 2nd survey Kickstarter order of £200 due to a £5000 odd bill to replace the roof of my house, some things are just more important.

Yup, I had Forge fathers, Asterians, agizillion zombies and plastic peacekeepers on the way, scenery etc etc. A bit gutting really as I will have to reconsider my hobby budget for a good 6 months.

Glad to see that you are up and running painting again Grim.

I really like that Hulk's face, the varying skin tones are cool.

Have done more Marauders, they do look better in the flesh, maybe sunny daylight photos do not suit my painting...but I am not very happy with these.

I am really enjoying painting them although the style is probably a bit too cartoony, but I guess I am stuck with it now.

I really dig the model for the Guntrakk, and the little no nonsense goblin piloting it.

I think the Captain and the goblins turned out really well, though the metals on the trakk seem a little thick, but that is probably just the curse of having so many large flat surfaces. Otherwise excellent job.

Cheers CC, the metals are very thick. I daftly added layer after layer and just could not get it right, and removing some of the restic mould lines left a right mess that was hard to cover. But lesson learned, hopefully.

Constructive criticism like that is always welcome, I just seem to have hit my plateau as a painter but am trying to get better but feel like I am getting nowhere. I think thinning my paints may help (and certainly would have with the Guntrakk).

Am certainly going to continue with some normal Marauder Commandos this evening.

Honestly its not so much a knock on your skill so much as the difficulty of the mini. Most large flat surfaces look good when they have something added to them, like freehand or weathering. That's why so many vehicles look really good all weathered up.

Your Malifaux models are wonderful, and you paint very well with the more organic shapes. The Chovar you painted is an excellent example of that, as there isn't a lot of 'bits' to the model, but you made the most of it and really added to it.

Thinning the paints will help a lot there, though you gotta be careful so they don't get 'drippy'. Looking forward for whatever else is on your table!

No worries, I did not see it as a knock in any way. I have always aimed to be a tabletop painter, as long as it looks good from 3/4 feet away on the gaming table I have no real problem. I may continue with some Malifaux tonight, my Rail Crew are staring at me.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
So ended up doing a bit more painting tonight, got 2 Malifaux Rail Crew members done:

Kang:

Emberling:

Just three rail workers to go now and then I have completed my first Malifaux crew.

And I do not think i have showed any of my deadzone terrain so here are a couple of shots:

I think I have nicked the theme from Infinity, not to worry eh?

Yeah, that Mei Feng model is excellent. I love the pose, and the paint scheme looks clean and well done.

I like how muted your Rail Crew is with the colors, and the rather bright light/dark contrasts that you work into the clothing.
The terrain looks good as well. I might pick up some of that...

Cheers gents.

@Chemical Cutthroat: I think that Grim will also attest that the battlezones are great kits for Sci-Fi wargaming, whatever game you play. They go together great, and can be assembled in an infinite number of ways at a great price. I glue mine rather than relying on the connectors for modularity though.

Here is the new "Ruins battlezone" due for pre-order soon:

Yeah, that does look good. I bet it would make great 'prefab' looking buildings for an Ariadna table in Infinity. I like how they have the rebar/piping sticking out in the holes out sections fo the terrain.

I'd probably glue mine together as well. I prefer solid terrain, especially since I play with lots of large, heavy, metal miniatures. My Maghariba Guard haaaates papercraft terrain...

You can glue structures together and use clips to securely stack or otherwise connect them. Two buildings together, walkways to buildings, towers onto buildings, etc. I can see easily convincing myself to add one of the small - medium sets to an order from miniature market. At least once I run out of what I've already got.

I imagine that tag treats paper cargo containers like Mario handles goombas.
