Hi, I know I have asked about FOW stuff before , but i was just curious on how I might put together a good beginner german force, for a budget...... I have my eye on possibly purchasing the open fire box set, and trying out the germans, etc, but I was just curious if maybe there was a good starter list for A basic rifle force with a couple tanks (from the open fire set) or mobile infantry list....... or a panzer grenadier force? I'd like it to be an average list, that will be ok at each game, and wont just get beaten right away. Also, would it be possible if I made it so it is styled as the North African troops of germany during ww2?

Honestly -two- of the open fire sets would get you a pretty sold, if a bit repetative starter force. I think it points out in the 800 points range for CV grenadiers.

Two boxes plus a mortar blister and possibly some AA, plus you would have a second army with the British.

Though you could secondhand sell that, pick up some PSC halftracks and maybe some panthers and have an army with tons of options.

EDIT:

Went and ran a list based on the two box approach. This points out at 1725 for Grey Wolf Grenadiers.

HQ (boxset)
panzershrek (boxset)
2x med mortars

1st Gren (boxset)
2nd Gren (boxset)
3 rd Gren Pioneers (sub with boxset)

Weapons platoon
4x med mortars (purchase)

3x PaK 40s (boxset)
Grenadier Scout (boxset models)
3x 2cm Grenadier AA (purchase)

3 StuG Panzer platoon (boxset)
3 StuG Assault Gun platoon (boxset)

Its not an optimized list (the StuG platoons need work) but it maximizes models purchased to get you in the game quick. Its 9 platoons with the option of splitting the mortars into 2 to give you 10 if the odd/even break is important.

Hmmmmm......ok........ I was also thinking of maybe trying the plastic soldier company models, since they arent as expensive, and since im on a budget, it might be nice to not kill my wallet just yet.

The starter set for FOW is about the best deal going. Plus you will still have to shell out for a rulebook anyway (though I highly recommend you take it to a Kinkos and have it spiral bound). You should be able to buy one starter and trade the US for the Germans from another set.

How is your starting budget? Around a 100$,you can do pretty good.If less,i would go with open fire and trade or sell the Allies part off.or go with some PSC,Peter pig and Zvezda goodies for a force and buy your books used off ebay.Intel and rulebook. I guess for me it would be what time period and COmpany,Armored,Infantry etc.
I am pretty good at helping people with BUDget armies i have helped build several for people over the years.I am not sure on your group but LW is the most popular.

Get the PSC German Heavy Weapons box. It gets you a bunch of stuff for $30, I wish it was available when I was buying my German Infantry.

I was in the same situation as you AndrasOtto. When I was putting my German force together I used the PSC German Infantry and some small packs of HMG and other heavy/special weapons from Peter Pig and Command Line.

I made a blog about my choice of miniature OrkKiller21 (I haven't just focused on price, but just on what looked cool!) hopefully might be some interest to you

A million times, this. Mine had pages falling away from the moment I opened it. But it's easily fixed if you can get it bound. Nothing worse than having the pages in the wrong order when you're trying to learn the basics of the game.

PSC infantry are really good! I recommend their tanks as well. I have a mixture of Zvezda and PSC Soviet tanks, and those from PSC are superior in every way.

My only hesitation with suggesting PSC infantry....how "ham fisted" are you?

Are you like me and prone to forgetting you sat that platoon of infantry off to the side for reserves, only to brainfart and put your copy of Grey Wolf on top of it?

Does Murphy's Law behave around you such that it is a guarentee that when you drop a base under the table, the percentage that you will place your foot exactly on top of it reach levels greater than 100%?

If these or similar answers are "yes" then I might suggest the "beefier" BF plastics or even metals. Yes, you will shell out more initially. However you will decrease the likelihood that your platoons start to look like the Walking Dead. PSC infantry is not forgiving.

This is very true. Plastics are good in their own way, but you really need a decent way of transporting them and to make sure that they're well looked after. I've not consciously damaged mine in any way, but I have an odd rifle or two snapped at the end.

I can only recommend that you get them painted ASAP (make them more noticeable, and precious!) and ensure you can safely take them to/fro your games.
