First Attempts at 15mm ... These are the StuG's from the Open Fire boxset. I've got a box of Panzer IVH's on the table drying in the midst of construction.

Next step ... infantry. I find this task, slightly more daunting:

Any Advice?

Looking good so far. StuGs always were some of my favorite German armor. Are you going to hit those with a wash to help make the seems and armor plates pop?

My piece of advice for dealing with 15mm infantry is to use an assembly line if you want to finish in any amount of a reasonable time. When I painted 28mm I could do one figure at a time and be happy with the amount of time it took. Now it's "everybody gets the same base color for their uniforms, now let's do all the boots, now the pouches and webbing on all the models..." using that method lets me finish about a platoon of infantry in an evening.

Tressel, it did get a watered down brown wash as given in the guide here: http://www.flamesofwar.com/hobby.aspx?art_id=3555 followed by some dry brushing.

Should I do the same thing again? Or not water it down? Or go with a black wash? The wash's I have are both GW, the Nuln Oil and Agrax Earthshade. I don't have a lot of experience with washes and i'm afraid to ruin thins and have to start all over.

Thanks econtutor, that was kind of my plan. there's a lot of boots and pouches ... and webbing

Don't get me wrong. They look fine, but if you go through and do a little additional shading in the recesses between the panels it will really help make them pop. I totally agree with the assembly line style for painting infantry. It is the only way to do it.

Kiwi,
There is a technique that I've picked up for washing on tanks... Some call it pin washing. Using a small brush, apply the wash just in the recesses between the plates and grills and such. It really helps to up the contrast.
Other than that, your stuff is looking really good. I too have fairly recently moved from 28mm to 15mm, and it is a bit daunting to start. After just a little bit, through you realize that you CAN"T paint all the details that you would on the 28mm guys. Once that happens, you start to really fly through those infantry.
Though, I love painting 28mm infantry and 15mm tanks. 28mm tanks just have too many flat areas to look at brush strokes (even if they are only in my mind!).

Okay, so since the last post I started working on all my infantry units, you can see the before picture above. What these means as well as that I've finished painting the German forces from the Open Fire box set. Pretty stoked about it. They aren't finished basing yet, but wanted to show my progress. So here we go:

The company commander, his 2iC, and their Panzershreck team:

1st Grenadier Platoon:

2nd Grenadier Platoon:

The 7.5cm PaK 40s, not shown are their command unit. Forgot to put them in, however you'll see them in the overall army picture.

My first addition to my army beyond the Open Fire box, was a pack of NW41 15cm Nebelwerfers:

And Finally, the painted army together:

Next up ... the box of Panzer IV H's. They are assembled, primed, and mounted on some wine corks for painting. After that it's on to the 2 boxes of SdKfz 251/D's in order to make those Grenadiers into Panzergrenadiers!

So, I've decided I want to take the allied half of Open Fire and creating a matching army to my german side that way I can have two armies to teach others to play and try to get them in to it.

So I notice the brits use Sherman Vs and the Americans have M4s. Since the open fire box is supposed to be British Armor with the US airborne platoon, can I use the Sherman Vs for M4s? I know I can't use the fireflies. I notice on the FoW online store they have seperate boxes for Brit Shermans and American Shermans.

Tomorrow or Friday I'll have up pictures of my nearly finished Panzer IV platoon.

For your first attempt they look very good. Actually finishing the painting is half the job. Are you going to add any base materials like gravel or grass ?

Since te photo, static grass has been added to all te bases. I put the last wash on the panzer's last night so later today I'll remove them from the corks and attach the schurzen. Fr there it's on to the half tracks. Will probably do the NW41 observers kubelwagen first since it's small

Looking good!

A nice way to get around the grind feeling of infantry is put 4-5 on a Popsicle stick. It really cuts down the psychology of painting them vs painting them on individual stands.

Panzer IV H's complete!

This brings my late war German army up to 1365 points.

Next up, some transportation! I've got a Kubelwagen and 2 SdKfz 251/10s on the drying rack after their soapy, and I've got 10 PSC 251/D's ready for sprue removal!

An update. I finished these a little bit ago but hadn't the opportunity to post them. I'm no Big P, but i'm pleased with my results. Not going to win awards but I'm not embarrassed to put them on the table! Photos are a tad dark, but here we are:

My Tank Destroyer Platoon ...

It currently has 2 M10 3" GMC ...

And the security section, a .50 cal Jeep and 2 M20 Utility Cars ...

My Armored Artillery Battery, currently just 1 section of M7s, but I want another section..

Close up of the M7 with it's crew ...

The "Ninja" M4 Sherman OP ...

And the AOP, a huge pain if you don't have any AA to deal with it ...

And finally plenty of Sherman-y goodness! First some M4 Shermans from the Open Fire box set, kept the 75mm on these:

Switched out the 75mm for a 76mm on 3 of the Open Fire Shermans ...

Here are 6 M4s ...

And finally, my group of M4A3E8s, love these things. Stabilizers plus Smooth Ride for the win! Expensive though ...

Next up, German pioneers with their SdKfz 251/7 (Pioneer) halftracks and Goliath vehicles, some MG42 teams, and an 8cm mortar platoon ....

You have really been busy and your painting is getting better. Not sure if its your photos(M10`s) but everything looks a bit on the dark side and perhaps needs a bit of edge highlighting ?

Looking good.

For my infantry I just glue them to the base and then paint them that way. I do a production line method but paint them in the same way as I would a 28mm model.

Follow the same method as the tanks. One thing I did find is the basing makes a lot of difference at this scale, some nice touches and details go a long way.

If you are interested the start of my german force can be found here:
