Hi all I've just found this ebay.co.uk/itm/360595969515 and wondered if anyone has any experience with them? Are they good/better than a board? Do they hold on to the texture or do you end up hovering it up after a game!

That particular mat isn't meant as a roll-out gaming mat. It's for sticking down to a board, for model train setups.

So would be a quick and convenient way of texturing a board, but not a portable solution.

Ah OK then there is no advantage of it.... In looking foot something that can be stored easier as my current board is big and bulky and even though I can stack it in 2x2 sections is quite thick and Durant fit in any cupboards..... Mind it was my first attempt at making one.... I might have another go with ease of storage in mind!

Frontline Gaming has some roll up mats ... the look incredible. I have not ordered one yet but I intend to in the next week or so.

Now, we like big books. (And we cannot lie. You other readers can’t deny, a book flops open with an itty-bitty font, and a map that’s in your face, you get—sorry! Sorry!)

Zuzzy do ship to the UK costing around $40 so its not too bad

I may just create another board that's thinner and can be stored easily!

I do prefer the boards to mats I think....though I've never played on a mat!

I have a Zuzzy mat and I like it a lot. My advice if you get one, wash it really good and scrub it before you paint it. Mine smelled quite strongly of latex for a long time and other people have said if you wash it, this passes quickly.

Cheers for the advice, how thick are they? Do they lie flat after being rolled up in storage?

I much prefer Zuzzy over the Frontline maps myself, Zuzzy is more durable, can be painted to a theme you want, and doesn't involve self-love advertising on top of the mat (even as small as it is, refusing to listen to a customer base because 'I want my name on it' seems jerky).

I have a Terrain Mat mat and some of the other stuff like hills and marshes.

It's pretty good, all stuff you could make yourself if you wanted to do the work but why bother for basic things like a mat and roads? I put the hills and so on on to new base boards, and concentrated my efforts on making SF building pieces.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

I like that it's cheap and easily put away. Though I can't imagine I'd prefer it to something I've made from scratch.... I could donate my current board to my local gaming club and go crazy and make another!

I would say 1/8th inch thick on average, and it will lay flat after being rolled up, it's (relatively) heavy and flexible material.

I have 3 Zuzzy mats and they are awesome. They are well worth the cost. The buying experience with them was the worst I have ever had, the only way it would have been worse would have been if the product never arrived. I still recommend the product just wish they had better control of production and logistics.

What would you wash/scrub it with? I have one on order, I have no illusions it will get here anytime soon, of course (I think it even says 6-8 weeks on the ordering page, and I've heard it sometimes takes longer).

But agreed about the product with the poster above... at least, from all I've read and seen, it looks worth it! Flat mats are nice but only go so far, and as mentioned, logos do kill them for me, too (Deep Cut offering a logo-free version is what got me to finally order their space mat this month).

I have an urban mat from Terrainmat and it's a nice piece of kit. The only issue I had with it was that the ends tended to roll up a bit on the tabletop.

I looked into one of the Frontline mats but the shipping price to the UK killed the deal for me.

I gave my Zuzzy mat more of a good wipedown than a true washing. In fact, I think they tell you not to soak the thing...I'm guessing that could cause it to buckle. Afterward, it smelled only slightly of latex and I don't notice any smell at all now. It probably helps that the top surface has been painted. I like my Zuzzy mat (Wounded City) a lot and it suits my needs perfectly.

Regarding wait time, they're a very small operation...just be patient with them. Mine arrived relatively quickly (2 weeks?), but YMMV.
