So my point is that normally when you shoot at a unit it's distributed 1-4 for monsters, beasts, etc. and 5-6 for handlers. However my problem is if the unit is behind an infantry unit and the infantry are between the firer and the target and the handlers being infantry normally couldn't be seen however the monsters, beasts, etc. are then the shots should only go on the monster. So in an easier sense if you don't have line of sight to the handlers (without counting the monsters in front of them) then you shouldn't randomize the shots to models that otherwise couldn't be seen.

In this case the fact that the Handlers can't be seen is sort of a moot point. Lets say you see a big Hydra standing behind a unit of Dreadspears. You decide to fire at the Hydra because thats the big nasty that you are most scared of. Your unit's arrows are fired in the Hydras direction and land in its vacinity. Some of the arrows are bound to hit the Handlers by default, regardless of whether they were the intended target or not, because they are in the same vacinity as the monster.

Obviously War Hydras dont have split profiles not for there handlers anymore, but that was the first example that came to my head.

Warhammer is the right of all sentient nerds!

Handlers are now just tokens on the battle field. Being able to move them anywhere, and not having them rank up means that rules that depend on the position of the handler is messy.

If that were the case though, I'd just place the handlers in front always anyway. I want you to hit the skink, not the salamander.

This is about Skaven Packmasters, I assume?
What they ought to do is take out that mess of rules all together.

Otherwise, yeah, as said above: it's not that some of your troops are aiming this way and others aim that way, it's that a volley of arrows hits whoever. Just random stuff.

I'd rather you have a chance of hitting my Packmaster, though. I had a unit of 3 Rat Ogres get Hail of Doom Arrow'd, and, because the rules are silly, 5 out of 12 shots hit my one Packmaster.

And since you killed off all the pack masters, that unit is now Stupid and Ld4.
The flip side, if all those shots hit the rat ogres, the Rat Ogres would likely be mostly dead anyway, reducing their combat effectiveness to near zero.

Well, considering that I lost the Packmaster as part of a Stand and Shoot reaction (didn't realize you couldn't use the HoDA that way), I was already in combat by the time they were Stupid, and they made their points back.
But yes. I'd rather have some MI that're Ld4 and Stupid than have some WS3 S3 infantry.

back to the OP
Packmasters are not "handlers", hence the confusion in the following posts. They're simply a component of a mixed unit
And my answer would be that the rules for Skavens mixed units are already a mess, don't try to make it even worse
