Hi guys I recently decided to get into 40k, I had some IG models when I first got into the hobby (maybe 15 years ago) but until now have been a wfb and lotr player. With the release of the new codex I thought this was the ideal time to get into 40k. After much reading I've come up with a 1500pts list that I've started getting models for. I've tried to balance models that I like and the army being competitive. I'm sure there must be a ton of weaknesses so any feedback would be much appreciated.

HQ

2 primaris psykers 100
Priest 25

Company command squad, autocannon 70

Tank commander Pask, Leman russ punisher
Leman russ vanquisher
Leman russ vanquisher

Troops

Platoon command squad, autocannon 40
5x infantry squads w/autocannon 300

Veterans 2x plasma guns, chimera 155

Fast Attack

Vendetta 170

Heavy support

Deathstrike 160

Total: 1500

Thanks for reading any feedback would be appreciated.

For Pask's squad, his two tank buddies should both be the same variant, as they will be shooting at the same targets. The Battle Tank and the Vanquisher fill different rolls so you'll effectively be wasting one of them every time you shoot. I'd recommend you make them both Vanquishers personally as you're lacking a bit of anti-tank and the Battle cannon is pretty lackluster.

Thanks! I've made the change and used the points to get a regimental standard. I'm a bit concerned that I have little in the way of anti air and not many scoring units, will this be a big problem?

The taurox is gonna die really fast especially if its the only one on the field. First blood bait tbh. I would switch to a chimera or drop it entirely and just give the vets a primaris , a third plasmagun, camo cloaks and a lascannon, so they can do some shooting from cover. This worked pretty well for reece from frontline gaming in their IG battle reports they just put up.

I've made a couple of adjustments, the plan for the vets was to keep them in cover and to go for an objective later in the game, I have pretty much no mobility. But you make a good point regarding the taurox blowing up, would the lack of mobility make some scenarios almost impossible to win?

Pask comes with a splitfire order from having the Tank Commander rule that means unless you're seriously in the pits and about to die, in which case Strike and Shroud is mandatory, you would always be using it, since both the Battle Tank/Vanquisher have effectively infinite range unless you are playing on an absurdly large board.

To a certain extent, yes. However, with two Leman Russ Tanks you can hide mechanised infantry behind them and wait for the oppurtune moment, blocking LOS. I would still reccomend the Chimera instead over the Taurox, because of the extra firepower and armour, if you're not spamming mechanised infantry.

Thanks guys this feedback is fantastic I'm learning a lot, I'm kind of glad you don't like the Taurox as im not a fan of the model, it looks so out of place to me. I like the idea of hiding the chimera behind the russes and then using it late game.

I would have two LMRSB with a vanquisher and pask on top.
Get rid of the autocannons becasue one your troop moves they cant shoot rendering them useless

While the deathstrike is better. I think it might be a bit gimmicky. Against a lot of armies with a 10 in pie play you will be hitting 1-2 units/vehicles. And then these is a 1 in 6 chance that a hit model won't get wounded. After that you are left with a chimera hull roaming around. I would suggest taking a look at the wyverns. Although their profile is lackluster their special rule do make up for it. They can consistently stack on wounds, rather than inconsistently making things go BOOM!

The only downside to taking a wyvern, is that it will do next to nothing against vehicles. To handle that I will defer to the split fire tanks in your list, keep in mind the Prescience to help you get over the BS3 for your vanqs.

To note, the autocannons can shoot, but just as snap fire (they will need 6s to hit)

At this points level it will be hard to only hit 1-2 units with a 10'' pie plate. You're certainly underestimating it. And yes, you can still fail ones, but if you hit a squad - say an entrenched group of infantry on an objective, you'll wipe 95% of the unit out almost immediately with no saves except very rare, and often terrible invulnerable saves as the only way of resisting the damage.
