What's up Dakka Dakka
Ok so here's my thing. I'm about to purchase a Space Marine Strikeforce to start off a SM army. I haven't decided what chapter I'm going to play though. What do you guys think I should do? I'd like something competitive but with a good amount of fluff (I really enjoy the fluff of 40K).
Thanks in advance

Drop pods are fun and can be fuffy. I do an unusual combination with Iron Hands in drop pods. Its a fun list.

I don't know SM as well as I'd like... What are Iron Hands specialty.

6+ FNP for everyone, IWND on vehicles and characters, and +1 to the blessing of the omnissiah. All the chapter tactics are on pages 77-78 in the SM codex

If your up for conversions do Black Dragons. Think Flesh Tearers, except with more mutations. Could use any of the marine dex really, it's more about doing justice to the fluff with modelling IMO.

Aurora SMs in 5th Ed (18 wins, 3 draws, 13 losses)

1st in Lords of Terra Open (Sydney) 2012

Aurora SMs in 6th Ed (3 wins, 0 draws, 5 losses))

I like salamanders, sergeants get a free master crafted weapon upgrade and flamers are buffed. If you take vulkan as your hq then melta guns are boosted too

DA army: 3500pts,
admech army: 600pts
ravenguard: 565 pts

Welcome to the Adeptus Astartes! The very first thing you should do is get the codex. Not only will it explain all the chapter tactics and fluff of some of the major Chapters, but you'll get to see what chapters specialize in what types of companies (some have more scouts, others have more Tacticals, some more Centurions, some have fast units like speeders and bikes, etc.)

If none of those appeal, check out the forgeworld chapter tactics:

http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/Downloads/Product/PDF/F/FWchaptertactics.pdf

Sometimes it is fun to base a chapter off of a certain character you like, how they would command their army, or how they look and decorate themselves. Check out the named characters in the codex, or on forgeworld.

You can always build and paint your own chapter and just use any of these rules, claiming to be a successor chapter.

I’d second getting the codex and seeing what sings to you. There are so many different ways to build a marine army. You need to find the one that fits you. What style of play do you like? What imagery calls to you?

Thanks for all the suggestions! I'm definitely going to go pick up the codex this week! I won't assemble anything until I know which direction I want to go. I've been reading up on Wikipedia and they're all really cool. I'll have to narrow it down.

Go with a do it yourself chapter so that way you can use whatever chapter tactics you want and can change if you want .

If you want something unique, you could try to design an army that is a scattered remnant of the 'wiped out' Flame Falcons.

One of the Cursed 21st, their geneseed mutation means they burst into flame in combat.

Assault focused, give em flamers, use the Salamanders tactics. Might be fun and viable with the right sort of support units.

Dunno how you'd model them being on fire unless you do something like Ghost Rider and have their heads on fire for the helmetless marines.

I would avoid the Falcons really thanks to the LotD tye-ins. But there are plenty of the cursed of the founding to go around.
