Hi. I'm looking into going Grey Knights as my second. But I need some help. What should I get first? I was going to get an HQ and some troops first but have limited funds and want to know what I should get. I was looking at getting Castellan Crowe for my HQ and Grey Knight Strike Squads for my Troops. Is that a good idea or should I do something else?

Long live the Chaos Space Marines!!!

I would suggest against Crowe as an HQ choice unless you plan on running a Purifiers army. He isn't an IC so has to go at it alone. If you are wanting pure GK I'd go with 2x Razorback Kits as you can do either RBs or Rhinos with them, 4x Strike Squad kits, a Dreadknight, and either Coteaz or a Grandmaster. This will for a solidbase to start with.

I'd also vote against Crowe, a Grandmaster or Coteaz is definitely the way to go.

If you want to start small I'd pick up two boxes of PAGKs and Coteaz (he's just sooooo good). It's tough to get a Grand Master model without buying a box of terminators and pimping one guy out - there's no single model unfortunately.

Hey I'm interested too. would playing an all terminator list be plausible? Not as a tournament list, just as a fun list. Also, what are my painting options? If I did anything other than the standard silver/gold would I be ostracized for blasphemy?

You can easily run a full terminator army, and the most competitive (not close to a Tau/Eldar level, just a warning) is Draigo + Paladins. You can easily make a 1750 point list with 21 models on the table. They are not as resilient as they were last edition but still cool in less competitive games. You could also use GM Mordrak w/ Ghost Knights and some supporting Terminators as troops, though I prefer Modrak with Dreadknights and Interceptors.

Paint wise, when I started I wanted to do something other than silver but couldn't decide on a cool scheme so defaulted back to shiny. As long as you don't paint them in the exact same scheme of another SM army it would be fine, I doubt anyone but the biggest fluff purists will burn you at the stake. It's good to distance yourself from Matt Ward's fluff anyway...

I play an all Terminator GK, which is great fun! Takes 6 boxes of GK Terminators to make a 1500pt list. 2 boxes per GKT squad, 2 boxes to make Mordrak, his Ghost Knights, and a pimped out Librarian.

Well, there are three main threads to GK. The first is a terminator-based list, whether with paladins like a Draigowing, or just using a lot of GKTs with or without some thawn and mordrak thrown in there. The second is going to be an army that looks a lot like a regular space marine army, with strike squads and interceptors, with or without the usual vehicles like razorbacks or land raiders, and with drop pods being swapped out for shunting. The third is going to be a coteaz+henchmen list if you want an army that looks a lot like imperial guard, except with the heavy hitting tanks and artillery swapped out with GK toys like dreadknights and stormravens and the like.

Which models you buy should probably be in line with which direct you want to take your army in.

You can easily buy a single GKT on ebay to make into a Grandmaster, or just use Brother-Captain Stern's model.

Terminators and Palidins aren't as survivable as they once were, but still fun to play. They are very unforgiving to mistakes though. The SS/Interceptors are pretty effective for their costs and with magnets you can swap between the two easily.

My current favored "deathstar" is 10 GKSS w/2x Psycannons, 2x Daemon Hammers, Psibolts, loaded into a LRC w/psibolts & MM, Coteaz, and an Ordo Malleus Inquisitor w/TDA, Psycannon, PML1. It is points heavy but i almost always end up with ignores cover or 4++ and of course presience, sometimes all three. Flanked by two DKs this pretty much always makes it across the board and lays down the pain. Thats 16 S5 and 8 S7 rending shots, all twin linked and on the move. Add in the LRC shots if it survives and youcan mess up a gunline fast.
