With the new unbound rules I knew straight away that I wanted to do an Ogryn army and with the new plastics my long dormant dream could finally come true.

The Dark in Dere! clan has been waging war against the orks and it's a war they haven't been winning. What they make up for in guts and tenacity they lack in range and the ability to bring down the ork war machines. Using hit an run tactics (as best as an Ogryn can manage mind you) the Dark in Dere clan has barely managed to hold onto a foothold of this worthless (but important to the Dark in Dere! clan) planet in the far flung corner of the universe. Until help arrived.

So with the new plastic boxset of Bullgryns and the vast choice of 3 units! 2 more than I previously had! I set about deciding on what point size (2500) army I'd like to do and what units I wanted to have. Choices choices.

The Dark in Dere! clan first and formost prefers the up close kill. That and the fact that damn Imperium (don't tell them the Ogryns said that!) put regulators on their ripper guns! So within the clan, newly recruited lads are given the clumbsy, albeit loud and fun, ripper guns. Here the recruit must prove himself that not only can he use such a weapon but that in times of need he can womp the tar out of a greenskin with it when it no longer goes boom.

If they have lived through this trial period they are handed an even louder boom stick! And a huge shield to help keep what remains of the recruits alive. More than likely the Bullgryn will take a war trophy and most prefer a more in your face weapon. A pointy stick! Good for pokin!

The remnants of these units will by now have achieved veteran status and are given the coveted power maul and brute shield. Elegant weapons by Ogryn standards!

For my 5 man Power Maul and Brute shield squad I decided on using Ogre heads from the FB boxset. The armored heads were a perfect fit for a head swap. I also opted for Zinge riot shields to give the unit an even more unique look. 20 days out and I am still waiting on said shields...

Here were some of the head swaps on the initial miniatures.

More to come in a bit..

I’m sure glad GW is going to all plastic, so the ever-rising cost of white metal won’t impact the cost of their miniatures.

So one of the first figures to be assembled was the leader of this rabble Nork Deddog

I am not a fan of the Grenadier Gauntlet at all. I think it looks silly. So that was the first thing to be scrapped. Knowing that the lads liked pointy sticks I decided on a weapon swap. The first thing I did was raid my friend's Ork bits for some suitable weapons. I found these weapons from the boar riders sprue to be just what I was looking for.

One of the nice things is that with a simple cut at the wrist these swaps are easy and look good. At least to me. So I created a unit with slab shields and spears. I gave the Bullgryn Bone 'ead a hand weapon to distinguish him. And I used heads from the FB Ogre boxset so that each model had a different look. I am also magnetizing the shields. The connector has recesses on both the shield and hand making this an easy task. I want to be able to remove them for transport and it'll make it easier to put into a figure case.

More to come...

So I was able to get all the Bullgryns magnetized. I took advantage of a nice day and I was able to get the units primed as well. Here are individual shots of both units. The idea behind the looks are that the units came from different worlds and therefore have a unique look and weapon preference.

Bullgryn Bone 'ead

The unit not including the previous picture posted of the standard bearer;

The 2nd unit of Bullgryns using the gas mask heads from the boxset

The Bullgryn Bone 'ead (I really like this pose and the ork slugga along with the goggles on the mask)

The remaining 4 Bullgryns

I have primed the figures white because I am going to use washes, Seraphim Sepia (Gryphonne Sepia) for the pants and Athonian Camoshade for the boots . The armor will be done in Ironbreaker and washed Agrax Earthshade (devlan mud). I plan to airbrush the shields Vallejo Model Air Gungrey for speed and also wash Agrax Earthshade.

I picked this technique up from another post and it's great for both speed and look for painting clothing. After priming the models white I then wash the model with Nuln Oil (Badab Black) and the color is then applied over that. I'll have some painted examples soon step by step for anyone interested.

More to come...

I've wanted to do this army for so long and I really thought that with the release of the new codex it was going to be possible.Every army seems to have a special character that if you take it in your list it opens up elite units that you could take as troops. I had thought that with Nork Deddog this was a possibility. I was really disappointed when the codex was released and this was not the case. The WHAM the new rules and unbound armies. I bought 13 boxes of Bullgryns the next day!

I will have 4 units of 5 Orgyns and I have assembled them and will be adding the shoulder armor. The Bone 'eads will get 2 should pads while the regulars get 1 to distinguish them.

After the shoulder pads were added I primed them white.

And then washed them with Nuln Oil. Areas I plan to hard paint have been ignored while the wash is mainly over the clothing and flesh areas.

I am doing the group as a whole so everyone gets the same process. First was the Sepia wash to the pants.

Then the 2nd wash of Sepia to the pants which darkens the color nicely. The black wash acts like a natural shade and works well, in my opinion, with this technique.

After everything was dry I started on the shirts. I decided I wanted them green and used Camoshade and as you can see it's light with only one wash.

A second wash and it darkens nicely. You can add as many layers of wash as you prefer to darken it to your satisfaction.

The model so far with a wash of Camoshade on the boots.

More to come..

wow.... you´re a fast one....sheesh...

and this will look amazing on the table... so many tall models ...there will be many oponents shy away from a force such as this...

also, the painting looks very good already... just washes is a way to get really smooth and subdued hues...

and...need to ask this... how well do ogre and ogryn parts mix? especially the arms shoulder connection...from the pics it looks almost identical...?

The only thing I used out of the FB Ogre boxset were the heads and weapons. And not all the heads worked. There are a couple large/fat heads that looked odd and silly when placed on the Ogryn bodies so they were discarded. I did however dry fit a few of the arms from the FB Ogres and although they will fit they'd need to be green stuffed once glued due to the gaps. Ogre arms for anyone unfamiliar are not like Space Marine arms which have a flat end at the should and arm. Ogre and Ogryn arms are "formed" with ridges and recesses specifically designed for the bodies they are made for. What I was able to do is swap around the Orgyn arms to different bodies. That's how I was able to get the advancing pose on the Bullgryns with the spears.

The washing really allows for getting color down quickly. Things will slow once I have to start painting armor and the like.

I got extremely lucky. My local gaming store was having it's Birthday weekend and all items in the store and any orders were 25% off. That was huge because it beat the online discounters and I didn't have to pay shipping. 13 boxsets of Ogryns later I had my army.

So here is an instance that the wash didn't look right. I thought perhaps I could wash with Ogryn flesh but it looks dark and patchy.

So I opted for the traditional painting of the skin. I also used this as a test model for the armor which was done in Ironbreaker and washed.

And here is a closer shot of the packs which were washed in 2 coats of Camoshade. The belts and shoulder strap were washed with Agrax.

More to come..

So as I was saying earlier things weren’t going to well for the Dark in Dere! Clan and Nork knew that although they were fighting the good fight it was a losing fight. Supplies weren’t an issue, they ate off the land. Ammo wasn’t an issue, they had plenty stored away in the mountains.

The mountains.

Well as luck would have it they had lost their way looking for the supply cave. Been there a million times yet they're lost. Nork sighed. The problem was everything looked the same. Completely turned around and knowing they needed to retrace their steps Nork was about to order the unit back down to the base of the mountain when an odd sight greeted him. It was a castle. A very old looking castle. Confused but more curious than confused he chanced a closer look.

As they approached closer he noted a symbol above the archway to the gigantic entrance of the keep. An entrance at least 50 foot tall with enormous iron gates. Set in stone above this archway was a carved skull set within the rock. A carved wreath surrounded it.

Nork frowned.

There was a bang and a shudder. The gates popped and creaked, complaining as they slowly opened.

Nork quickly barked a command and a shieldwall formed. Weapons readied.

Screeching and clattering the gates continued to open for the first time in centuries. And there they stood.

And Nork stood dumbfounded. His cigar forgotten for the moment. Mouth agape.

This will be the color scheme for my two Freeblade Imperial knights. The Brothers. I'll alternated the colors for each to give them each their own look.

One glaring problem occurred to me when I started this project. That for one Orgryns only had weapons that could fire 12 inches. And they weren't armed with anything that could handle armor. And having purchased an Imperial Titan it came to me that I could include these into my army.

As his eyes scanned the ancient machines, Nork quickly realized these two humans standing at the feet of the giant war machines were loyal to the Imperium. They were saved. Maybe. Nork knew he couldn't let this opportunity he had to rid this planet of the Orks slip through his fingers. There in the courtyard he bent his knee and swore fealty to these two Lords.

I have magnetized the torso so that they can pivot and separate for travel or storage.

I put a magnet right onto the ball of the legs

and then using a 25mm base I glue another inside the torso where the ball would sit into the socket and the two magnets would meet.

More to come...

A question - what parts do you end up with spare after building any one of the Ogryn variants, and can you do much with them? It looks like the only common parts across all three versions are the legs? (and heads being optional/mix & match?)

The common items between all the models are the torso, legs and feet. These are all matched (legs A, with feet A ,with torso A)

There are different arms for Ogryns, Bullgryns with Power Mauls and Bullgryns with Grenadier Gantlets.

On one sprue are all the bits to create any of the 3 units. and 1 sprue has the bits to make Nork Deddog. So after buidling lets say 3 Bullgryn with Slab shields and grenadier gauntlets, you'd have all the bits for the Ogryn unit , the brute shield unit, heads for the Ogryns, and bits for Nork as well as misc bits such as pouches etc. The bits word be useful to Ork players, the shields for example could be have a variety of uses as well as the power mauls. Arms and such could probably be used on FB Ogres if one so desired and didn't mind doing a bit of greenstuffing. Hope this helps.

Small Update

I got both of the Imperial Knights Primed. I had an issue with one of the arms which required me to have to purchase bits off of ebay to replace. waiting on those now.

The top armor is not glued on, just placed there for visual reasons.

I also primed the Slab Shields. These will be painted silver and washed similar to how I will be doing the Knights skeletons

Cool idea.
Since you are kinda early in your process, I'd like to point something out. A trap some armies fall into, and IMO some parts of your cool project is in danger of falling into the trap aswell.

When using WHFBmodels and wargear, your models look like WHFBmodels, with WHFB wargear. Using ogre bulls is a good idea, and I'm sure it's very tempting to use some of the clubs and primitive, brutal looking weapons that come in their box.
But IMO use caution. Because if you use too many you will loose your 40k OGRYN feel, and get a WHFB ogre kingdoms feel. The difference might be subtle, but it is certainly there, in my humble oppinion. Using the clubs for power mauls looks like it might work, and I think the idea is good.
But given your plans and theme, Id thought I'd chip in before you were too far along in the process to be able to meaningfully consider what I'm talking about.
You know best, and I'm not (hopefully) trying to tell you how to do your army. Im intrigued (and subscribed).
