Hi guys. Finally taking the plunge into fantasy after a few years of 40k. I've decided on dark elves (love the models, and as far as I can tell, they're a lot of fun without being overpowered).

Here's the thing though. I haven't bought ANY models yet. I've got a budget of around $450. Any tips for what I should get? I particularly like the cold one knights, so if you could keep that in mind for your suggestions it would be greatly appreciated. I already know I should get about 20 dark shards, just because they seem a solid choice

BTW - that 450 is just to get me started. I'll obviously be acquiring more as time goes on

The Lair of Vengeance....Poole.

I'd recommend getting the core of your army first. The specials and rares are very dependent on that.

For example; If you get a shooty/chaff core, you can support it with big combat blocks, or go for an avoidance list. But if you get Witches, you shoehorn yourself into getting specials and rares that support them.

The Dark Shards are a good shout. I recommend three units of ten with shields and musicians, and a unit of dark riders with shields, crossbows and a musician. And that will suit your core up to 2000 points.

The next major decision is characters. A level 4 is an obvious choice. I personally recommend Morathi, if you don't mind the hideous model. Or convert one. If you don't want a named character, you can always go for a generic level 4 on pegasus with the twilight cloak and obsidian trinket. You also need a BSB, for larger points levels. The standard seems to be a Master with the sword of might+Enchanted Shield+Dawnstone, Sea Dragon cloak and heavy armour. HOWEVER, if you're going for Cold One Knights, you can skip all that and go for a Sea Dragon Cloak+Heavy Armour+Cold One+Ogre Blade/Dawnstone+Sword of Might.

Then you just decide what you need to support and synergise with the rest of the army. Remember, No choices are bad!

How about this -

Dread Lord - great weapon, cold one, heavy armour, sea dragon cloak, shield, potion of strength, talisman ofpreservation
Supreme sorceress - level 4, lore of life, enchanted shield, dark steed

20 x corsairs - 2 hand weapons, full command, gleaming pennant
20 x dark shards - full command
5 x dark riders - shields

1 x cold one chariot
15 x cold one knights - full command, banner of swiftness
10 x executioners - full command

5 x warlocks - master

First attempt obviously. Thoughts?

Welcome to fantasy! Dark elves are a great place to start however unlike 40k the army break up is different, looking at your list it looks top heavy and possibly illegal. You start with a point target ie; 1000,1200,1600,2000,2400 are good targets, then apply the structure so a minimum 25% core, maximum 25% for hero's, the same for lords and finally hero's, then a maximum of 50% for your special choices.

I THINK you have two expensive lords which can't be 25% however that could just be me

If you put the total cost next to the units you'll be able to see the break down easier
