I am a new lizardman player so all C&C is welcome. Just from doing some research on the web this is what I have come up with which is currently at 1998. I want to avoid buying many more models if at all possible. One or two isnt too bad but I don't want to go crazy as I am already buying most of this from scratch.

Here is what I have so far.

Slann Mage-Priest w/BSB/Standard of Discipline/Becalming Cogitation/Harmonic Convergence
Skink Priest L1 Beasts W/ Dispel Scroll
Skink Priest L2 Beasts W/ Cube of Darkness/Ancient Stegadon
Saurus Warriors(35) FC
Skink Skirmishers(10) W/Javelins
Skink Skirmishers(10) W/Javelins
Skink Skirmishers(10) W/Javelins
Temple Guard(20) FC
Salamander Hunting Pack(2) w/Extra Handlers

Make the slann your BSB and give him the standard of discipline. A stubborn cold blooded re-rollable leadership 10 is pretty much the most reliable you can be in warhammer fantasy without being unbreakable. Discipline wise I would definitely go with the re roll on the first failed dispel per turn and the lore master of high magic. The lore has its uses ( standard saurus become terrifying with the boost to iniatitive and weapon skill spell) and you can just forget the spells that are useless and generate better ones early on in the game. If you really want to you could give him the channeling staff and the extra channel dice power for an average of an extra dice per turn.
For the TG I would bother with an item for you champion , though I would give the standard bearer the flaming attack banner or the Razor standard. Depends on your meta

Ok, the reason I was looking at magic items for the champion was because I am going to be behind on points to make my 2000. I ordered the 2 salamander packs and the slann-mage priest yesterday as well as some more warriors/guard to fill out the list I have above. The only thing I don't have above right now is the second priest which wont be a problem to pick up.

Are there any other units I would want to look at to round out the 2000? maybe another salamander or something?

I hear camo skinks are good too but I cant seem to figure out why, is it because of the survivability?

I think I am just going to go with adding the cold ones I have available and forgoing magic items on the guardian. I just need to round out the points now on the slann of what disc's and items I may use on it. Any suggestions from players who have played for a while?

For a fun non competitive game Ancient steg mounted characters can be fun BUT 1 good cannon ball and its dead and your little priest is all by himself to get shot to death. Also you want to get your stagadon into CC but not your priest so put a cheif on it kitted out for CC instead.

Coldones just arnt really up to par so good on taking them out but look at bringing in a unit of terradons or 2. really expensive kit but are awesome when used properly

Thanks for the input. Though I am out of funds at the moment to buy new models. I can always run the Ancient as a stand alone if need be. Though I want to try and keep a pair of priests for extra dice/spells.

What exactly makes Terradons so good? They seem pretty meh from their stat lines.

statline can be decieving because of the purpose they are best used for. They are your anti chaff, chaff unit. drop rocks on those pesky dog units, sabertusks and other re-directors the enemy throws in your way. send them over to take out warmachines. never charge something in the front arc unless it is small enough to be wiped. They are flying fast cav! park them in front of an enemy deathstar.... chose to flee when they can only charge them. Because they are fast cav the regroup automatically durring your next turn and can move as normal. Their only real issue that i hate is your gonna pay $60 for 3. That is really expensive for a unit barly peaking 100pts.

Don't skinks serve a similar purpose though?

No.

Skinks form a cloud, and focus fire and zulu dawn the living daylights out of targets, WHILST being chaff themselves. This also enables them to be anti chaff.

The Terradons are solely chaff, and anti chaff. The vanguard+20" move means they can be in the backfield on turn 1.

Got it, so they are for taking out high priority targets that you couldn't normally get to in time with other units? Ill have to put them on my "next to buy" list once I come up with some more cash.

Also can you explain to me the term chaff? I hear it alot in fantasy but don't quite know what it means, is it just a term to mean expendable unit?

Chaff are small expendable units that may or may not cause any damage, but it doesn't matter if they do, but nice if they do. There main purpose is to be able to counter deploy and redirect.

Counter deploy- placing chaff first helps you dictate the deployment by not putting any threats on the board and being able to put our heavy hitters where they can do the most damage. No beware that your opponents will also have chaff so the first couple of deployed units will be a "test the waters" kind of deal.

Redirecting- this is where you throw the chaff in position to take a charge and forcing the opponent to move their troops into position that would Benefit you. Be it helping you get the charge or avoiding their charge on key units.

Chaff is important but not always necessary, I've seen armies with little to no chaff work just fine, but it is a very helpful tool. It helps you control the pace of the battle.

Now skinks are great, and can fill several roles while doubling as chaff. Warmachine hunters, monster hunters, anti-chaff, and a general thorn in your opponents side standing and shooting is always nice and I try to position mine at an angle in front of a unit so that if the skinks hold (not always likely, but can happen) then I have a nice flank charge. Also to help this put another unit behind the skinks who then die the opponent has 2 choices.... Overrun into the unit behind the skinks or try and hold and reform. Both are good for us because either way we now have 2 units vs 1 and will get a flank charge. Please note this all in theory and things on the actual table top might pan out differently but I think you will get the idea
