Given the other poll surprised me at how many people thought 2nd edition was the best edition, it got me wondering when the peoples' of Dakka got started with 40k.

So, what edition was running when you started 40k?

I'd also love to know out of the people who have quit 40k, which edition was current when they quit, but such a poll would be relatively useless given most people who quit in earlier editions probably aren't reading the forums anymore.

I got introduced to 40k in 2nd, but I never did anything beyond pushing models around and rolling some dice when people told me to before 3rd. So, I voted 3rd.

I started off with RT then didn't have the chance to play the game once we got to the 2nd / 3rd cross over and took a long break before getting back into playing again recently.

Now myself and my friends play a mashup of RT / 2nd ed / Necromunda as a set of "house rules" - you could say we haven't moved on from the green base days!

I owned Rogue Trader, but I am pretty sure I never played an actual game of it. I played 2nd Ed for the first time on the day it was released.

I quite before 3rd Ed was released and came back to the game in 5th Ed for a few games. I never actually quit, but I also never got around to playing a game of 6th Ed. Maybe I will play 7th!

Started in RT. Never quit, but played some editions more then others.

Lots of RT (more as a RPG then wargame)
Just a smattering of 2nd.
3rd probably saw the most of my games.
4th was off and on. Probably averaged 2 games a year.
Good bit of 5th. Still sporadic, but more frequent.
6th was a lot more regular
One game of 7th so far.

2nd drew me in but I started weeks before 3rd dropped so it was the first edition I bought and played.

I started with Rogue Trader, as a Guard player. In 2nd I built my first Marine army, then Sisters, and picked up a bunch of the brand new metal Necrons. Stopped playing during 3rd, came back at the tail end of 4th with a GK heavy Daemonhunters army. Played through 5th and 6th, got shell shocked with the 20 days of Christmas Dataslate madness and haven't played a game since. Still working out what I want to do in 7th, or even if I want to do 7th. Been collecting new codexes, Imperial Knights, reading forums, waiting for GW to either collapse, get bought, or my new army to get finished to the point I can start playing again.

I started in 1988, so Rouge Trader, then finished when I went to Uni in 1994, which would be second edition. I then came back to the game in 2013, so 6th, and all I had lost since my first time round was three ork battlewagons

I started with 3rd but the last couple of years since 6th, have been the first time i really enjoyed playing 40k enough to stick around playing semi-regular.

From what i have read and been told by my older brother, i would have loved 2nd.

End of 3rd, went from being super good Necrons to uber-trash Necrons until the War in Fluff began where the Necron players split in TruCron and NewCron. 2011. Never forget.

4th ed is when I went through the breach into the warpstorm that is Warhammer 40,000.

Middle/end of 2nd, stopped about midway through 3rd because my FLGS closed and the next closest one was an hour's drive. Tried to get back into it in 2006 (4th?) and late 2013 (6th) but the cost to get back in (had to start from scratch as everything I had was lost) put the kibosh on that.

I am quite shocked most of the poeple who responded to this pole have been playing the game longer than me and I started ~10 years ago in 4th Edition. Quite shocked actually.

3rd brought me in, and I hung around to just before 4th as far as I can gather.

Rejoined for 6th and still catching up, it'll be a while till I pick up 7th or really get into playing. I like my collecting/ building/ painting more than the current game.

I also find making a squad codex compliant a bit of an annoyance compared to the maniacal joy of weapon swaps and conversions.

Of what I remember of 3rd it was quick and easy to learn as a kid and enjoyable.

Do not underestimate the Squats. They survived for millenia cut off from the Imperium and assailed on all sides. Their determination and resilience is an example to us all.

Started 2nd and Epic/Titan Legions. Folks had rules for RT, so we played a little there too. BFG, Necromunda, 3rd, 5th and now 7th.

4th was not well received and neither was 6th - so the playing group struggled. Really struggled myself with the cash grab of 6th - 7th transition, but thus far have been fine with the game.

Still hate GW business practice.

Started in 2nd and played the hell out of it. I had four armies back then... and only one was Squats. Played a bunch in 3rd but wasn't in love with it like I was with 2nd. Probably because I couldn't use my Squats. Played several games of 4th and liked it a bit more than 3rd. Probably because I'd put my Squat models in the crawlspace and had forgotten about them. Played a handfull of 5th. A finger or two in 6th. None in 7th.
