Hi all,

Elsewhere on the web I have some forum threads following the progress of my Empre and Orc armies, but now that these projects are largely complete I find that I need somewhere to document all the little projects that I plan to work on in the future. Hence this thread!

I'm currently painting up some terrain, as I seem to have neglected this aspect of my collection. I think the GW Arcane Ruins look great, and I always wondered just how much scatter terrain you could make out of one box rather than building a single temple. So this is where the thread will start. First up are two complete trilithons:

And also some collapsed trilithons:

And finally some fallen columns:

I now know the answer to my question: this is how much terrain you can get out of one Arcane Ruins box (with a suitably evil figure for scale):

Next up will be something completely different. Perhaps some Deadzone......

Love the ruins. They'd make a great centrepiece for a board.

Look forward to seeing more of your terrain.

Thank you very much - I'm very pleased with how they came out too. It was my first go with spray undercoating too, which saved a lot of time. Didn't want to risk experimenting on something with finer detail!

My attention now has moved on to Mantic's Deadzone, which I picked up recently. Here are testers for how I plan to paint the terrain, along with the only painted Mantic figures I own. Once again spray painting was key to getting the terrain done in reasonable time:

So here's a small update -- I now have enough buildings for a small compound:

Currently working on finishing off everything else. Have just got hold of Contagion as well, so now I have some ruin sprues to play with....

Thanks all for the comments!

They're mostly clipped together -- I think I had to use glue in a couple of places where I messed up the connectors getting them off the sprue, but that's about it. I'm not planning to take things apart, but the connectors hold everything together nice and securely.

I've now painted all the Deadzone terrain I own (well, except the Contagion ruins) and can put together a setup that looks like this:

There is something great about a fully painted table! Now to paint the miniatures to go with it.....

So I need something to put up against the Zombies. I must confess I'm not a big fan of the Enforcer models that come with Deadzone, and what I've read about cleaning restic further put me off (but maybe I should've tried for myself?).

Instead I've gone with the Anvil Industry Black Ops Exo Lords, which are fantastic models. I love all the extra bits of kit (pouches, magazines etc) that they have modelled on to them. Inspired by McGibs' log I decided to give them Space Marine beaky helmets...I've not played a game of 40K since Rogue Trader, so to me this is what Space Marines will always look like.

Given this nostalgia, there was only one choice of colour scheme: Crimson Fists. Here are the first 5, with more (including sniper and special weapons) to come:

Apologies for the quality of the photograph, but the light's not great this time of year. I've tried to clean things up in Gimp, but things are still a little blurry.

Thanks very much all -- I was very pleased with how they turned out. The Anvil models are lovely kits, and the GW beaky helmets fit them perfectly.

I realise it's 4 months later, but I've finally got round to painting the other 5 models in the squad. I really like the heavy bolter model that Anvil produce:

I also took the opportunity to take a clearer picture of the first 5 that I painted:

And finally one of all 10 together:

The plan is that these guys will be used as Enforcer stand-ins in Deadzone, once I get round to painting some opponents for them to fight....

Nice!

The photographs themselves are great too. I haven't taken a good pic of my models yet!

Forgive me now! Tomorrow I may no longer feel guilty...

Those Anvil kits look amazing, well done sir. I have a set all ready to be done up as Raptors myself, all beakies, all the time!

Thank you very much -- I don't have any lights or anything, so I have to rely on sunlight...which means my photography suffers during winter! Now that we're starting to get some sun I can get some decent pictures again.

Agreed: if it doesn't have a beaky helmet it doesn't look like a Space Marine to my eyes

I've put the finishing touches to my last bit of Deadzone terrain -- the ruins from the Contagion expansion:

Now I just need to paint some more models to use them with! Currently thinking about some Orks to pit against the Crimson Fists, but we'll see if something else diverts me.....

Nice to see some pictures of painted Deadzone terrain. I have a huge box of DZ sprues, both the original and the ruined sets.

The ruins above look particularly good - nice scorch marks!

Those ruins look very nice. And I also like the enforcers. Nice job!

Thank you very much -- the scorch marks were just drybrushed Chadaron Granite. They were quick to do but gave a nice effect, I think.

I've started work on the opponents for my Crimson Fists. In keeping with the Rogue Trader theme, it has to be Orks. First up is the leader -- he'll be a Marauder Warlord in Deadzone, and a regular Kommando Nob if I ever play 40K again. Some filling to do, but he's largely complete and ready to paint -- he loves it when a plan comes together:
