Having been away from the game for a couple years, and having dipped back into the game just recently in Fifth Edition my perceptions of the 40k hobby have been pretty well shocked. Being a long time lurker, and Guard player I figured that it was as good a time as ever to reacquaint myself with the game I know and love, and what better way than revisiting (a.k.a finishing) my now dust covered Imperial...ahem...Astra Militarum army. Hopefully this blog will be a good place to get some feedback and critique from you folks, as well as keep me motivated as I work on the army. I'm slow to paint, and even slower to post, so hopefully this will keep me going!

I'm typically a pretty over competitive person, and have decided to keep the list a bit more on the fluffy bunny side to prevent any tendency towards power gaming. Which means I get to make a super cool themed list! But enough of all that blather; the basic idea is to take what I have, add a couple models here and there, and paint em' all up.

The idea is that the 301st Ardent Rifles, nicknamed the "Redshirts" by higher ups in the chain of command, are an artillery company who as of late have been reassigned to an active front in defense of outer rim planets against Tyranid Incursion. However, their unfortunate nickname has less to do with their attire and more to do with the propensity for them to end up bearing the brunt of enemy fire power; as for the most part the regiment has been proverbially "thrown under the Rhino" in these situations. Being stationed on the desert planet of Voss, the Regiment has been ordered to hold tactical objectives including refineries, and manufactorums that are vital to the war effort elsewhere in the system. However, unbeknownst to the "Redshirts" the planet Voss has been considered a losing battle since the campaign began as the hot climate and long solar days have provided the Tyranids with an ideal environment for growing new biomorphs adept at surviving in such arid conditions. A trait that has proved to be quite appealing to the Hivemind. Upon introduction to the planet the 301st suffered catastrophic losses at the hands of the Tyranid vanguard forces, and now beleaguered and ill equipped the guardsmen are fighting a one sided war of attrition in order to buy time for reinforcements and supplies.

So yeah, the army is being modeled up as a kind gritty, hard bloke, style that most Guard Armies are these days. Lots of gear and battle damage, the usual assortment of headswaps, and some fun fluffy units that I wish were in the Codex. No tanks, strictly a gunline kind of army with some Forgeworld Rules for artillery emplacements. So far I've got a general list worked out, and plan to keep adding fluff to the narrative with each post I make. Hope to hear from you guys, and I'll get some pictures up quick!

Thanks a bunch,
Frog

Sounds good to me. Are you going to do some kind of defense line?

Welcome aboard, fellow Guardsman, and I look forward to seeing your work!

I am indeed doing a defense line with the force! That's one of the factors I'm still working on at the moment, as the Aegis Line looks great and all but is a bit drab in my opinion. I'm really hoping to come up with a cool trench look to go with my artillery in the future. I'm still working out which heads to use with my normal Guardsmen, and the color scheme as well.

Ok! So Here goes nothing: First post with pictures!

As far as narrative goes, the 301st have finally sent away for reinforcements, but sadly their cries have fallen on ears, that while not deaf, might have some impairment. After bitter struggle and weeks of grisly warfare, Imperial Cruisers have delivered a new batch of recruits to the front...fresh from the academy...with nothing in the way of dealing with Tyranid Biomorphs. However, thats not all! After hearing rumors of rebellion and dissension within the ranks of the "Redshirts" being sown by the beloved Company Commander Crowley Finch (a.k.a. Old Bones to all who know him) the Imperium of Man has seen fit to send a number of Commissars to keep Crowley's men in line, and priests to ensure their salvation as they die in droves on the gunline.

I'm going to paint most of my priests in that manner (partially because I finally learned how to do color transitions), but as for the color scheme of the basic guardsmen and conscripts, I'm still a bit up in the air. I want to do a darker green or brown scheme, but I'm a bit hesitant as I can't seem to get the colors right.

Pick a base color high light and wash that work together well - that's how I do all my stuff these days. Priest looks good!

I'll have to try that! Hoping to get some of the conscripts painted this afternoon.

Well this looks like it will be fun.

If your doing a green brown scheme why not do basic cadin?

To be truthfully honest, I have no real reason to avoid the basic Cadian Scheme. I guess my inner hipster just won't let me do it. :/

If you are doing a desert world, why not tan? A basic khaki paint with a sepia wash looks great - and you can add little camo dots if you're feeling frisky. And of course, real IG wear white in the desert - cooler, who cares about camo?

Looks good, the priest's face is great. For the infantry, why not tan with red-brown armour, sort of a desert/badlands camp look? It would tie them in with the red priests nicely.

I really wish I could do white, but I'm atrocious at painting the color for some reason. Also, there is another individual on these forums (whose name escapes me sadly) who has a beautifully painted guard army in a white/terracotta color scheme that I've been following for a while, and I want to avoid subconsciously just cloning his troops haha.

The red-brown and tan scheme I think I'm going to use, and just modify the application areas. Thinking a washed out, almost grey green fatigues to represent the fact that they weren't initially from Voss, but have been there awhile. Then using that red-brown for all of the equipment and weapon casings.

Thanks for all the help guys, I'll try and get some test models finished up and posted!

Indeed, I had to go do some digging, many apologies for not giving credit where credit is due. I've been a huge fan of his battle reports and articles.

on another note, the pale green looks atrocious, I definetley should have heeded the words of others. I'll have an update on the color scheme tomorrow hopefully.

So after a very long stint away from my hobby table, I am back! Family obligations (also known as the "Tour of Relitaves soon for the Grave") has been filling most of my time latley, however, I came back from our little trip to find a parcel from our friends over seas at West Wind Metals! My Head Swaps have arrived!

Here we've got a basecoated figure with what I'm thinking will be the color scheme for my force:

And so more Troops for the force! I have a couple of regular infantry squads put together while I wait to get my Autocannons and other gubbins. The second picture is of my inprgoress blob squads. I'm hoping to build and paint this portion of the force up to a baby snuggy 1000 points so I can start playing some games, while planning out the rest of the full 2000 point force.

On another note, the Defense line! I'm planning on putting together a basic Aegis Defense line, but I also want to make a cooler more interesting one for casual games with people at the shop. My big question though, is would you guys as players, mind playing against opponents using alternative defense lines? I'm going to keep the construction of it as close to the dimensions of the model as possible, and when rules issues cropped up I would defer to the regular defense line, but I also want to make it a bit more interesting and themed to my force. What are you're thoughts?
