Necrons or Space marines?

Necrons have pretty decent weapons and support with the ability to regenerate and have shielded vehicles etc.

They hit hard and arent really a run and gun army.

Do you like the look of them though?

Don't listen to your friend. Pretty much every competitive player I know lists eldar, daemons and necrons as top tier. Tau are very shooty but don't have much of a "defense". They're the epitome of "the best defense is a hell of an offense". It sounds like space marines would probably be your best bet. They have so many options that they can be whatever you want them to be. They're tough and can put out a lot of firepower.

I would have to concur, Necrons might fit your play style.

As for being underpowered, IF (IF) that is true, its only a matter of time until a new 'dex is released that makes 'Crons THE SICKEST ARMY EVAR. Go for the army whose playstyle fits you, and whose fluff you can swallow.

"I went into a hobby-shop to play m'self a game,
The 'ouse Guru 'e up an' sez "The Guard is weak and lame!"
The Chaos gits around the shelves they laughed and snickered in my face,
I outs into the street again an' grabbed my figure-case."
Oh it's "Angels this" an' "Space-wolves that", and "Guardsmen, go away!";
But it's "Thank you for the ordnance" when the Guard begins to play,
O it's "LOOK AT ALL THE ORDNANCE!" when the Guard begins to play.."

Apparently some people are expecting the nerfbat, which I hope isn't true. Necrons just need some points fixes, and some stuff to effectively combat MCs and we'll be fine.

OH, and make the C'tan good again, please.

The oldest book to still be considered Top Tier. By no means underpowered, just getting slightly outdated.

Please, please do not go out and buy an army that other people tell you to buy.

Go here, now: http://www.lexicanum.com/

and learn about the different races. Then, go here: http://www.games-workshop.com/en-US/Home?_requestid=3066032

and here: http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/#&panel1-1

and look at all the purty models. Then decide which army you like the best and start off with a small $100 starter set or something.

Why the sad face? Newbies starting don't necessarily know every detail that only fedora-wearing neckbeards know.

But I think OP should explain a bit more what he means, but I think spehss mureens, CSM and Necrons seem like a good bet.
