Hey guys

I am very new to Warhammer 40k and I decided to go Tau, mainly because I liked the simplicity of the models and how they play

I bought everything I needed to create the paint scheme I wanted, the Tau Codex, 7th edition rule book and 1 box of Fire Warriors and a Piranha to give me something to get started with!

I want to try and play some in a month or 2 but I really need some direction. I just want to buy and paint what I need so I can churn through the models and get them fit for play, so I guessed 500 was a good starting goal

If anyone has some advice on a list I should follow I would truly appreciate it, if this is the wrong area to post this then I am sorry and I can put it somewhere else

Thanks for any hints or tips you guys can give me!

Is the Tau Battleforce box set worth purchasing? Or is there units in there I won't use for a 500 point army?

Yeah it is really exciting!!

I downloaded a program called Battlescribe on my phone for Android, I was looking over some choices

I've decided to get

2 sets of Fire Warriors
3 Crisis Battlesuits (Since I saw you can run them as a team or singular)
1 Battlesuit Commander
1 Ethereal
1 Piranha

This should tide me over for the next couple of months for painting and preparing and I should be ready to play!

Any other suggestions if you think I have holes to fill for a 500 point army please let me know! Fully appreciated!

What would you consider a good HQ choice for a 500 point army to get started with?

Should I stick with a crisis commander for now?

I love using a piranha or two in 500 points, they're such a fun unit to use.

Personally, I would bring a cadre fireblade instead of a battlesuit commander in 500 points. That saves you around 100-150 points depending on your loadout (i run a 197 pt support commander in a 1500 pt list). Take a squad of battlesuits with TL plasma rifles and missile pods, awesome unit that can do pretty much everything except kill AV14, but you won't see that at 500 pts. Here would be my ideal 500 pt list:

1x Cadre Fireblade

1x XV8 Team w/ TL PR and MP

2x 10 man FW squad

1x Piranha

1x 4 man pathfinder squad

Or drop the TL PR, make it regular, and add more warriors and one more pathfinder.

Wow, both ideas sound good!

I will definately buy a crisis battlesuit team since it will benefit me in the long run at least and I can set them all up together

Not got any pathfinders yet, guess I should get a box of them too since they aren't too overly expensive

I guess choosing the HQ is going to be the main point I need to decide on

Crisis suits are necessary for sure. The XV8 commander is key in an army, I just personally believe its not worth taking when you can have an ethereal or fireblade. Anything higher than 750 and the XV8 commander is your best option.

You're spending almost half your points after upgrades on your HQ choice at 500 pts with the XV8, I personally don't like doing that.

How would you set up your Cadre Fireblade in a 500 point army so he isn't hogging too many points?

I even like the sound of a 2nd Piranha!

I'm going to put an order in on Monday to get everything I need so I got at least 24 hours to make a final decision at least!

Would a Devilfish be worth while for any of the infantry?

I just take a fireblade as stock. I have one squad sit back with him usually in a building, getting 2-3 shots each. He already has one markerlight and he has split fire so that is great. If you are lacking in markerlight support, give him a marker drone or two.

The cool thing about piranhas are the fact that you can take five in a unit, they can be deadly together but are pretty much dead if you take only one. Take burst cannons on them unless you need anti-tank.

I love devilfish personally. I actually am painting one right now I would put one squad in the back with a fireblade, and either roll with 10-12 in the 'fish who take an objective and sit on it, or roll 6 of them up to a tank with EMP grenades if you need more anti-tank. Mobility is key for tau! Don't just sit back, you'll get stuck in combat where we fail miserably. Taking a devilfish as a transport instead of the pathfinders and piranha would be an option, just play around with different lists and see how you like it. What armies do you plan on playing against?

I have 3 guys I plan to play against

I know 2 of them have at least 3000 points and the other is building a 500 point army same as me and we are going to build them and play against each other once we are done

1 of them has 3k points Imperials
1 of them has 3k points Eldar
and my other friend is currently making a Blood Angels army worth around 500 point mark

What upgrades work best on the Devilfish?

So far I have tried to build my army like this on battlescribe

Cadre Fireblade
11 FW
10 FW /w Devilfish transport
XV8 Crisis Team - 3 of them with 1x TL PR and 1x MP

That makes exactly 500 points, and the devilfish has no upgrades added to it

Take a disruption pod and maybe sensor spines. The SMS is also worth it if you can find the points, especially against eldar.

The only army out of those that i have experience with is Eldar. Ignoring cover with markerlights is deadly to them, since most of their vehicles can jink and they have a shield cover save if they don't choose to jink. When you get to larger games, putting the Multi-spectrum sensor suite on a xv8 commander will destroy them, allowing any unit to ignore cover.

That list looks good, i might suggest trying to get rid of the twin linked, taking regular ones, and taking a disruption pod. That gives you a 3+ cover save with jink on the fish.

Cool, thanks for the tips, i'll do that with the crisis battlesuits and beef up the Devilfish a bit more then!

I'll work towards getting some pathfinders and building up a nice unit of 4-5 Piranhas too so I have some variability, its really exciting! Already wondering if I need to get some more paints with all these army ideas haha!

Hello there. I too am a newcomer to the Greater Good. In the recent weeks i played a couple 500pt games against a Space Marine force. I took a draw in the first game and the second i won with flying colors 7pts to 2pts. I was receiving advice from a friend and what was working REALLY well against his marines and a dreadnaught was

1 Fire Warrior Unit: With a Devilfish
10x fire warriors Shas'la
1x fire warrior shas'ui
1x ethereal (as HQ)

1 Crisis suit team:
2x xv8 shas'ui
1x xv8 shas'vre
all 3 with twin linked plasma rifles and a fusion blaster
(i used this unit to deepstrike behind his dreadnaught and with the melta on fusion blasters and the rerolls on misses for plasma rifles, they did some hefty damage)

1 unit of kroot
10x kroot basis infantry
(used as decoy.. this was the only unit he killed of mine but he got 2pts for first blood)

couldnt afford much upgrades with the devilfish but ill be doing 750pt games next time and i have a xv88 broadside on reserve for the next battle.

and actually my paint scheme i am going to incorporate is the Sa'cea sept. i have a commander farsight too and not sure if i should paint him normal in the red or to match my other tau. hmm.. choices..

But to the OP, we are on the same boat my friend. one thing i would recommend is to not just begin buying models you heard was good but use ones that would benefit your play style and in accordance to you playing larger and larger point games. I made the mistake of buying a whole bunch of models a year ago and start painting random ones that now... a year later when i finally can begin playing.. i have models i made that i cant even use yet cause im still trying to learn the game and playing low point games.

side note.. can anybody help with magnetizing tau forces?? i just got a bunch of magnets. really tiny ones.

Thanks!

Well I bought some small magnets as well and not really 100% sure what is the best protocol for setting up the models with magnets

I like your setup there Cyleetron, I keep brushing over the codex and really like the Fireblade over the other HQ choices for a 500 point game

Its just really hard to give the devilfish upgrades without making the Crisis Suit team a bit weaker, which is a shame because it seems they are really good with the upgrades

Too much choice!!

Well I really want to invest in 5 piranhas but not sure how my "wallet" will appreciate that! Are the xv8's worth it without twin linked? Is it better to use the points from a fire warrior squad to upgrade the team?

I haven't really thought about getting any piranha yet. I just got my new crisis xv8 commander in I gotta put together ideally for my 1000+ pt army but I too need some advice for utilizing magnets. I have a drill I'm going to attempt to "wing" it lol I'll let you know how it goes.

This is the 750pt army I will be using. Note I am using the ethereal again cause its a little cheaper and he has invoke of the elements ability and I can give him homing beacon so that I can deep strike with my crisis team and not have to scatter.

FYI, don't post Battlescribe list. It takes to much work to clean them up as you need to strip out all the rules and upgrade points.

As for HQ's I run an Ethereal in every list except my my low points Shadowsun bombs. If you are using lots of FW's they are better than a fire blade do to the abilty buff shooting ofunits on the move, get them moving faster while shooting, and get a FNP or Stubborn when you need it. You do have to watch it about giving up an extra VP, but other than that not much down side.

Magnetizing the suits, I suggest drilling at the front of each arm slot to inset a magnet and then clipping the enough tab off the front of the weapons to position the magnet there. you can also magentize the nose weapon of the Piranha. PM me if you want some pics on that trick.

I want to run at least 2 fire warrior groups and I keep getting mixed response whether to use the ethereal or the fireblade! Choices are hard!

Well I bought an Ethereal so I guess I will run with that now for 500 points

So far I have
Ethereal
Firewarriors x10
Firewarriors x10 + Devilfish (Disruptionpod, SMS, Sensor Spines)
XV8 squad of 3 (TL Plasma rifles / Missile Pods)

Have I misspent points anywhere or does this seem like a legitimate list?

now depending on what type of units you will be facing, if you are facing any heavily armored infantry like Space Marines or any vehicles or armored units i would suggest running fusion blasters instead of missile pods as they wont do much damage. and fusion blasters have melta which you roll 2 times when at half range.
That being said, this is what I would do.

with homing beacon on the ethereal you could keep the crisis team on reserve and run around with the devilfish, and when you deepstrike within 6" of the ethereal then you dont scatter. and trust me, that is a GREAT thing. my only concern with this setup is that you might not have enough units laying on fire at the beginning. you could always deploy the suits right away and take off the homing beacon, or have liek 2 units of 6-8 fire warriors or lose the pathfinders because you can afford to at a low point game and run 2 units of FW like 8-10 units each and as long as the ethereal is within 12" of a FW unit then they gain the bonuses.

or play with points and you could give 1 or 2 crisis suits a flamer and charge in with your devilfish with an ethereal and FW and deepstrike and deep fry enemies with the flamer template. as long as you had other units.. maybe a 2nd FW unit laying down some cover fire to the devilfish until the crisis suits land. the trick to this is how to effectively strike with your crisis team. when utilized it can be a deadly turn.

this is just coming from what i am learning in my starting months of playing.

Really informative write up mate!

I don't have any pathfinders yet but everything else I have and can setup

Are missile pods just not good overall? Fusion blasters worth keeping against all races?

Crisis team looks fun to play with on deepstrike, I like the ethereal play to stop the scatter roll but 6" isn't alot so I guess you really have to tunnel onto a position

Cheers for the help bud, any more advice would be duly appreciated

No problem!
Now I havent gotten the chance yet to try out any smart missile systems mostly due to the advice i was given to NOT take them against Space Marines. esp when my opponent was using a dreadnaught, if the opponent isnt protecting the flank of his armored unit and you make a successful deep-strike to the back side armor 3+ fusion blasters with melta can have a good chance of neutralizing a threat.
Add drones to strategically absorb wounds.
if you get a commander farsight then you can add up to 7 or 8 body guard suits and anybody using deep strike with farsight do not scatter. so that is one hell of a scary combo. but farsight costs a lot of points, i use my farsight model as a reg xv8 and i just got my xv8 commander in the mail and for a 750-1000 pt army i was told how to make him EFFING BEEFY and really piss off your opponent.

I have only played 2 games so far but I have been getting advice from the WH40k group Deathhammer 40k. they are found online and facebook and instagram.

But what total units do you have as of now? let me see what i might run with what you are limited to. And who is your primary opponent?
