Space Wolves were an army I have wanted to assemble for the longest time, I just never got around to it. I eventually assembled a few models and came up with a painting scheme, but was not content with how "plain" they looked. After reading Prospero Burns I really enjoyed the darker animalistic feel the Vlka Fenryka had. Feeling inspired, I wanted to make a more brutal interpretation of "Space Vikings" with a dash of wolf. I took apart what I assembled and threw these guys together, and have many more to finish. Thoughts and opinions on the matter are appreciated greatly.

Thanks.

Here is my first attempt of converted marines. Little mix of Grey Hunters, Blood Claws, and Wolf Guard.

Krom Dragongaze proxy:

This is my Ragnar proxy:

Next is a Silent Sister:

(I really like this model, and I wish I could say that I made it on my own imagination. I do not know the original creator that I got the influence from to make her, but they had a amazing Silent Sister army.)

Rune Priest:

( I am not really liking this model...)

Wolf Priest:

TERMINATORS!

(Really like this guy quite a bit)

One of two Bodyguards for my Great Wolf leader:

And now my Great Wolf Leader. - I been toying with a few names for him, not sure yet.

Its been a bit, but I got some time to post more. I also forgot that I started a blog a few weeks back about my first attempt with my wolves, sorry about that.....

Anyways, here is a unique Land Raider I am working on adding to my army list.

(There is a unique character I am working on that will ride the Land Raider into battle)

Please leave some feedback, and let me know what you folk think. I have some painted models of what the army will look like I will be posting later on. Thanks!

I have to ask, what sword is this it looks badass http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2014/7/26/632909_sm-Space%20Wolves%2C%20Vlka%20Fenryka.jpg

Also love the female character, do you know what parts you used there also ?

Thanks comrade! I used a Hive Tyrant sword arm and spliced it with a BA Sanguinary guard glaive encarmine. As for the Silent Sister, it is a mix of Dark Eldar Wych legs, head and torso, with some kind of archer arm , and a elf arm with sword from basic warhammer. I cannot remember specifics unfortunately...

Finally have 2 Grey Hunters, one of which will be a Wolf Guard battle leader painted so as to see what the rest of the army will be looking like. Thoughts are welcome.

Why do you say the vlka fenryka are supposed to be like yours?

And btw, i like the most of them but some have just ridiculously big weapons. And i personnaly dont like space marines with bare arms but that is just my personal preference.

It's totally a matter of opinion amigo. Obviously I get no say in how they "officially" look. (Title changed) I personally think the models and look that GW puts out for the space wolves look utterly dumb and silly. From what I have read about in fluff, they are much more savage, brutal looking and dark, not all fancy and bright. That is most unfortunate that you do not like bare armed space marines. Again, in the fluff, the wolves are known to go into battle without pieces of their armor on, so I figured I would represent that in my variation of them. As for the larger weapons, why not? We are talking borderline giants walking around in armor capable of bestowing ridiculous strength to its wearer. It makes total sense to me haha

I agree that IMO the space wolves also should be a little more brutal and darker then the space wolves of GW. Especially the colour of their armour should be a bit more darker IMO.

In what fluff you read that the dont wear pieces of their armour?
Never read anything like that, except sometimes helmets.

I also agree they should be able to carry those weapons, but IMO they just look to big for them to be able to fight good with them.

But that is all just a matter of taste, and for the bigger part of your SW: I like them

I could not tell you where exactly now that I think of it. Though I thought I read that somewhere about the not wearing of certain pieces, mainly just the arm bits. So I am probably wrong, but I know I have seen several pictures depicting such. Plus it fits the image I am going for. Which one are you most dissuaded by? Thanks for the feedback!

Well I love the two bodyguards, especially the first one. What kind of shield does he have? Furthermore some of these wolf guards in power armour also look bad-ass, the one with the twin claws is my favorite i think. Hich head does he have?

Your wolf lord has a nice base, (that minotaurs chapter master body right?) but i think his weapons are too large to be fighting with as he has both the huge sword and a spear? If he only had the sword he would be able to use it two handed. But i guess that would look less nice on the ministure as he then would have one free hand.. I guess it could work(two weapons), its terminator armour

P.s. Did i see a scibor warbear in the background? If so.. Pictures please!!! (I really like them)

Thanks comrade! The shield is off the Arjac model, I wanted the body for a Wolf Lord and had the arms left over so I used them for one of the body guards.

As for the head of the twin clawed chap, I carefully removed the head off a Space Wolf with Standard model (that was a tedious process...).

You are correct with your Minotaurs body assumption. I really liked it and bought it when it came out, but never used it. I totally agree with you. Wielding both the spear and the sword would be a bit ridiculous and not effective in battle at all. However I am actually working on custom rules for him. I have constructed a normal 25mm base with a spear sticking it out of it. It is meant to show that is where the spear has landed after my leader has thrown it (the closer the enemy target the stronger the hit, the further it is the weaker, etc). Basically he has different stats for using different weapons, but cannot use them both at the same time, otherwise he is penalized and not as strong. Still in the works on that.

Hopefully I can get some more pictures posted so you can see what I am talking about.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Here is my custom Wolf Lord on a mount. At first when I thought to make him I was all excited, then when I got it all together I was a bit skeptical, only because it looks best with a terminator torso on. However now I am really leaning towards using him as a Monstrous Creature since the model is so big haha.

oh I like the bear, do you have any thunderwolves? for size comparison with one of those?

I would use it as a wolf lord on thunderwolf mount with either runic armour or the armour of russ.

also the wolf guard teminator with spear and shield look nice, very viking like.

are you also going to write background and stories for them?

Apologies, I work weekends and finally have a moment. I will get some pictures of a couple custom cavalry I have done with the Bear Lord. I like the Armour of Russ idea hehe. Thanks for the kind words! I have some story I am playing with. Just not anything written yet, though I do have names for most my troops so far haha.

So after a year of life running wild battling roommate's, saving my minis from house fires, and retreating to a safer trelleborg, I now have been able to work on assembling more troops for The Rout. I have yet to get any of them painted but I have been working on putting together squads and HQ's. I hope you folk like them, and I would very much like some feedback on this style and how one may make them a bit more neat or "different".

Left side are Blood Claws, right are Grey Hunters.

(I am trying to mix a heresy age and current 40k. Idk how well it is, but I'm digging them so far.)

New squad of Terminators I'm working on.

(Is the head ok on the one termi??)

Some random unique characters.

(Custom Lukas, Wolf Priest, and 2 Wolf Guards. Do you guys like the mix of Apothecary and wolf priest?)

Lukas the Trickster

(I really like this model. I decided to keep the Cape to make it easier to recognize.)

Rune Priest, Floki Helwintr.

(Here's the old rune priest I hated but now throughly enjoy. I even named him hehe.)

Grey Hunters ready to be painted.

(These guys will be my first full squad of Rout Marines. Cannot wait to field them properly!)

Wolf Guard Battle Leader

(This guy is one of my more favored works yet. I plan on using him for pack leader and a Wolf lord. No name yet...)

Vlka Fenryka Terminators ready to be painted.

Rout Wolf Lord, Beric Thunderfist.

(One of my favorite termies. Named after Beric from the Space Wolf omnibus.)

Great Wolf Lord. "One Eye".

(This may be my favorite termi yet.)

So there are some of the stuff I have had time to tinker with. More will be uploaded later on when I've finished. I really do hope you all enjoy them through construction process. Will have some painted squads in the next couple weeks, should no nonsense come to pass! Hopefully... Again, I would really appreciate some feedback on these and maybe tips on paint schemes or bit usage. Thanks for your time. For Russ! For the Wolftime!!

So I ended up having more fun assembling new Wolves then painting any in my free time... I was able to come across a non GW spray paint base at a local hobby store though, so I picked it up to try. Not sure if it will work, so I just based a couple vehicle's first. So here is what I have done:

The Drednought has the new spray base. I am not sure it will fit in with my Rout since I was really looking to keep them dark. Do you folk think I can get it to work if I keep it solely on my vehicles??

Here is the new squad of my Rout's terminators. Just have to add more "flare". Thoughts?

(I'm 50/50 on really liking the look. I was thinking "fluff" wise to have these guys be the less experienced Wolf Guard. Idk.)

Regular Rout Terminators

(May just scrap these 2. Not fully sold on the looks.)

My Wolf Claw Terminators.

(I was trying some different styles for claws and I'm not sure which fits/looks best. Any opinions?)

New regular Rout Terminator

(This guy was inspired from the new Caged Wolf ebook short.)

Iron Priest in the works.

(This guy has been modified and changed so much in the past year. Glad to say he's almost done.)

New Rout Terminator/Lord.

(This gent was inspired by the Wolf Lord picture in the old codex. He needs more before I can start using him as a lord. For now he is just a basic terminator.)

So here is my new Great Wolf Logan proxy. I just was not a fan of the old model and bought bits a long while back to make my own. As with everything, I never got a chance to assemble him. So here he is now...

Logan Grimnar. The Great Wolf.

(I feel like the head does not do him any justice. Otherwise I'm digging this chap.)

There you have it. I just can't get myself motivated enough to paint so I end up assembling for hours instead. Since I found the new base spray I am really debating on painting everyone that color for times sake, but I really like my darker scheme. Maybe a couple washes may help darken the color a bit? Do you fine Dakka friends have any tips or opinions to add? I am really looking for some outside feedback. Until my next free moment...

Looking forward to seeing more painted.

Thank you amigo! Hopefully painted wolves will be coming very soon! Feedback is what I'm really looking for. The goal is to make these guys different, but I have noticed a lot of other armies which are similar in bit usage. Just have to "outshine" them somehow ha.

Several months have gone by and I still have yet to paint a single wolf. I don't know why I can't bring myself to do so... I did paint up some Alpha Legion Horus Heresy models for 30k, so at least I painted something. Otherwise I did get some more models made up to add to my army. This summer is my goal for getting them all done.

Anyways.....

First is my Alpha Legion attempt you can all make fun of!

Here is the new Lone Wolf model.

Bezerker Dreadnought (Grendel)

New Rune Priest model. (Refitted my old Krom proxy to this)

My proxy Njal model

My Predator for Tank Shock

(Should be first model to have painted for the Wolves
)

Is the predator too chaosy?

Well that's all I have done so far on my Rout so far. I need to stay motivated on painting them up! What are others preferences of painting moods and or how they stay motivated painting their whole armies?

Thanks for the kind words towards my Alpha marine.

The predator I tried to keep up with adding space wolves bits graciously but it turned out looking like a Nascar attempting to really sell the Space wolves theme. I tried cutting back and got this. Hopefully painted it looks better.

The Njal model is one of the favorites for models I've done so far.

I need to keep up momentum on this...

So I finally painted something! Here is my first Rune Priest, or úlfheðnar as I am debating on naming them for my Rout.

Currently trying out different ideas for a Force Sword look for my Rout. Not sure if this should be the keeper, any other idea out there? Maybe red runes?

What do you think about no gold trim, staying silver or metal?

Looking forward to painting some Blood Claws tomorrow night, hopefully more to post!

Thoughts on this first step would be really appreciated. Thanks a bunch.

I am not the best at keeping on track...

After a bit of stagnation, I have started working on my Imperium of Man collection a bit more. I took a break from my Rout, after a series of loses, and instead began focusing on the Guard. Still got some Wolves assembled though.

Here are some of my Imperium work so far.

Xenos and Hereticus Inquisitors:

(Left, Xenos. Right, Hereticus.)

Daemon Hunter Inquisitor:

Next are the beginnings into my Valhallan 597th. Featuring Commissar Cain and characters from his series. Eventually.

This is my first attempt at painting anything guard and going with a white scheme. It is definitely not as bad as I had previously anticipated. Straight black is turning out to be more of a task then white.

First Valhallan:

What does anyone think of the first one??

Commissar Cain:

(Very pleased with this model)

Last week began work on a full squad, plus a couple, and Commissar Cain. So far the white shading is going smoothly. Now I just need to figure out how to transfer it over to vehicles.

Squad beginnings:

Here, I was a bit worried on the skin. Looks as if they all have regular access to spray tanning haha... I thought I went horribly wrong in choosing my base skin tone. Anyone have any tips on skin application?

Skin looks better. Not sure if I am going down the right path:

I am looking to transition the white scheme to my vehicles, as you can see my Stormlord in the background painted all white. Initially figured that would be simple and look fine. Howevet after seeing it based, I now feel it needs more. An all solid white, giant, tank looks boring. Will be attempting base metallic and applying white camo for future vehicles. Currently working on several.

This is one of my next projects. Will be basing this one off the film Fury. Have the barrel of main cannon magnetized between Baneblade and Hellhammer. I want to try and get the crew included somehow. Would placing models standing about on the top of it be too much or distracting? The basic sitting models just don't seem to cut it for the theme of this tank.

Well this is all I have for now. I am looking forward to seeing these completed. Please feel free to offer tips, or other ideas. I am really looking to get feedback. Thanks for your time.

Scheme for the guard is looking good. The white looks decent, obviously white is hard to highlight but your use of greys give it depth, using other colours that contrast may help to to pop more as well, even just painting the rim of the base black would help with this.

Re the skin..I think you should start with a darker brown and work up in thin layers to a more 'healthy' skin tone. Washes are great for adding depth too.

Thanks Drcheese! I will definitely start painting the bases rims black. I didn't like the white base to begin with. Today I'll hopefully have the skin down alright enough. Only 3 layers of 2 colors have been applied for the skin thus far. What kind of brown, dark flesh? I applied ratskin and dwarf flesh so far. Cadian fleshtone is the next layer. Is that a good list of colors? Main goal is to keep theme from resembling Trump's unique hue haha.

Nice stuff you have here! For skin, a very easy but nice recipe is Kislev Flesh > Reikland Fleshshade > Kislev Flesh > Pallid Wytch Flesh.

Thanks mate. I am looking forward to getting them all finished. I'll also have to pick up some of those flesh tones over the weekend.

I was able to get a little more done today. I kind of screwed up and may have added chin straps where there are none. Otherwise I am not disappointed yet.

Not sure how to approach the old Yarrick model in the background. I will not be fielding him as Yarrick nor a commissar, but as a basic Hq. Would a blue or orange glow on the claw work better?

Made in gb

Where exactly would be glow be coming from? I'm not especially familiar with the details of the Yarrick model.

Based on your colour colour scheme my gut says blue.

EDC

I planned on making it count as a power fist, typically they glow from energy I am thinking, so around the entire claw? I was thinking the blue would definitely match and look great, however I imagined a orange or red glow would be a neat off look.

Yeah I am not very familiar with Yarrick's typical look either. I just wanted this guy to be a second unique looking Hq for my Valhallans. Possibly to represent Major Ruput Broklaw from the book series.

Planned on coming up with models for most memorable characters in the series. Eventually getting back to my Wolves sometime down the road...

Today I had very little time to work on much, so focused instead on my makeshift Hq Broclaw and Lt. I didn't know what color to utilize for more of a depiction of leadership leadership, belts trim, sash, etc. I figured a dark royal blue would be decent, orange or red I thought would stand out too much.

At first I was not liking the idea of a red plasma pistol, thought it looked too much like a toy, but I really liked the result.

What do you chaps think? Thoughts on the leadership colors would be appreciative.

Getting ready to prime all my vehicles to begin on my first attempt at camouflage over the next week.

Decided to catch up on reading some Heresy and Beast Arises instead of paint or assemble lately. Currently just finished "Vulkan Lives" and about halfway through "War Without End". Both pretty good so far. Huge fan of Vulkans entrance fighting a planet of Orks in the Arises series! The short stories of the traveling band of humans through the desolate ship, Assassin one, and White Scars/Thousand son stories were extremely entertaining to read. ( I am now going to make a formation of White Scars. Yay...). What are anyone else's thoughts on the books so far?

Anyways I did manage to get a little modeling/conversion work in on my Rout for once, picked up a bunch of stuff for them actually. Been working on a squad to take down a Knight or Stompa, in a quick and fun method. My buddy likes super heavies, so these guys are meant to drop pod in close, fire off all melta shots, then survive or die slowly...

Below you will see my squad of Wolf Guard made, fluff wise, with influence from a movie I just saw, can't recall the name, about a bunch of wild pigs going to war with humans in a suicidal manner. The film was great, but the boars and their leader was the best part. So far they are just my "Suicide Pigs".

This is the Leader: Snaebjorn Galtin Varnan
a.k.a. Snaebjorn "The War Boar".

Last I threw some extra bits together to see how I liked it. I wanted to start making Skyclaws but figured he would make for a better Rune Priest with jump pack. Wolves don't have wings though right? Story wise, I was thinking he could be an old crazy rune priest who went too far on a "trip" and now thinks he's a bird due to him being assigned to Skyclaws. I know he's a Space Marine and they can't go too bat gak crazy, but nonetheless this one is insane. Was thinking of making him a reaper like themed crazy bird priest no less haha.

Thoughts so far?
