One of my best friends has been playing 40k for two years, and he invited me to join him. I would like some help picking my first army. My friend plays Space Marines and Necrons, so those are out of the question. Which other armies do you think are beginner friendly?

Still haven't bought any miniatures.

Why are space marines out of the question? Just because he plays them doesn't mean you can't. Unless of course you already just don't care for those armies, then that's fine.

And ironically enough, both Space Marines and Necrons are both typically easier to start up with....

I figured it would be boring to play the same two armies against each other.

Space Marines fight space marines all of the time.

Play what you want to play.

I'll turn your question around on you: What army looks fun to paint and assemble? Have you read any of the books or stories?

Here we go again...

Go to these three websites:
http://www.lexicanum.com/
http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/#&panel1-1
http://www.games-workshop.com/en-US/Home?_requestid=3384070

And don't come back until you've picked an army that you like best for its models and lore. Even then, don't come back. Buy the starter kit for that army. Build those models, paint them, and play with them for a bit.

THEN come back and ask for advice on how to go from there.

I'm sorry if I'm coming off rude but you will truly be the happiest if you go about it your own way. If you ask people on the internet they will mostly tell you to play which ever faction is the most powerful right now and you will probably spend several hundred dollars and be sorely unhappy with what other people give you.

I've read some Black Library novels about SM.

You're not being rude, that's a fair point.

If you are even slightly interested in an army, just get the codex and rule books for now. Read them. Make up some lists, and play some games using your buddies necrons and Marines to see if you like either and/or to get a feel for the game.

Best of luck. Pick something that YOU would enjoy painting, modeling, and playing, or you'll burn out and quit.

I haven't bought any codices yet, but I played a few games with my friend. I really enjoyed them.

Space marines actually have a large variety, even in their own book. You could play a completely different chapter than him, and use different units.

As suggested by chanerofways, I'll get back to you in about 15 minutes after I've read some on lexicanum.

So, after reading some on Lexicanum, Tyranids really interest me. I like the background, and the models look amazing. The only drawback I can find is that they are a horde army. Would that significantly raise the cost of starting them?

A friend once put it to me this way.. Everyone wants to dump every dollar buying the entire 2000+ point army they want. Why not save, say, $50? $100? Each month, and buy a few units here and there. Your friend should be fine with playing lower point games from the get go, until you acquire a force to have big upscale battles. It also gives you a chance to learn the rules, and your army

So maybe to start out I would buy the codex and the battleforce?

Perfect! That is all you need! Now you two can play what? 500 pt games? You can learn the rules, and see where you'd like your army to grow from there!

Would of advice. Synapse. Tyranids could be a tad trickey for a new player. So just remember. Synapse.

Also Tyranids can be horde or elite. Warriors are now troops, not elites, and provide synapse, making them vital units for Tyranids.

The only "horde" units for Tyranids are genestealers, termagaunts, and hormagaunts. I guess gargoyles are as well. The rest of the bugs are monstrous creatures, so typically you will only have a few of each.

That said I do notice that the bugs are a tad bit more expensive than other models. So my advice would be to, after buying the Battle Force and codex, look out on eBay/kijiji for models. It can be quite a bit cheaper, I build a 4k Taut army for less than 350 bucks by carefully bidding on eBay.

Tyranids are definitely one of the most expensive armies to play.

Nidzilla seems to be the cheaper and more competitive route.
