Dark Eldar HQs, what would be a good buy for a beginner

Friend of mine has one battleforce box, i'm picking him up another battleforce and looking to add an hq with it. I was looking between the haemonculus or archon (or is there another better one)?

I either see the cheapest haemonculus buried somewhere or someone like Vect. I have never played Dark Eldar, though.

Ya same, i've got white scars, space wolves, nids, and necrons ... never really messed around with the DE codex, i'll prolly pick up a haemonculus so he has a cheap hq ... i figure if hes going an archon he could convert something.

Get an Archon, a Haemoculi is more just a pain-token to grant your soldiers. Sure he can do a small amount of damage with his gear but he lacks the survivability. Get an Archon with a shadowfield and venom-blade. This will give him a 2++ and the ability to wound anything on a 2+. If you want him to have more ranged options, then give him a blaster.

If you're looking for a named hero however, you can't go wrong with Duke Siliscous or the Baron. Both do not currently have ingame models, so you'll have to cobble together your own.

Really depends on your playstyle. If you just want to pay the HQ-tax then use a haemi. They can also serve as nice special tool box. For example the crucible against psykers. If you want a powerful beatstick, take an Archon with huskblade, poison blade and Shadow Field. If you ve got the points take a soultrap to get double S. But be careful with your Archon. He gets expensive really fast and is an easy instant kill for everything with S6 or higher.

Yeah my mate always goes the Duke.

Though I did take them on myself once and went Vect. Not sure if there is a figure for him though. But his barge was pretty sweet until it was one shotted turn 2 :(

Grotesques are pretty sweet though if he doesn't have any of them.

I'd probably go with a Haemonculus.

It's nothing amazing, but it's cheap, gives a decent buff to a squad and can have a pretty nasty flamer.

Archons lack a good delivery unit - especially in the battleforce where your only real option is a fragile, tarpit unit. Also, he suffers from being a CC unit in an edition that hates combat. And, whilst you can put him elsewhere, he doesn't really add anything else to a squad - other than his combat ability (save perhaps for an extra blaster shot).

Technically, the Archon is more survivable (which *might* be useful for a Warlord) - but in truth they'll both evaporate in the open. So, their real protection comes from their unit and transport; with their equipment/FNP being more of a failsafe.

I've been using Duke Sliscus in a venom with true born with splinter cannons for lots of 3+ poison fun. Gives you a decently cheap hq that is relatively durable and spends most of the game in your back field.

Unfortunately, all of our hqs are squishy. So you just have to do what you can and rely on the rest of your army.
