A starter set for the faction you intend to play.

Captain Killhammer McFighterson stared down at the surface of Earth from his high vantage point on the bridge of Starship Facemelter. Something ominous was looming on the surface. He could see a great shadow looming just underneath the waters of the Gulf of Mexico, slowly spreading northward. "That can't be good..." he muttered to himself while rubbing the super manly stubble on his chin with one hand. "But... on the other hand..." he looked at his shiny new bionic murder-arm. "This could be the perfect chance for that promotion." A perfect roundhouse kick slammed the ship's throttle into full gear. Soon orange jets of superheated plasma were visible from the space-windshield as Facemelter reentered the atmosphere at breakneck speed.

Don't I also need the Force book for the faction and the core rules?

Force book is completely optional, but a good idea if you want to read up on the faction's background (and for the artwork). Any models you buy already come with a card with the necessary rules, and you can use War Room (PP's official app for Apple and Android devices) if you want to see all the rules for all your models - free download, and it costs $7 to see all the rules for all the models available in your faction, including Theme forces, a rules reference and it's updated with any new rules/models that get released until the end of the edition. There's also the Battle College fan site, which doesn't give exact rules, but will give you a good idea of what each model can do.

The basic battlebox starter sets can all be used with the quick start rules they come with to try out the game, but you will eventually need a copy of the Prime MkII book for the full rules (or Primal MkII for Hordes rules), as the quick start rules leaves a lot out.

The Two Player box sets do come with the full rules however, so it's a great bargain if you're interested in starting a faction that's in one of those boxes (so circle/legion or Menoth/Khador).

After you get a starter set (whether 2 player or a battlebox), I'd just play around with them for a few games to get the feel of the core rules, before expanding out to 15-25 point games for a while. If you know which factions you're interested in, we can also give you a good idea on how to expand your forces from those starter sets

I'm interested in Cryx. The thing that confuses me is that the only models available to buy on the website seem to be the battlegroups. Am I missing something on the website?

Ah, unlike GW and Corvis Belli, Privateer Press only sells starter sets (and occasionally larger "Summer starter packs") directly, because it likes to direct it's sales through it's Independant retailers. So in the Gallery section of Warmachine, it will list all the available models for your faction (including info and RRP), but you'll need to go to a retailer to buy the models - either an online one like Miniatures Market (which is currently having a 40% off sale on Warmachine stuff if you hurry) or a FLGS.

While they come with starter rules I highly recommend the rulebook as well.

Also, if you are planning on buying online there are a lot of retailers. But don't neglect Amazon. I've seen things for over 60% off msrp with free shipping.

Try here for models right now, a lot is out of stock due to the 40% off sale going on, but it's a great store.

You can get the rulebook(Prime MkII or Primal MkII) for around 18-20 bucks online and a starter set for your chosen faction is around $30 at the link above. That's all you really need. After that, I'd suggest getting your factions Forces book and some paints at your local FLGS. Other stuff to play; 6d6, a rule, some paper(to make templates), clear tape(just put it over the damage counters on your unit cards and use dry erase markers), some kind of tokens(again, paper on the cheap, you can buy tokens later).

You should be able to get up and running for less than $50.
