Hey everyone.

I was thinking about naming the characters in my armies. Does anyone else name there characters? If so, what did you name them?

“Because we couldn’t be trusted. The Emperor needed a weapon that would never obey its own desires before those of the Imperium. He needed a weapon that would never bite the hand that feeds. The World Eaters were not that weapon. We’ve all drawn blades purely for the sake of shedding blood, and we’ve all felt the exultation of winning a war that never even needed to happen. We are not the tame, reliable pets that the Emperor wanted. The Wolves obey, when we would not. The Wolves can be trusted, when we never could. They have a discipline we lack, because their passions are not aflame with the Butcher’s Nails buzzing in the back of their skulls.
The Wolves will always come to heel when called. In that regard, it is a mystery why they name themselves wolves. They are tame, collared by the Emperor, obeying his every whim. But a wolf doesn’t behave that way. Only a dog does.
That is why we are the Eaters of Worlds, and the War Hounds no longer."

I have a Lord of Change called Asina the Afflicted. I found his name on a chaos daemon generator and it stuck.

I've named my two Soul Grinders; Barry Scott and Uncle Susan respectively.

I'll end up with somewhat more serious names for Sisters of Battle characters.

I name a lot of characters. In my Guard, I have
Commissar-general Wolfe, Tank Commander Baron Hendrich, and platoon commander Lucas Lorcan

My inquisitors are Van Baalen (radical ordo Xenos), Skjor (very radical Ordo Malleus) and Marcus Ultor (Puritan Ordo Hereticus).

My Space Wolves have names inspired by Norse mythology, Skyrim, Thor comics. The Wolf Lord is Erik Aekenskeld, the role Priest is Odin Stormseer, the Thunderwolves are The Wolves Of Sorvengarde and the Wolf Guard are Arjac, Baldur, Volstagg, Hogan and Fadril.

Most SM Chapters have their names from a single language.
For example, my BA Successor Chapter has most of it's characters named after some italian names.

And my DA Company Master Malachiar isninspired by an old hebrew name that means "my angel".

Sorcerers Nemarian (main leader) and Uhndor, Dark Apostle Severus, aspiring sorcerers Ardeas and Ptolm. I habe yet to name a chaos lord and the champions for my terminators, chosen, and cultists. Seeing as it's a mixed bag of origins for this pirate warband, I'm pretty free with choosing names and having them work.

Then with my scions I threw all caution to the wind the army itself is called the Irritable B*stards, with names like "Really Irritable B*stard" (lord commissar with power fist), "Head B*astard" (Tempestor prime), "Suicidal B*stards" (squad of maxed out plasma scions that started this whole amusing naming convention ), and so on and so forth.

In your Rear.

Yer I name all my special characters including Champions and Sgt's, currently I have the following on my WFB Chaos Army.

Chaos Lord Mounted - Empress Nightwhisper
Champion of Chaos - Consort Uthred the Bloodhammer.
Chaos Lord on Foot - Prince Consort Thadius the Blessed.
Slaaneshi Sorcerer - Lucius the Insane.
Slaanesh Marauder Champion of Excess - Concubine Ragnar the Flayer

I find it nice to make the commander of a unit a conversion and add the unit it's own character, it helps shape how I will paint that unit to match their Lords personality.

I have snipers, ghost, soap as a bit of a joke.

Though some other names are going to be on a crusader theme, cities, knights, lords, etc.

I have black templers if you guessed lol!

Sgt. Vanden - OOC Hey, that was your doing. I didn't choose to fly in the "Dongerprise'.

Gadreel, Harbinger of the Krakens (Not really a CM since we haven't had those since Ferrus "escaped" the Horus Heresy)
Azrael, Harbinger of Technomancy - Their Chief Librarian
Cain and Abel, are twin Psykers (based around the story about the two)
Ezekiel, Harbinger of Librarians is another Psyker, he trains a small number of the chapter's Psykers
Raphael, he's the top apprentice of Ezekiel
Sammael, Angel of Death is their best hand to hand fighter (barring Gadreel, of course)

Then lesser ranked, but no less important characters are;
Sergeant Achilles, sgt of Sternguard squad Achilles
Sergeant Charon, sgt of Terminator Assault Squad Charon
Sergeant Thanatos, sgt of Centurion Devastator Squad Thanatos.

The last three are where I ran out of creativity and just made the sergeant's name the name of their squad.
The HQs are all named after people, angels and gods from different cultures.

I and a friend have personal conventions that one man in every IG squad (be it normal, conscript, blob or veteran) will have one man about 2" in front of everyone else, called "Pvt. Larry".

His job is to take the first hit and die like a bitch. So you don't have to.

Meanwhile, I have a LRBT with a Battlecannon called "Big Bertha" (the cannon takes the name), and I am planning on getting a Baneblade, and calling the main gun "Little Bertha".

Loving that idea. I might have to steal it for my generic tactical marines. "Brother Larry".

As for the Baneblade idea, definitely do it.

On a serious note; how does he remember...?

I always name all my independent characters and unit leaders and create a background for them. It is absolutely necessary to have a themed army.
My SW are still in an early stage of development, so I have only named the Wolf Lord, Kjartan One-Eye, but future characters will recieve similar Norse names.
For my custom chapter, the Ash Wyrms, I have made a simple system to make fantasy names from real world names: I just take a name I like, cut away the last part of it and attach one of a number of suffixes instead. When possible, I also swap one or two letters for others with roughly the same sound, so that I get weird fantasy names like Kyrilas (from Kirill), Tarmin (from Taran), Jerimar (from Jurjen), Mattilas (from Matthis), Ilmin (from Ilya) and Alekimar (from Aleksej)
For my Dark Eldar, I still have to make up some weird names. I think I will go with the DE names from the Blood Bowl video game.
I also name large important vehicles, usually in Latin (High Gothic), like my Baneblade Ultor Perfidorum (Punisher of the faithless)

My IG tend to only have names for the officers.

-My Company Commander, The Iron Duchess Artisma Vorrad. Earned her name after taking down a CSM lord in CC with only one wound left. She now serves mainly as a straken stand in.

- Gregor "The Golem" Alexi. Master of Arms, and former commander of my first platoon, promoted to master of veterans, then to regimental standard bearer with the nerf to Harker. Earned his place protecting Artisma from a gaunt blob trying back up a Carnifex that bum rushed the CCS. She gets "stuck in" alot....

-Vladimir Goraeg, He was my chenkov stand in but has now become just a normal commander. Story behind him was using his conscripts to intercept assaulting dark eldar, them basilisk scattering and blowing DE out of combat, allowing for the platoon behind what was left of the conscripts to frfsrf what was left into oblivion (which was the turning point that won me that particular game)

I ALWAYS name my characters... unless my friends make up something good first

Chapter Master is Homeros Amaritudine (first name being a generic Hellenistic name, and the last name is taken from Latin, meaning "bitterness")
High Chaplain is Richardo

3rd Company Captain is Jareb Tempesta (made by a name generator, and it stuck to my mind)

I used to know a guy with a Light Infantry guard army who all had names painted on their bases. They were themed by squad. For example, one of his squads was something like;

Sergeant Mayhew
Skywalker
Solo
Fisher
Tarkin
Prowse
Biggs
Lawson
McDiarmid
Daniels.

Me, I tend to name individuals, but not the whole army. My Chaos Cult has names for everyone who matters, and a few who don't;

Those who matter:
Magistra Aeronwy (Ahriman), and her familiar,
Ari (Daemon Prince)
Adept Eleanor (Sorceress) and her familiar, Keef
Adept Khelis (Warpsmith), and her familiar, Sora
Apprentice Ligaya (Aspiring Sorcerer) and her familiar, Paru,
Apprentice Kuu (Aspiring Sorcerer) and her familiar, Leyi
Apprentice Tia (Aspiring Sorcerer), and her familiar, Adui
Apprentice Szara (Aspiring Sorcerer), and her familiar, Koru

Mabinogi the Destroyer (Obliterator)

Those who don't;
